Brickwork site plan

Introduction
In the course of Civil Engineering, brickwork laboratory is the basic subject that all civil
engineering student need to take. This is to ensure the future civil engineer understand the
brickwork and make them more easily to understand or clear about their further study subject.
The purpose of this report is to understand the safety of brickwork laboratory for ensure the
safety of student when undergo brickwork. The second purpose of the report is to understand
the tools used in brickwork and the function of the tools in brickwork.
The description of the safety of laboratory and the function of tools are listed in the report.
Finally, the understanding of the safety laboratory and tools are important before we start our
brickworks.

Objective
To understand the safety of brickwork laboratory.
To classify the name and the uses of the tools.
To understand the function of the tools.

Safety of Laboratory
The safety of the laboratory is important to ensure the safety of the student when undergo
brickworks. The safety of the laboratory is the responsibility of student to understand and
follow. Therefore, this report is done to ensure the student understand the safety rules in
brickwork lab.
Laboratory Rules
1.
Training and authorization is required for the use all equipment.
2.
Permission is required to work alone, in isolation or after hours.
3.
Always keep work areas clean and tidy.
4.
Place tools and equipment in proper place after use.
5.
Ensure all tripping and slipping hazards are removed.
6.
Keep all pathways and means of exit free of obstruction.
7.
Assure chemicals are place in appropriate cabinet.
8.
Lab shirt must be wear before undergo brickwork.
9.
Safety boot have to wear to protect the legs.
10. All materials and tools must be label.
11. All waste materials must be stored in the designated area.
12. Working in this laboratory may require to move or lift heavy items. Be sure to follow
appropriate lifting techniques. Ask for assistance if needed.
13. A review of these safety rules is to be conducted annually.
14. Training in standard operating procedures is required for all equipment.

Tools Used for Brickwork

Brick Trowel

Diamond-shaped

Round-shaped

This tool has a slightly rounded, diamond-shaped blade. Brick trowels come in several
patterns.
Function:

Brick trowel is a hand trowel used in brickwork or stonework.

Used for leveling, spreading and shaping mortar or concrete.

Spirit Level

A spirit level, bubble level or simply a level is an instrument designed to indicate whether a
surface is horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb).
Function:

used to indicate how parallel (level) or perpendicular (plumb) a surface is relative to

the earth.
There are three types of degree measure. 0/360 degree, 90 degree and 45 degree.
6

Steel Square

A tool to measure the 90 degree of the brick wall.

Function:

to make sure the corners are at a 90 degree angle, assuming building a square or
rectangle wall.
used for marking off corners when laying out the job, and for checking corners as the
wall is being built.

Shovel

A shovel is a tool for digging, lifting, and moving bulk materials, such as soil, coal, gravel,
snow, sand, or ore.
Function:

Used to mixing concrete and moving sand, aggregate and concrete.

Wheelbarrows

A wheelbarrow is a small hand-propelled vehicle, usually with just one wheel, designed to be
pushed and guided by a single person using two handles at the rear.
Function:

Used to move concrete or sand or aggregate from place to places.

Steel Trowel

Steel trowels look similar to hand floats, except the blades are thinner and the handles are
open rather than closed.
Function:

Used after floating to produce a smooth, hard, dense slab surface.

Darby float

Function:

To level ridges, fill voids, and smooth the surface in preparation for troweling.
bring paste to the surface by pushing down the coarse aggregate.
to permit water to bleed out.

Jointers

Function:

used to finish a mortar joint after it becomes hard enough so that a finger print will
show in the mortar upon being pressed.

Hammer and Chisel

If there are more than just a few blocks or bricks that need to be split, and very clean cuts are
required, then a hammer and chisel should be used.
Function:

Used to cut brick.

Brusher

After a wall is built, there may be some mortar stains or powder residue on the wall.
Function:

Used to remove the mortar stains or powder for cleaning the finished wall.

Conclusion
Brickwork laboratory is important as the basic for our civil engineering course. The
understanding of the safety of laboratory is important to ensure the safety of students when
undergo brickwork. For example, wearing a safety boot to protect our leg from the falling
bricks.
After that, the classify of the uses and name of tools used in laboratory is important for us as
a civil engineer because the classification of tools is the basic knowledge we have to know.
We will not confuse the tools that need to use for brickwork with the others workshop.
Lastly, understanding the function of tools able for us to classify the different tools have the
different uses. Therefore, we are able to use the right tools to finish the brickworks with no
delay and problems.

References
References are important for us to finish our report with extra knowledge. Therefore, listing
out the references in the report is required as an appreciate for the reference.
