Does not respond to any
encouragement or prompts, makes
no attempt to communicate. Makes
no attempt to ask for clarification of
what is being asked.
Student is unintelligible. Nothing
can be understood.
Inadequate and/or inaccurate use of
vocabulary.

26-50
Speaks haltingly with long pauses. Does
not make an attempt to answer questions
or to respond to prompts. Makes little
attempt to ask for clarification of what is
being asked.
Pronunciation is not at all clear and the
student cannot be understood.
Somewhat inadequate and/or inaccurate
use of vocabulary.

51-75
Mostly speaks with few hesitations. Generally
responds to questions and prompts. Sometimes
asks for clarification of what is being asked.

76-100
Always speaks fluently with few hesitations.
Responds readily to questions. Asks for
clarification if not sure of the question being
asked

Most words are pronounced clearly and the


student can be understood.
Adequate and accurate use of vocabulary.

Pronunciation is clear and distinct all of the time


and does not interfere with meaning.
Rich use of vocabulary.

Grammar

Few correctly structured sentences,


or single words

Incomplete sentences, or serious errors in


structure.

Some trouble with word order or grammatical


structures, but complete sentences.

Sentences are complete. Word order and other


structures are correct.

Ideas and content

Says practically nothing. Focuses


primarily on irrelevant content.
Highly egocentric

Provides enough information that covers all


the required components. Focuses primarily
on relevant content. Sticks to the topic. Adapts
the content in a general way to the listener and
situation. Uses words and concepts which are
appropriate for the knowledge and experience
of general audience.

out. Use clear details that support the main ideas,
familiar with the topics. Thought about the

Organization

The message is so disorganized.
