Therearemanywaystodesignalessonplanforreadingandlisteningskills.Thestages
presentedhererepresentageneralprocedureanditshouldbeseenasanexampleonly.The
stagesareclearlydelimitedandaccordingtomyexperiencealessonplanbasedonthese
stagesworksverywellinanESL/EFLclassroom.
Stage1Introductionandprereading/listeningtask
Discussthetopicwiththewholeclassoringroups.Theteachercandothatbyaskingstudents
questions.Relatethequestionstothestudentspersonalexperience.Atthisfirststage,the
teachercanalsogenerateinterestinthetopicofthelessonandexcitecommentbyshowing
pictures,headlinesetc.
Stage2Vocabulary
Theteacherteachesanyvocabularyitemsthatareessentialforansweringcomprehension
questions.
Stage3Reading/listeningforgist
Theteachersetsthreeorfourquestionsthatcheckgeneralcomprehensionofthetext(gist)or
extractrelevantinformation.
Playtherecordingonce(studentsreadthetext).Studentsanswerthequestionswhile
reading/listening.
Somestudentsmaynotbeabletoanswerthequestionatthefirsttry.Replaytherelevantpartof
therecording(rereadtherelevantpartofthetext).Allstudentsmustunderstandtheanswers.

TrainOnlineWithaHighQualityMontessoriCertificationProgram.

Stage4Reading/listeningforspecificinformation
Setquestions(oratask)aimedatcheckingmoredetailedunderstandingofthetext.Replaythe
recordingtwiceifitisnecessary(givestudentstimetorereadthetext)andanswerthe
questions.Studentscomparetheiranswersinpairsbeforetheteachergivingthefeedbacktothe

Everylessonmustendwithaproductiveactivityrelatedtothetopic.Theproductiveactivitycan
beeitherspokenorwritten.Agoodactivityatthisfinalstagecanbe:discussion,roleplay,
writingaletter,etc.Theactivitydoneinpairsorgroupsismoreeffective.
