FORGIVENESS
Forgiveness is a very important part of every humans life.
Since we are imperfect, it is inevitable that we commit
wrongdoings and create a gap between our relationship
with God and others. Sin also creates a cycle of revenge
between one another and may lead to even more sin.
Jesus made sure to highlight loving ones enemies because
by forgiving them, we end the cycle of aggression
between each other and we can return back to love.
When we love our enemies and forgive them, we
embody the perfect love of God Himself and share it with
those around us.

We exemplify what it means to be sons of God as we

love all our brothers, His creation, and serve as an
inspiration for others to stop committing wrongful acts
and turn to love and God. One of the greatest acts of
forgiveness shown by Jesus is in Luke 23:34, Jesus said,
Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they
are doing. Even in the face of persecution, He has loved
and forgiven His enemies and asks God to forgive them
for their actions. An outstanding Christian is one who
lives by this example and loves and forgives his enemies
in order to spread the love of God to others.

EXEMPLARS

Pope John Paul II was shot four times in an assassination

attempt by Mehmet Ali Aca almost thirty-five years ago
in Vatican City. After being shot, one expects the victim
to be vindictive if not resentful. Pope John however, had
already forgiven Mehmet as early as the ambulance ride
on the way to the hospital. He later visited Mehmet in
prison and had a long talk where in the Pope expressed
His forgiveness. Even after being shot, Pope John was able
to love his enemy and attacker and found it in His heart
to forgive Him. He is a model Catholic as His example
serves as an inspiration to return to God and love. Pope
Johns great love has moved and changed countless of
people, with Mehmet Ali Aca as one of them who
converted to Christianity and even laid flowers on the late
Saint John Paul IIs grave as a sign of love and respect.

Sue Norton received a call from her brother one night on

September 1990 telling her that theyre father had been
shot to death in his Oklahoma farmhouse. Robert
Knighton, the killer, was apprehended and sentenced to
death. Sue, after being devastated by the death of her
father, prayed hard to God. After this reflection, she
realized that hating Robert would only lead to her
becoming a bad person so she met up with him in prison
and expressed her forgiveness. After befriending him, Sue
made an appeal to the court in order for Roberts
sentence be reduced from death to life in prison. Sues
act of kindness and forgiveness to a person whom
someone in her circumstance would hate is very
remarkable. Although Robert sentence was not changed,
he converted to Christianity before he died. This shows
how being kind is something everyone must do because
it only brings even more good.

HUMILITY

Humility is an important quality for a person to grow

because it helps us recognize the areas in our life where
we are lacking. When we have too much pride, we are
blinded to our mistakes and faults. It prevents us from
recognizing the things that make us imperfect and we will
never get over the hurdles that block us from becoming
a better person. Through humility, we accept the fact that
as imperfect being, we make mistakes. It is only through
this knowledge of our mistakes where we can make the
conscious effort to correct these mistakes and grow as a
person. By being a humble person, we gain a deeper
understanding of what is really needed in life to be happy
and successful.

Jesus Himself has shows great humility despite being a

person who should be worshipped. In John 13, 1-17, we
see how Jesus, the son of God, washes the feet of his
fellow disciples. He shows through this that He is not a
king, but a Servant King whom everyone follows.
Ultimately, a good Catholic must be humble in order to
become a better person as well as be able to help those
around him.

EXEMPLARS

Charles Feeney, together with Robert Miller equally own

the Duty-Free brand. Both are millionaires however the
way of life that they have are very different from each
other. Robert Miller lives an extravagant lifestyle with a
grand house and a private jet. Charles Feeney is a man
who is truly humble as he dedicated his whole life for the
welfare of others and the advancement of humanity. Once
someone who had a net worth of a little over 7.5 million
dollars, he has now given it all away to different charities
and organizations and insisted that they keep it
confidential as he did not want the attention. He is a
model Christian as his humility knows no bounds (he does
not own a car) and is exemplified by his very words: "I had
one idea that never changed in my mindthat you should
use your wealth to help people. I try to live a normal life,
the way I grew up,"

