How to Book Train Travel From Sofia to Kiev
By eHow Travel Editor

Rate: (4 Ratings)
To travel by train from Sofia to Kiev takes stamina because the ride is typically over 60 hours long and Bulgarian trains have a reputation for running slow. Still, the
scenery is some of the most beautiful you'll find and there are few things more romantic than traveling by train, especially between the eastern European cities of Sofia
and Kiev

Book Tickets from Sofia to Kiev

Step1
Choose a connection point between Sofia and Kiev. There is no direct train between the two cities.
Step2
Book your ticket out of Sofia through Rail Europe's Web site (see Resources below) or call 1-888-382-RAIL. Prices will be moderate.
Step3
Use a travel agent to purchase your ticket from your connection city to Kiev. Ukranian train tickets are only sold at the station, railroad offices and some travel
agencies.

Choose a Seating Assignment and Type of Train Ticket

Step1
Decide which class of ticket you'd like to buy. Sitting on a train for almost 3 days can be tedious. On most trains with a first, second or third class ticket, you will also be
assigned a bed. Many trains also offer extra space and privacy based on how much you're willing to spend. If you're trying to save money and can sleep without a bed,
seat-only options offer a cost-effective way to travel from Sofia to Kiev.
Step2
Decide whether you'll be returning to Sofia or continuing on to another city before you book your tickets. If you know when you'll be returning to Sofia, a return ticket will
be the most cost-effective way to travel. If you don't know when you'll be leaving, choose a one-way ticket. If you know when you'll be leaving Kiev and continuing onto
another city, consider a multi-leg journey.

Determine How Long Your Trip Will Be

Step1
Plan out how long you are going to be gone, including the time it takes to get to/from Sofia and Kiev (approximately 3 days), as well as how much sightseeing time you
want for each city, if any.

Step2
Research the sights in both Sofia and Kiev. This will help you plan out how many days you need in each place to see everything you want.
Tips & Warnings
 There is no direct booking entity for Ukrainian train tickets.
 Look online for special deals. Some Web sites offer specials offers when you book with them in packages

How to Book Train Travel From Sofia to Varna

By eHow Travel Editor

Rate: (5 Ratings)
Bulgaria is a southeastern European country filled with amazing views and lush landscapes. Sofia, on the western side of the country, is the capital city. Varna, on the
opposite end of the country, borders the Black Sea. Take this train trip to see the majestic Balkan mountains that run east-west through the center of the country

Book Tickets Online

Step1
Make sure you have your passport handy before booking online. You'll need to enter your passport number in order to be ticketed.
Step2
Book your tickets through the Rail Europe Web site (see Resources below). You can also book by phone at 1-888-382-RAIL. The journey will be inexpensive.
Step3
Consider buying a Eurail or Balkan Rail pass , depending on your future travel plans. Information about both of these passes is available on the Rail Europe Web site.

Get Ready for Your Train Journey to Varna

Step1
Plan to be on the train for approximately 5.5 hours.
Step2
Bring your camera. You'll be traveling from the Bulgarian capital to Varna, the busiest train stop in the country. You'll get the chance to see a wide cross-section of
Bulgarian landscape as well as a variety of travelers--students, businesspeople and tourists.
Step3
Don't expect Orient Express-level luxury. Many of Bulgaria's trains were put into service during the Communist era. As a result, the trains are somewhat old and can
move at a crawl when crowded or going through mountain passes.

Book Train Travel in Person or Through an Agent

Step1
Book tickets through an agent who can help you surmount the language barrier. If you don't want to book online and don't speak Bulgarian, an agent is your best bet for
putting an itinerary together.
Step2
Book tickets at the Sofia Central Station, located at Maria Luisa Blvd. You can dial the Sofia Central Station at 011 (02) 931 11 11 or 011 (02) 932 33 33 for incidental
information on train departures

Getting There By Rail

Sofia
The Bulgarian State Railway, Balgarski Darzhavni Zheleznitsi (tel: (02) 931 1111 or 932 3333; website: www.bdz.bg), runs cheap and extensive services throughout the
country, although trains can be very slow. The monumental, concrete Tsentralna Gara, Sofia's main station, is located at bulvard Maria Louiza 112, a 20-minute walk north
of the city centre. Facilities include left-luggage, money exchange kiosks, ATMs, bars and fast-food outlets (although the choice of refreshments is much better at the bus
station). Tickets for lines covering the northern half of Bulgaria are sold on the ground floor of the station - all others are sold in the basement. International tickets are
bought down the left-hand passageway from the entrance hall, from Rila (tel: (02) 832 3346). To avoid queuing, tickets can also be purchased from the Transport Service
Centre (TsKTON) in the National Palace of Culture (NDK) underpass (tel: (02) 932 4280) or from Rila Tours, ulitsa Gurko 5 (tel: (02) 987 0777). Visitors should direct all
national rail enquires to Balgarski Darzhavni Zheleznitsi (see above).
Rail services: From Sofia there are six main routes - to Varna or Bourgas on the Black Sea coast, to Plovdiv and beyond on the Turkish border, to Kalotina on the
Yugoslavian border, to Kulata on the Greek border and to Ruse on the Romanian border. There are also daily services to Belgrade (8 hours), Bucharest (11 hours),
Budapest (16 hours), Istanbul (15 hours), Kiev (38 hours), Moscow (45 hours), St Petersburg (65 hours) and Thessaloniki (10 hours).

