The Day Jesus Crossed the Line, Part 3 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 36)

TEXT: John 4:7-14

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to
drink.
8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest
drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the
Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that
saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have
given thee living water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep:
from whence then hast thou that living water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof
himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst
again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the
water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting
life.
---------Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series,
which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and
reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main
thing -- and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and
praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents
and politicians but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused
to obey God's Great Commission and who have refused to obey God's repeated
commands to "pray without ceasing" for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders.
Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the

candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don't get caught up in it
like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get
their hearts right with the Lord.
This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says,
"For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him
crucified." Acts 5:42 which says, "And daily in the temple, and in every house, they
ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ." And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, "No man
that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who
hath chosen him to be a soldier."
This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those
saints who still loves to hear the "Old, old story of Jesus and His love" -- As the hymn
says, "For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest."
This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and
be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 36.
Warren Wiersbe said, "How true it is that the things of this world never completely
satisfy. In hell today, people are crying, 'I thirst!'"
Due to the fact that Jesus is a Jew and male, He has captivated the interest of this
Samaritan woman, who has probably never been approached in a respectful way by
any Jewish person in her life. She has some idea that Jesus is not an ordinary man
because of His words, "If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee,
Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living
water."
One would think that following Jesus' statement, this woman would have had three
questions: (1) What is the gift of God? (2) Who exactly am I talking to? (3) How can I
(and should I) take the "living water" that this Man is offering?
However, her focus remains on what is physical -- the water in the well and the fact that
Jesus doesn't have any. She says, "Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is
deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?" The Samaritan woman's mind is
set on how she can continue getting what she has always gotten -- a bucket of water
from the well to quench her thirst for that day, a bucket that she will have to refill again
and again. Although her interest is piqued by Jesus' offer of "living water", she still
thinks He is referring to material water. In that day, the term "living water" was used to
refer to water from a spring or river; it was water that moved or flowed as opposed to
water that remained still as water in a well did.

The Samaritan woman says, "Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep:
from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob,
which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?"
Now, the woman has an inkling of who Jesus is. She compares him to Jacob, one of the
patriarchs, who dug the well where they are sitting. If Jesus can offer her something that
even Jacob could not provide, surely Jesus must be a great man.
Jesus responds, saying, "Whosoever drinketh of this water [the water in the well] shall
thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst;
but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into
everlasting life."
Whatever the world gives will eventually run out. It is a basic law of nature that any
material thing, and anything produced by material means, will eventually decay or run
out. Money, possessions, success, education, even human relationships cannot satisfy
a deep spiritual need.
The only thing that can satisfy such a deep spiritual need is the living water that Jesus
Christ offers. The living water is the life of God being present in a person. Because God
is eternal and eternally good, this life never dies. It is like a flame that never goes out.
Jesus describes it as a "well of water springing up into everlasting life." When you look
at a spring, you will see water constantly bubbling up from the earth. That is what God's
life is like inside of us. It is a gift that keeps on giving.
The Samaritan woman had to look past her immediate physical need for water, and look
to her eternal spiritual need of salvation. Today, we must do the same. The devil wants
to keep us fixated on the here and now, and what we can do to live comfortably and
entertain ourselves. To use the words of the ancient poet, Juvenal, as he described the
sad state of the Roman population, all we want is "bread and circuses", and that is what
the devil supplies. He does not want us to think about the eternal tomorrow.
Jesus offers us what nothing on this earth can give us -- eternal life, permanent
satisfaction, and a relationship with God. He offers "living water". Will you accept this
gift?
If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour, John 3:16 states, "For God so loved
the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should
not perish, but have everlasting life."
The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth
the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead,

thou shalt be saved.... For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be
saved."
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose
from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me
this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done
some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For
Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that
Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Him as my Savior and
follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and
save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose
again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that
is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you
