VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball is a sport played by two teams on a court divided by a net.
HISTORY
William G. Morgan, an athletics instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association
(YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis,
and handball to create a physic game for his classes which would demand less physical
contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball. Morgan borrowed the net
from tennis, and raised it just above the average man's head.
After that moment it became a very famous sport, first in USA only but then in the
20th century it spread all over the world (especially in Asia and URSS).
The international federation was created in 1947, and in that moment all the countries
adopted the same rules.
In 1964, Olympic Games in Tokyo volleyball became an Olympic Sport, and the first
medal golds went to URSS in male competition and Japan in the female one.

TECHNIQUE
A) THE SERVE:
The serve begins play, and it can be decisive in a game. A missed serve counts as a fault. There are
many types of serve: underhand, sidearm, or overhand motion to strike the ball, standing in a
stationary position or jumping in the air. We will learn the basic one, the underhand service. During
the service if the ball touches the net and goes to the other side the game continues as normal.
.
The Server
- Stands with both feet in the service area: behind the baseline of the volleyball court.
One player serves continuously until his or her team commits a fault, after which the opposite
team rotates and serves the ball.
E) THE BLOCK:
-The block is the first defensive action a team makes. It
can be individual, double or triple.
The block is the only action that doesnt count as a touch,
so after a failure block the defensive team still has three
touches, but without the same player touching the ball
twice consecutively.
During the block the arms and hands can pass to the other side of the net without touching it.
F) THE DIG
Digging is the ability to prevent the ball from touching one's
court after a spike or attack, particularly a ball that is nearly
touching the ground
Positions:
There are six positions in the court. Three in the front line and three in the back line. Players must
keep their positions before the other team serves. After the server hits the ball, player can move
freely.
Starting at the serving position and going clockwise, the positions are numbered 1-6. Number one is
the server (right back when facing the net).
Rotation:
Every time your team gains the possession of the ball, your whole team must rotate one position
clockwise. So the player that was in position number 2 goes to position number 1 and serves. Player
that was on number one moves to number 6 and so on.
Each player must be within the court at the time the ball is served. All players must be in their
correctly rotated position. If one player is out of his position, the team commits a rotation fault
and they lose a rally.
