BRAZILIAN DANCE FESTIVAL PUTS BRUM CENTRE STAGE - 23-25 April

Birmingham is to host its first international Capoeira festival from 23-25 April at the
Friends Institute in Moseley.

With stars such as Amy Winehouse and Birmingham’s own Kerrang! Radio DJ Kate
Lawler practising this spectacular Brazilian art-form, where dance meets martial arts, the
popularity of Capoeira in the second city is growing and is demonstrated by the calibre of
this event.

Featuring artists and masters from around the world, including the renowned Mestre
Jogo de Dentro, from Brazil, there will be a variety of specialist workshops, including
Afro-Brazilian dance during the three day event.

A free performance and grading ceremony will take place Saturday, 24 April 2-5pm
when members of Cordão de Ouro Birmingham (CDOB) demonstrate their skills of
trickery, music and acrobatics.

Comments Samuel Mascote from CDOB and festival organiser: “Timed to coincide with
the International Dance Festival Birmingham, our event is a first for the city and gives
momentum to placing Birmingham on the map as a world stage for dance.

“With around 200 guests expected and commuters confirmed from as far afield as Israel
and Poland, as well as other major cities in the UK, our festival demonstrates the
enthusiasm for Brazilian culture and dance, and is personally a major achievement
following our group’s formation just over a year ago.”

The festival spirit continues into the evening on Saturday 24 April with a Brazilian
themed after-party at The Cross from 8pm. As well as workshops and demonstrations
from international guests, there will also be Capoeira displays, live percussion and
Brazilian dance music.
