Background
Evaporationisanendothermicprocessthatresultsinatemperature
decrease.Evaporatingmoleculescarryawaythermalenergywhenthey
leavealiquid.Theamountoftemperaturedecreaseisrelatedtothestrength
ofintermolecularforcesofattraction.
Alkanesandalcoholsaretwotypesoforganiccompounds.Alkaneshave
carbonandhydrogenatoms.Thetwoalkanesusedinthisactivityarepentane,C5H12,and
hexane,C6H14.Inadditiontocarbonandhydrogenatoms,alcoholsalsocontaintheOH
functionalgroup.Twoofthealcoholsusedinthisactivityaremethanol,CH3OH,andethanol,
C2H5OH.
