OBJETIVE
The main objective of current calculation is can verify a typical mast pole that
will be used as support for lightning rod.
2. SCOPE
This calculation report has verified the specification of pole as the vendor has
been indicated and the design of foundation for this pole.
3. DATOS Y ENTREGABLES
3.1. Documentos de Ingreso.
Norma ASCE 7-05
3.2. Documentos de Salida.
Memoria de Clculo.
Sketch de fabricacin.
4. DESING AND CALCULATION REPORT
The following calculation report shows the complete calculations for a design of
a
15 meters pole that will support a lightning rod on top.
We've considered the pole composed by pipes of multiples diameters the
following figure shows the arrangement of the pipes.
Figure 1 Pole model and cross sections (diameter and thickness in inches)
APPLIED LOADS
We've considered in the calculations the following loads:
DEAD LOADS
We've considered as dead loads the self-weight of pole, the weight of lightning
rod and
accessories, and the load due to the installation of lightning rod then we've
considered as
dead load 50 Kg (110 lb) additional to the self-weight of pipe sections.
WIND LOADS
SEISMIC LOADS
We've proceeded as is indicated in the International Building Code (IBC 2003)
[ASCE 702] using the following parameters:
Structure Type: Steel Pole (Telecommunication Tower factors due is the
closer
type structure).
Spectral Acceleration (0.2 sec.) Ss = 1.60g
Spectral Acceleration (1.0 sec.) S1 = 0.48g
Site Class: C
Response Modification R = 1.5
ANALYSIS RESULTS
Next we will show the effects over the pole for every load state.
Figure 4 Axial Loads due to Dead Loads (Max = 374 Kg [825 lb])
Figure 5 Shear loads and Bending Moments due to wind loads.
V = 105 Kg [232 lb]; M = 731 Kg-m [5 291 lb-ft]
Figure 6 Shear loads and Bending Moments due to earthquake loads.
V = 266 Kg [588 lb]; M = 2 343 Kg-m [16 978 lb-ft]
As we can see the effects due to earthquake loads are bigger than the effects
due to wind
loads; the design codes indicate that for design we have consider only one of
both effects
therefore weve used the earthquake loads to design the pole elements.
LOADS COMBINATIONS
As we've indicated we will use the ASD methodology to design the pole
elements. The
load combinations to use are the following:
Combination 1 = 1.0 Dead Loads
P = 374 Kg (825 lb)
Combination 2 = 1.0 Dead Loads 0.75 Wind Loads
P = 374 Kg (825 lb)
V = 79 Kg (174 lb)
M = 548 Kg-m (3 968 lb-ft)
Combination 3 = 0.6 Dead Loads 1.0 Wind Loads
P = 224 Kg (499 lb)
V = 105 Kg (232 lb)
M = 731 Kg-m (5 291 lb-ft)
Combination 4 = 1.0 Dead Loads 0.525 Earthquake Loads
P = 374 Kg (825 lb)
V = 140 Kg (309 lb)
M = 1 230 Kg-m (8 913 lb-ft)
Combination 5 = 1.0 Dead Loads 0.7 Earthquake Loads
P = 374 Kg (825 lb)
V = 187 Kg (412 lb)
M = 1418 Kg (10 212 lb-ft)
Combination 6 = 0.6 Dead Loads 0.7 Earthquake Loads
P = 224 Kg (495 lb)
V = 187 Kg (412 lb)
M = 1 640 Kg (11 885 lb-ft)
ANALYSIS RESULTS BY DESIGN LOADS

Lateral displacement (due to wind load) = 697 mm, then relative drift 697/15000 = 0.046 < 0.05

Due to that pole's foundation will have to resist all the seismic effects and to
facilitate the
foundation construction we've proposed to use a 900 mm square base; also to
avoid
piping interferences we've decreased the embedment till 1500 mm.
Figure 11 Poles Base Reactions
To design the concrete base pile weve used the next loads combinations
(strength
combinations):
Combination 1 = 1.4 Dead Loads
Combination 2 = 1.05 Dead Loads 1.4025 Earthquake Loads
Combination 3 = 0.9 Dead Loads 1.43 Earthquake Loads
The envelope strength diagrams are shown next.

Pmax. = 3 406 Kg, Vmax. = 1 451 Kg, Mmax. = 582 Kg-m, max. = 0.17 cm
The pile verification have to be done as a concrete column, using interaction
diagrams that
we show next.
