My Dear Friends in Christ,

In todays Gospel reading (John 8:1-11) the scribes and the
Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle.
All of us have made mistakes. The righteous had stones in
their hands ready to throw and simply needed a nod from
Jesus.
Instead of joining them, Jesus responded by writing on the
ground. All eyes suddenly focused on him, trying to figure
out what he was writing, instead of on the woman. When
we want to blame someone or judge them, we need to refocus-to look at Jesus.
In the end, the one who died by the hands of the religious
leaders was not the woman who committed adultery, but
Jesus himself. Jesus, the one who refused to accuse, was
falsely accused. Jesus, who advocated for the woman despite her sin, was refused mercy.

Yours in Christ,
Fr. Pedro Umaa, OFM