TRAVELERS GUIDE FOR BULGARIA 32
Picking the right place
The right place is the non-traditional vacation spots. Do you want sun and surf? Then give the Mediterranean coast of Croatia a try or the Black Sea coast of
Bulgaria. Both locations have great weather, sandy beaches but not the over priced hotels as other vacation hot spots. Moreover, after a few years when these
locations become the hot spots you can brag that you were there before it became the hottest place to vacation in Europe. In general northern Europe is the
most expensive and eastern Europe the cheapest.
Timing
Off-season just means before or after the vacation rush. Many hotels and campgrounds reduced their prices up to as much as 80% after the summer holidays.
Italy is a popular destination to visit during the summer but by waiting a few extra weeks, you can save a lot on hotels. For vacationers with children this can
be a problem but spending fall or spring vacation at a resort in Italy still means you can appreciate the price reductions. For winter sports such as skiing, the
Chamonix-Mont Blanc ski season is from December to early May. Why go to the crowded slopes in February when April is less crowded and cost less?
Transport
Avoid train reservations and supplements
Although most high-speed trains require reservations and/or supplements, it's often possible to avoid paying these supplements when you research alternative
routes! This means that you'll use domestic trains which are slower, but it normally means also that your travel is free from those extra costs.
Use your InterRail travel days wisely
Do you travel with an InterRail One Country Pass or an InterRail Global Pass with flexible travel days? Then use your travel days only for longer or multiple
train journeys. If you only want to travel a short distance, then buy a separate ticket or take a cheap bus. Also keep in mind the the 7 pm rule. If you board a
direct, overnight train after 7 pm, only the following day of travel is counted.
Local transport
Big cities often have various train stations, so you can use your InterRail Pass to go from one part of the city to another by train. In bigger German cities,
your InterRail Pass is also valid on the S-Bahn (but not on the U-Bahn).
If you will make extensive use of public transport in one city, then travelcards will be cheaper than single tickets, especially for a longer period. For example:
in Stockholm a single ticket will cost you 20 SEK, a day card cost 100 SEK and a 7-day card is 260 SEK (9 SEK is approx. 1 euro).
Apart from public transport and walking, you can also hire a bike. Bicycle rentals can be found near most train stations. In some countries there are even
free or cheap city bikes, for example in Copenhagen.
Accomodation
Hotels and hostels
Many luxury hotels have lower fares for mid-week visitors. Hostels are usually cheaper than hotels, especially when you don't insist on having a private
room. A membership of Hostelling International will grant you discounted overnight prices in a large network of hostels. Many hostels will rent sleep-sheets to
you for an additional cost, so bringing your own is cheaper. You can also consider staying at a bed & breakfast which exist in all price ranges. You can find
addresses in directories like this one.

A relatively new phenomenon is couch surfing, which is a social network for travellers. People from around the world are willing to share their homes with
fellow travelers for free. Some of the most popular networks are CouchSurfing International, Global Freeloaders and Stay 4 Free.
Tip: if you take a night train, you have to pay a supplement, but you save on accomodation cost.
Sightseeing
Tourist cards
Most cities have special tourist cards with discounts on museums, restaurants and public transportation. For instance, the Krakow Tourist Card grants tourist
free museum access, and bus usage. Another example is the Bratislava City Card available in Slovakia which gives free admission to museums, art galleries
and a discount on a city walking tour. These cards can be found at local tourist information centers.
Student & youth cards
There are several student or youth cards with interesting discounts on museums, zoos and other sights. The best known student cards are ISE and ISIC. Non-
students under 26 can apply for the Euro<26 card or the International Youth Travel Card (IYTC).
Museums
In some cities you can visit (national) museums for free, like in London. In other places museums offer free admission once a week, like in Copenhagen. There
are also various yearly museum nights in Europe with free entrance, e.g. in Berlin.
Eating and shopping
Food
Eat local food and picnic where you can. Just buy food in supermarkets or at a market and search for a spot with a nice view to eat your meal. Tourist areas
are full of restaurants calling out for more customers but by walking just a few extra streets further, you can find nice quite restaurants with lower
prices. Especially in university areas you can often find budget cafes and restaurants.
You can also consider having your main meal during lunchtime, when menus are usually cheaper. Many hostels have bagged lunches to order or small picnic
boxes. Carry a water bottle and refill from drinking taps.
Souvenirs
Go to to shopping centers to look for gifts in place of expensive gift shops aimed at tourists. Giving dry goods from foreign countries make interesting gifts.
Travel guides
Investing in a good travel guide could save you money eventually. The following guides are aimed at low-budget travel in Europe:
 Rough Guide: Europe on a Budget
 Lonely Planet: Europe on a Shoestring
 Let's Go: Europe on a Budget
 Thomas Cook: Europe by Rail