Bill Gates, one of the riches people in the world has given
26 billion dollars to different charities and research
centers around the world. Although there is almost no
extent to his wealth, he has realized that some things can
bring us happiness that money cant buy, such as helping
the less fortunate. When someone called him the worlds
most generous philanthropist, he replied saying that
although he has given a lot of money, he has not made any
extravagant sacrifices. He said that he has a plane and can
afford any food when he wants to and that the real
generous people are those who work at hospitals in
Africa or donate their vacation fund. He is a model
Christian as he has not let pride blind him into thinking
that he is the most generous and it is that humility that
allows him to recognize his different weaknesses.

guidance in his daily
life, but also Gods
grace to relieve others

PRAYER

As Christians, we must not forget that Prayer is the

principal way of communicating with God. Prayer is very
important for it is only in Him that we may be able to live
the full life. When we pray, we confide in Him our deepest
thoughts, and we pray to Him to give thanks, and ask for
guidance. By doing so, we would become closer and
closer with God, and He would seem more as a loving
Father. Therefore, a true Christian must pray regularly,
when in doubt, and when in need. Also, we should not
just be limited to pray for ourselves, rather, we should
pray for everyone. We can pray for people all around the
world, such as victims of calamities, war, or even anyone
who may be needing help now, which also helps the world
to become more united.

Jesus, despite being God Himself, continued prayed nearly

all the time to His Father, both for His guidance and
Grace to help others too. In the Agony in the Garden,
Jesus was undergoing tremendous suffering during this
time, as could be seen from the account of Luke 22:4344. It could be seen that He still prayed to the Lord, asking
for guidance, and also reaffirming His resolve to fulfill His
mission. God could be seen to be answering His prayers
by comforting Him with an angel. Ultimately, Jesus shows
us how important prayer is by always doing it Himself, no
matter what the situation is. To teach us how to pray, He
taught us one very important prayer, the Our Father.

EXEMPLARS

Nelson Mandela, the iconic former president of South

Africa, was known for his courageous actions against
racial discrimination. Because he rebelled against the
Apartheid in South Africa, a law that segregates black
people, he was imprisoned. I would like to point out that
he was imprisoned for a staggering amount of 27 years.
No ordinary men would be able to endure this, but
Nelson Mandela prevailed till the very end by the simple
act of praying to God every day. In fact, through his
communication with God, jail time lead him to discover
more things about himself. When Nelson Mandela walked
out of prison, his dignity, spirit of reconciliation, and
desire for national unity were ever greater than before.
His example clearly shows to us the power of prayer to
change oneself, and to persevere amidst all trials.

Serena Williams is the current No. 1 tennis player in the

world. She is known for her relentless will, powerful
strokes and lightning speed. In spite of her natural talent,
she also had another factor that empowers her, which is
faith. For Serena, prayer is supply of strength and
perseverance. When she was in a bad situation, she said
prayers not to win, but to be strong and to be healthy.
Her faith served her well through many more ups and
downs in her life, such as career-threatening injuries, and
surgeries, She has lost the No. 1 ranking many times, even
dropping to 175 at one point, which led to many sports
commentators forgetting her by 2012. But due to her
faith, she had persevered and started winning again. Now,
if she wins the U.S. Open, she will make history. This
shows how prayer is another foundation for one to
persevere through the difficulties of life.

Should treat everyone

as a friend to allow
everyone to
experience Gods
Kingdom.

FRIEND

Prayer is not the only thing that we should do to help

others. As Christians, our fundamental role is to bring
about the Kingdom of God in present times. As we
know, Gods Kingdom is not a place, rather, it is a state
of where we experience God as our king, and
therefore, His love. The most effective way to make
present Gods Kingdom would be to show friendliness
to everyone. A true friend as we know it shows
kindness and helps one in times of hardships. Jesus said
in John 15:12: "This is My commandment, that you love
one another, just as I have loved you. As such,
friendliness could be achieved by simple actions such
as helping each other with school lessons, or even
greeting each other warmly with each encounter. After
all, it is Gods plan for us to become closer together,
which could be achieved by befriending everyone.

In fact, Jesus Himself was a very good example of this

criterion. He treated everyone as His friend, by healing
the people through His miracles, and guiding them in
their faith in the interesting form of Parables. He even
became friends with the sinners and tax collectors,
such as Matthew. Jesus is the ultimate friend as He
sacrificed Himself on the cross for all His friends
(everyone). He Himself said that in John 15:13, that:
"Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down
his life for his friends.
