Solar energy provided a heats source for some

of the earliest dwellings. Today, it has the
potential to heat our homes, run appliances,
cook meals, and even to power our cars.
Students learn about the power available from
the sun and harness it, using a 250 watt light
to simulate sunlight. The activity guide takes
them though experiments on how heat moves,
how to collect it, and how to store it for
nights and cloudy days. House design allows
students to compare different combinations of
passive and active solar heating. They then go
on to use a photovoltaic (solar) cell to generate
electricity that can be used to light the model
house and power a fan.
Model house measures about 7 x 7 x 8
tall. The illustrated guide takes students through
a series of activities that include a brief history
of the use of solar energy, conduction,
convection, radiation, thermal mass, insulation,
heat, temperature and basic electricity. A great
way to introduce your students to the oldest
and newestenergy technologies. Foam board

Advanced Energy House Class Project

Provide your students with even more experiences with solar energy. The advanced energy house
includes all of the experiments of the basic model, plus activities with wind and solar electric vehicles.
The duplex design allows them to compare two different passive and active heating systems sideby-side for quick and easy analysis. The activity guide takes them though experiments on how heat
moves, how to collect it, and how to store it for nights and cloudy days. They then go on to use
photovoltaics (solar cells) to generate electricity that can be used to light the model house, power
a fan, and charge a battery to run an electric vehicle. The wind turbine allows them to generate even
more power. The design challenge encourages students to apply what they have learned to design
and build the most energy-efficient house possible.
Model duplex measures approximately 7x14x8 tall. The illustrated guide takes students through
a series of activities that include a brief history of the use of solar energy, conduction, convection,
radiation, thermal mass, insulation, heat, temperature, wind energy, and basic electricity. Foam board

The Eco Power Stirling engine is a great way to

have more fun building a Stirling engine while
spending less money. And it comes with a DVD
instructional video so your engine will go together
faster. The most fun thing about this engine will
be when your students watch it work and try to
figure out how you got an engine to run on
water! Don't tell them its really the heat, not
the water, that makes it run! Includes parts and
complete video instructions on DVD.

through a window. The possibilities are endless!
While this engine operates based on well
understood physics, it may be the closest thing
to a magic and a perpetual motion machine that you
can buy! Measures 9.7 x 6.5. diameter.

PHYSICS

SCIENCE

Hands On Physics, from the Concord Consortium, is developing a new

kind of science course that responds to the new standards by providing a rich,
inquiry-based approach to physics. The course features a sequence of hands-on
investigations that involve building sophisticated experiments out of inexpensive
apparatus. This course should be a refreshing alternative to any standard physics
course at the high school or college level. The Hands On Physics goal is to develop
and disseminate physics material for technical programs at the high school and
college
level
that
is
adapted
to
the
needs of students preparing for advanced technical careers. Go to
http://hop.concord.org/ for complete instructions and course material for the
Hands On Physics Labs.
The materials have the following objectives:
The development of reasoning skills in a physics context.
Easy and flexible implementation.
Sufficient material for double physics/technology courses
at both pre-college and college levels.
Articulation between high school, college and technical programs.
Proven appeal to under-represented students and
practicality in disadvantaged settings.

THE CONCORD CONSORTIUM

Introductory Mechanics: Aircart

The study of motion is motivated in part by the human desire
to move things from one place to another. Designing any
transportation system requires an
understanding of some basic ideas of
physics. In this unit you will build an aircart,
decide what attributes of the cart are pertinent,
and what variables are important for the
description of motion.
You will decide how the variables are related.
Determining a set of variables and the relationships
between them is the primary work of creating a model. A good mathematical
model can be generalized and extended. With a good model in hand, design
work can proceed. What transportation problems could an aircart solve? What
are its drawbacks?
This kit includes the parts needed to build a propeller-driven cart, and a
force/thrust gauge. Suitable for students in Grades 9 through College.
840996 Introductory Mechanics: Aircart Kit ................................................$23.95

Introduction to Sound Waves:

Sound Extension Projects
These extensions involve measurements of sound
intensity. For these sound investigations you will
need to build a Sound Level Meter. You will
also need a sound source. The tone generator
you build in the Core project will serve quite
well if you add a speaker. All parts need for
extensions are included.
841334 Introduction to Sound Waves: Sound Extension Projects Kit ................$29.95

Introductory Optics: Haze

The amount of haze in the atmosphere is
increasing for reasons that are not fully
understood. In this unit, you build optical
sensors that can be used to infer haze levels
and contribute your data to an international
haze monitoring network.
This work involves understanding the physics of light with an emphasis on
wavelengths, absorption, scattering, and photon energy. The unit introduces an
amplifier and the concept of amplification. Investigate LEDs as lights. Measure
the forward voltage for red, yellow, green, and blue LEDs. Look at the spectrum
and polarization of the sun, LEDs, flames, other sources, and of scattered light
using different kinds of scattering.
This kit includes all the parts needed to build a Sun
Photometer. Grades 9 through College.

Introductory Electronics:
Security Systems
This is an introduction to circuits and
electronics set in the context of creating a
building security system. The simplest system
consists of switches, a power supply, and a
buzzer. A variety of switches will be
introduced, including magnetic, optical and
thermal ones. Youll gain familiarity with
interpreting schematics, using breadboards,
using meters, and debugging circuits. You
will also build a power supply used later.
Physics concepts include electrical terms, power, an introduction to solid state
and experimental skills. This kit includes the parts needed to build a Low-Voltage
Power Supply to use in this and other H.O.P. Units. Grades 9 through$College.
