MUSIC AND ART THERAPY


General Objectives:
The activity mainly aims to enhance the psychological and emotional well-being of psychiatric
patients. This is designed to establish a channel in expression of feelings through the use of artistic
abilities particularly drawing.
Specific Objectives:
After one and a half hour of nursing intervention, the clients will be able to:
1. express thoughts and feelings through their output;
2. sustain relationship with co-art therapy participants; and
3. maintain acceptable and positive behavior throughout the therapy
Music Therapy
Indication:
Music Therapy is most frequently used to help the mentally or physically disabled. For example, if a
client is suffering from speech difficulties or autism, they may be enabled to express themselves more
effectively by making musical sounds and it can help people with physical disabilities to develop their
motor control better.
Use of music, as addition to relaxation therapy or in psychotherapy, to elicit expressions of
suppressed emotions by prompting patients to dance, shout, laugh, or cry in response.

Art Therapy
Indication:
Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and
enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the
belief that the creative process, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress,
increase self-awareness and achieve insight. (http:// www. arttherapy. org/ about art.com.htm.)

Physical Arrangement:
The therapy will be done at the activity area outside the male and female rooms wherein clients will
be given ample space to do their work.

Rules to Follow During the Therapy:


Therapist
1. The therapist shall greet and introduce self to clients as well as inform plans for todays
activity.
2. Therapist will explain the purposes or objectives of the therapy.
3. A concise and clear flow of the entire therapy process will be discussed to the participants.
4. The participants are expected to listen carefully and follow the instructions given.
5. Art materials are to be provided accordingly.
6. The therapists or observers shall assist the participants all throughout the therapy.
7. The participants are to be constantly reminded of the maximum time allotted.
8. After the maximum given time, participants are highly appreciated on their output.
9. Peace and order should be maintained all throughout the therapy as much ad possible.

Therapy Process:
1. Gather all clients to the activity area for music and art therapy.
2. Instruct client to sit down while waiting for the therapist to start.
3. Greet clients one by one and orient to time and place.
4. Brief introduction is given regarding the activity-music and art therapy.
5. Explain objectives of the activity.
6. Discuss the set of rules to be followed.
7. Explain the activity proper and what are to be expected from them.
8. Instruct clients to listen to the music and make the drawing regarding their thoughts
about FRIENDSHIP by using the materials given.
9. Provide the necessary coloring materials.
10. Inform the client of a maximum time allotted for them to finish which is 30 minutes only.
11. Constantly remind client of the remaining time.
12. Praise the client for their work without necessarily destructing them.
13. Explain to share their thoughts behind their output and encourage verbalization of
feelings.
14. Further give feedbacks to their work.
15. Thank clients for their active participation.
16. Safely accompany clients to their ward.
