Equilibrium

Background
Allchemicalreactionsarereversible,thatis,theendproductsofareactioncanalwaysbe
transformedbackintotheirrespectivestartingmaterials.Onecanconsideraforwardreaction

ChemicalEquilibrium
Chemicalequilibriumdescribesastateinachemicalreactioninwhichtherateofthe
forwardreactionisequaltothatofareversereaction.Atthispoint,theconcentrationsofthe
startingmaterialsandendproductsareheldconstant.Thisisespeciallyimportantinindustrial
applications,astheratioofproductsandreactantscanvarydependingondifferentconditions.
Beingabletounderstandandmanipulatetheequilibriumpointofareactionisessentialtothe
processofchemicalsynthesis.

Asareactionproceeds,therelativequantitiesofproductsandreactantswillbeginto
approachaparticularratio.Thisisduetothefactthatasmoreproductisformed,thereverse
reactionbecomesmoresignificant.Astheconcentrationofreactantsdecreasesandthe
concentrationofproductsincreases,therespectiveratesofreactionapproacheachother.
Eventually,therateoftheforwardreactionisequaltothatofthereversereaction,and
equilibriumisreached.

Itisimportanttonotethatwhiletheconcentrationsofreactantsandproductsisheldconstant,
bothchemicalreactionsarestilltakingplace.Becausetheratesofbothreactionsareequal,there
isnonetchangeincomposition.
