Drenched by March Miracle, Northern California reservoirs inch toward capa
city
A series of storms pushed Californias biggest reservoir past its historical a
verage for mid-March this weekend and put the second largest one on track for do
ing the same by Monday afternoon, officials said. Together the Lake Shasta and L
ake Oroville reservoirs have the capacity to hold more than 8 million acre feet
of water and after a wet weekend in Northern California, they were 79% and 70% f
ull, respectively, by Monday morning, according to the state Department of Water
Resources. The storms filled Lake Shasta above its average for this time of yea
r and by 2 p.m. Monday, Lake Oroville could surpass its historic average, said D
WR spokesman Doug Carlson. Lake Shasta is the state s largest reservoir.

WASHINGTON, March 14 (UPI) -- While reviewing Pluto images captured by the N
ew Horizons probe last summer, scientists noticed what looks like a giant "bite
mark" on the surface of the dwarf planet. Researchers believe the missing chunk

of planetary flesh was lost via sublimation, a phase change from solid to gas. A
s a portion of Pluto s methane ice-rich surface vaporized, a patch of water ice
was revealed below. In the photos a young crater-free stretch of icy plains call
ed Piri Planitia can be seen bordered by cliffs, scarps and mesas to the west an
d south. A fault line called Inanna Fossa lies to the northeast. Compositional d
ata collected by New Horizons suggest the plateau to the south of

Joanne Dennehy: Triple killer sues for prison trauma
Triple killer Joanne Dennehy is seeking compensation for her solitary confin
ement in jail claiming it is a violation of her human rights. Dennehy, 33, from
Peterborough, is serving life for murdering three men whose bodies were found in
ditches in Cambridgeshire in 2013. She also attempted to murder two men in Here
ford. In a High Court challenge, barrister Hugh Southey QC said continued isolat
ion left her "tearful and upset". Dennehy is challenging justice secretary Micha
el Gove over HMP Bronzefield s decision to continue to keep her separated from o
ther prisoners, which entails long periods of isolation. She is "arguably the mo
st dangerous female prisoner in custody", Jenni Richards QC, for

forgot his wallet, she offered to pay his $7 grocery bill. "I paid for the groce

joint US-South Korean military exercise held in North Korea s backyard. The ope
ration runs contemporaneously as another US military exercise in South Korea, Op
eration Key Resolve, which starts March 7 and ends March 18. The operations in t
otal involve about 17,000 US troops, along with an astonishing 300,000 of their
South Korean counterparts. North Korea views the drills as aggressive and denoun
ces them each year. Pyongyang has ratcheted up the rhetoric and warned that its
armed forces "holding tightly the arms to annihilate the enemies with towering h
