HudsonValley New York portrait painter Nadine Robbins’ painting called “The Rolling
Buns” from “The 8 portrait peaces” project accepted into prestigious Royal Society of
Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition May 6th to 21st, 2010
May 2010
Mall Galleries, London SW1 and Rhinebeck, NY, USA
What do the entertainer Bruce Forsyth, the Justice Secretary Jack Straw, the American
footballerAnitye Plahar and the explorer Sir Chris Bonington have in common?
Their portraits will be hanging in the Society’s exhibition which open next May. Family
portraits are particulary popular this year and these include June Mendoza’s portrait of
her four children and Simon Davis’s charming portrayal of “three boys in a tree”.
Since 1891 the Society has been devoted exclusively to the art and development of
portrait painting. The selection of work on display, both from its members and the open
section make it the perfect destination for those wishing to commission a portrait.
Portraiture is a fascinating barometer of current trends and holds a mirror up to nature in
reflecting life in contemporary Britain.
Prizes awarded by the Society are the Ondaatje Prize for Portraiture, the Prince of Wales
Award for Portrait Drawing, the Changing Faces Prize and the de Laszlo Foundation
Prize. The winner of the third Bulldog Bursary, awarded by the Society and sponsored by
the Bulldog Trust, will also be announced.
Over 200 portraits by 100 artists, including Nadine Robbins, will be hung in this
exhibition which is one of the year’s top art events held in the center of London at the
Mall Galleries. Its continued popularity is testament to the unique and enduring qualities
of painted portraiture and the valid practice of commissioning painted portraits by
institutions and individuals.
The exhibition runs from 5/6-21 2010 (closes at 1pm on the final day) from 10am to 5pm.
Tuesdays and Thursdays open until 7pm.
Her portrait work has recently been published in Roll Magazine, Poets and Artists, HV
Biz and she was featured as one of 20-2D artists from the Hudson Valley in Inside Out
Magazine, The art Issue: The Hudson Valley 100. In 2009, she had a portrait called
“Crabby Cakes” selected to be included in “Figures” a prestigious juried competition and
Exhibition at The Art Guild, Manhasset, NY. In 2010, her painting from the “8 portrait
peaces” series called “The Rolling Buns” will be included in the Royal Society of Portrait
Painters Annual Exhibition.
Nadine Robbins attended the Middlesex Polytechnic in London, College de Sollies Pont
in France and received her B.F.A. in Graphic Design from the State University of New
York at New Paltz, graduating Cum Laude.
Artist statement:
Whether it be commercial art, computers, fine art or life, all of my knowledge has come
together for this project. The “8 portrait peaces” project has created a history of a very
important time in my life. It's a documentary of a bright path after having been in a dark
place for far too long. Each step of this project (from the search for creative people to
paint, the interviews, the photography, the blog, the painting, the marketing, the good,
and the bad) represents an answer to a question. Each answer has helped me find peace.
Peace will guide me forward.
These portraits are in their entirety, a piece of art, a piece of my history and what can
happen when you finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
