The night between the 11th and the 12th of July will be remembered as the night when el Chapo

(the
Small, called that because of his physical stature) realized the escape of the century, as most of the
Mexican newspapers affirm.
Like in the movie The Shawshank Redemption, the prisoner escaped through an underground tunnel.
However, the protagonist of the notorious movie interpreted by Tim Robbins, could rely solely on his will of
freedom and a rock hammer.
Undisputed leader of the cartel of Sinaloa, Joaqun Guzmn is guilty of innumerable crimes, which include
the murder (in his own words pronounced, with some measure of pride, in front of the members of the
Court ) of more than three thousand people.
He is considered the most powerful and dangerous narcotic trafficker in the entire world, he was even
honored with the status of Public Enemy by the city of Chicago.
Following in his fathers footsteps, Joaqun Guzmn devoted his entire life to the crime. Indeed, starting
with a plantation of marijuana, he climbed the criminal social pyramid thanks to his business acumen,
together with violence and lack of scruples, earning the undisputed title of Lord of drugs.
During his long bloody career, started when he was just 15, El Chapo was arrested two times.
The first time the Mexican Intelligence followed his tracks until Guatemala, before stopping him right few
kilometers far from the border. Extradited by the Mexican Authorities after a long hunt, he was locked into
the Mexican prison of Guadalajara until the 2001, year in which he realized is first genial escape.
The official story tells he was lead out by some prison guards while he was hiding inside a laundry basket;
however other sources affirm that El Chapo broke out of prison disguised as a SWAT agent, thanks to the
complicity with the same director of the prison, who provided him a complete uniform.
Meanwhile it is chronicle that, after a period of abscond lasted 13 years, the drug trafficker was arrested in
his luxurious apartment of Mazatln and detained in the prison of maximum security of Altiplano, ostensibly
to complete his sentence of 20 years.
Nevertheless, less than 1 year later he carried out his ambitious plan of escape.
This time his project was different respect to the first one, however, in both cases, probably the criminal
accomplished his plan thanks to the complicity of his fellows outside and of some prison guards.
The last video recorded by the security camera located in his cell shows the prisoner heading toward the
shower area and then subsequently disappear to the view
While he was detained in Guadalajara, he had the occasion to forge alliances with other prisoners and
increase the ranks of his advocates, without meeting any resistance on he part of the prison guards, powerless
against this bleak reality.
Meantime, his accomplices have been digging out a tunnel 1.500 metres long and provided with fresh air and
illumination.
In a basket located in his cell was also found a dead sparrow, forced to fly into the tunnel to check if the air
was breathable.

According to the investigators, El Chapo took no more than twelve seconds to reach the freedom, thanks also
to a motorcycle on railway, diligently parked there by his fellows.
Finally, the guards discovered a small hole in one of the walls of the shower which permitted the access into
a small tunnel which was connected, through a ladder, to the main one.
However, there are still several interrogative points in the story.
The main one is represented by the involvement not only of the prison guards, but also of the policemen.
One of the elements which suggests this hypothesis concerns the late in the discover of the escape. In fact,
every guest of the Altiplano prison is supposed to wear an electronic bracelet. However, the prison guards
noticed Guzmans evasion only 30 minutes later. So the reasons to explain this excessive late are two. His
bracelet was broken or the prison guards were keeping their ears and eyes closed.
We are talking about the same guards who apparently ignored the fact that a team of diggers has been
building, for a whole year, a tunnel beneath their feet. In fact, the realization of such a massive work must
have took a long time, over which the prisoner must have been regularly fiddling around the wall of his
shower.
On top of that, the exit of the tunnel is located in a house close enough to the prison to raise doubts about the
Mexican authorities implication.
What is certain is that, despite the several warning about the real possibility that El Chapo could be planning
a forthcoming escape provided by the American Intelligence, the Mexican Government (too much blind to
see the evidence) rejected the extradition request that the USA submitted only a couple of months ago.
Until now, the Mexican and the American Intelligence have been cooperating to track Guzmans steps. The
Mexican police played its part arresting 13 people suspected of involvement in this case. Two of them are
none other than agents of the Mexican Intelligence, the other are employees of the prison.
Moreover, the USA Government offered 5 millions of dollars to anyone who would give valuable
information for the capture of the fugitive.
The investigative reports published by Excelsior, Business Insider and El Economista (three
newspapers which focus on news concerning the economy world) brought to the worlds attention the
complicate mechanism, as well as the massive amount of money, set in motion to actuate El Chapos plan.
Amount of money which goes over two millions of pesos ( more than 120 millions of dollars), wisely
distributed among bribes and purchases of construction materials.
According to the sources, in the expenditure are even set out the land in which was constructed the house
containing the hidden end of the tunnel, as well as the bribe paid to a pilot in order to fly Guzman after his
jailbreak and the rent of the airfield used to stand before Guzmans transport toward his final destination:
Sinaloa.
In addition to his personal capital (approximately estimated at around $ 1 billion) and his several lackeys,
Joaquin Guzman could even rely on support of influent business men and expert strategists.
By now the Mexican investigators targeted two familiar faces in the criminal underworld: Manuel Trillo
Hernandez ( an entrepreneur who poss several restaurants and exchange houses) and one of Guzmanns
lawyers scar Manuel.

Hernandez is suspected of having financed the drug traffickers escape, whereas Gmez was arrested
charged of being the brain of the plan and

The history of this escape gives us the opportunity to analyze in greater detail the situation in a country
stricken by the phenomenon of the narcotic traffickers. What is glaring is that the Mexican society, as well as
the penitentiary system, is going through a period of decadence.
Money and power fascinate always more children who, to the typical question what do you want to be in
the future?, too often candidly answer the narcotic trafficker.
Moreover, taking a walk around the areas where these criminals use to meet, is increasingly common
bumping into young girls who crave the attention of these gentlemen.
In a society poisoned by a so powerful and grounded criminal group in the face of which the same
(in)competent authorities result defenseless, while the discernment clearly of the new generations between
good and evil is always more affected by this bad example.
In many respects ,the modus agendi of the narcotic traffickers appears similar to the Mafiaone.
Indeed, they secure themselves the respect and veneration of the inhabitants in their range providing
work and money. The result is that these criminals can blow hot and cold in always larger areas of the
Mexican territory.
In the rare cases when the Mexican police succeeds in capturing some big fishes among the packet ranks
of narcotic traffickers , they inexorably extend their influence even inside the prisons.
