Speech Outline
General Goal: I want my audience understand what my speech is all about.
Specific Goal: I want my audience know the true background story about Titanic.
Introduction:
1. Introduction to R.M.S. Titanic.
a. The name of Titanic was derived from Greek mythology and meant gigantic. It is one of the
largest vessels of the British shipping company, White Star Lines fleet. The R.M.S. Titanic
was over 250 meters long and stood 25 stories high.
b. It was built in Belfast, Ireland and United Kingdom.
c. It is claimed to be the largest ship with a high technology and the Titanic was deemed to be
an unsinkable ship.
d. On 4th April 1912, after few days of its first voyage to United States, a tragedy happened
where the Titanic sideswiped a massive iceberg and sank in less than three hours.
e. The total of passengers including crew aboard the Titanic were 2200 and only 700 passengers
were survived.
f. On 1997, James Cameron fictionalized on the tragedy of Titanic and produced an epic
romantic disaster film where it is all about a couple from two different social classes who fall
in love aboard the ship during its ill-fated maiden voyage. Basically, the film focused only on
the story of two couples and fail to tell the real story on the actual tragedy.
g. Today, I am going to share some facts that you cant get from the movie regarding Titanic.
Thesis Statement:
The facts that I would like to share with all of you today is about the lifeboats on the Titanic,
low quality of rivets used on constructing the Titanic and no binoculars were used on its
voyage.

Body
Main Point 1: Lifeboats provided on the Titanic.

Topic Sentence: First of all, I would like to talk about the facts on lifeboats provided on the
titanic.
I.1 Not enough lifeboats provided.
I.1.1 The Titanic capable of carrying 64 lifeboats where it can accommodate over 3500 passengers.
However, the chief designer of the Titanic planned that the Titanic will carrying 48 lifeboats
and unfortunately only 20 lifeboats were carried by the Titanic just to make the ship look less
cluttered.
I.2 The failure on launching the lifeboats.
I.2.1
There are 20 lifeboats provided, only 18 life boats were successfully launched and 2 more
were failed and simply floated away.

I.3 The lifeboats were not used to the fullest.

I.3.1 Those available lifeboats capable to accommodate over 1178 victims but none of them were
filled to the maximum capacity and only 700 victims were manage to aboard while there are
still 472 spaces were unused.
Closing Statement: Therefore, the failure on the lifeboats aspect result a huge number of
victims that couldnt be safe.
Main Point 2: The usage of low grade rivets on the construction of the Titanic.
Topic Sentence: Secondly, I would like to explain to all of you about the usage of low grade
rivets instead a high quality rivets on manufacturing the Titanic.
2.1 The construction of the Titanic needs 3 million rivets to build the vessel.
2.1.1 The Titanic manufacturer, Harland & Wolff, was under pressure to secure
enough iron to produce 3mm rivets to stitch the ships metal plates. In the
rush to beat competition from Cunard Line, the White Star Liner was
supplied with a vessel that was constructed using substandard materials
which is low grade of rivets.
2.2 The strength of the rivets used.
2.2.1 Low grade rivets are much more brittle compare to the high grade rivets
which should be used in manufacturing the Titanic.
2.2.2 Due to low grade of rivets, the head of the rivets popped out easily after the
ship sideswipe the huge iceberg.

2.3 The Unsinkable Ship title.

2.3.1 The manufacturer of the Titanic claimed that the Titanic is an unsinkable
ship as it will stay afloat if up to four of its sealed compartments were

flooded. However, there are too many rivets popped along the body of the
ship and resulting the fifth compartment flooded and causing the ship to
sink.
Closing Statement: Thus, the unethical behaviour of Harland & Wolff by providing the low
grade of rivets had resulting a huge disaster and the death of thousands
of innocent life.
Main Point 3: No binoculars for lookout crew.
Topic Sentence: Lastly, it is found that there is no binoculars were used by the lookout crew
and causing the crew failed to spot the iceberg.
3.1 The replacement of Second Officer, David Blair.
3.1.1 The person in charge for the binoculars, Second Officer, David Blair were
replaced by Henry Wilde because of his experience as Chief Officer aboard
RMS Olympic.
3.2 The locker where all the binoculars are kept.
3.2.1 Second Officer, David Blair is the one who kept the key to the locker where
all binoculars were placed. Upon his replacement by Henry Wilde, he
accidently took the key home along with him.
3.3 The lookout crew unable to spot the iceberg earlier.
3.3.1 Due to no binocular for the lookout crew, every lookout crew in charge at
that unfortunate night were unable to spot the iceberg and failed to give an
earlier warning to the captain who steer the ship.
Closing Statement: Generally, the failure of spotting the iceberg has causing the ship fail to
change the route and finally sideswipe the iceberg.

Conclusion:
1. As for conclusion, there are more reasons on why the tragedy could happen.
2. Based on the story of Titanic, we should not taking any task for granted.

3.

There are a quote by Jack B Thayer state that The partly filled lifeboat standing by about
100 yards away never came back. Why on earth they never came back is a mystery. How
could any human heed those cries?