TRAVELERS GUIDE FOR BULGARIA 34
Vicky Robinson took a month out to go InterRailing and discover the magic of Europe. Starting
with the Eurostar to Paris and hopping from one train to another, she visited France, Belgium, the
Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Greece. An adventure she will never forget!

Vicky travelled with a 2nd class youth InterRail Global Pass, valid for a month, costing her € 399. This Pass
can be used for train travel in 30 participating countries.

"I met some great people and had some great experiences. I definitely want to do it again!"

Discovering Europe’s major cities

Having spent most of her gap year travelling in Asia and Australia, Vicky decided it was time to discover
destinations closer to home. “I wanted to visit Europe’s well-known major cities, such as Paris, Amsterdam, Milan and Rome and see some of the classic
sights.
“It soon became clear that InterRailing was the ideal way to get around”, recalls Vicky. “With one pass I could jump straight onto most trains (some trains
require a reservations or supplement) and, although I had a rough idea of where I wanted to get to, I had the freedom to be spontaneous. I was given some
information on InterRail, including the InterRail Trend Guide which listed loads of festivals and events going on across Europe, so I tried to plan my route
and timing around this, as well as stopping off at the cities I wanted to see”.
To Paris and Amsterdam
Vicky started in London, taking the Eurostar to Paris for a few days sightseeing and shopping, visiting all the typical tourist sites including the Eiffel Tower,
the Latin Quarter and the Champs-Elysées.

From Paris it was only a 2 ½ hour ride to Bruges before going to Amsterdam. Of course this city is famous for its Red Light District, but there is loads to do
and see beside this, including the Anne Frank house, which Vicky found extremely moving. She also went to Parkpop in The Hague, Europe’s largest free
pop festival.

Canal in Amsterdam.
Enjoying Berlin and Munich
From Amsterdam the night train took her to what she found to be one of Europe’s most exciting cities,
Berlin. Then it was off to Munich. “I was too early for the Oktoberfest, but managed to sample plenty of the
Bavarian beer! I recovered from my beer-hall hangover on a short train trip past the Bavarian mountains to
the famous and dream-like Neuschwanstein castle. Apparently this is where Walt Disney got inspired”.

Scenic rides through Austria
Heading into Austria, Vicky travelled to Salzburg (where The Sound of Music was filmed) and then on, past the impressive Alps, to the Zurich festival.
From here it was a short ride to lakeside Lucerne. “This is where I experienced one of the most impressive train journeys”, remembers Vicky. “I took the
Wilhelm-Tell Express, which begins on a paddle-steamer on the lake and finishes with a ravine-passing train
ride to Lugano”.

Impressed by Italy
The next leg of Vicky’s trip was Italy for a more relaxed impression of Europe. “I spent nearly two weeks
travelling this part of Europe from Milan to Venice and then onto Tuscany to Florence and Siena. Next
came Rome, which became one of my favourite cities as
there was so much to see, including the Colosseum and the
Vatican City”.

Greek treasures
From Bari, Vicky took the Superfast Ferry to Patras in Greece for the final part of her trip. Just two hours
from the ferry is Olympia, where the Olympic games originated from. Next came Corinth where, after
visiting the ancient ruins, a very brave Vicky decided to bungee jump over the 3000-year-old canal: “this
was one of the highlights of the trip, scary but thrilling!” Vicky’s last days were spent in Athens and an
unmissable visit to the Acropolis.

Note: InterRailers pay only a small surcharge for this ferry. To be repeated!
“Flying home from Athens felt strange as I was so used to taking the train by then. Staring out of the window looking
at nothing but clouds, I realised that I’d definitely chosen the right kind of trip. I got to see so many sights, just by
sitting back and staring out of a train window. I met some great people and had some great experiences. I definitely
want to do it again, perhaps next time visiting some of Eastern Europe."
Vicky's journey ENDS
