Family Traditions:
Family Traditions (and culture) may be big things or small things that help define your
family. Often, family traditions are centered on how we celebrate birthdays and holidays
or how we eat meals. You may also consider your family traditions and culture to be the
way your family views certain events of daily life. For your project, you may choose to
write about AT LEAST five family traditions or ways that your family works that may be
different from other families. It may be easier to think about a friend’s family, and then
realize how your family is different to help decide what your family traditions may be.

Family Traditions may change over time, as your family changes. For example, when my
mom married my step-dad the way we celebrated holidays and interact as a family
changed a lot. It is possible that you used to have a family tradition that doesn’t happen
anymore or that you have a new “tradition” in your family because your family has
changed.

A few examples from Ms. Harcrow’s family:

1. In my family, we open one present on Christmas Eve and save the rest for
Christmas morning.
2. We aren’t big present people. For birthdays we usually get flowers from my mom
and we may enjoy a dinner with friends, but it’s usually not about the gifts. It’s
more about the people.
3. We aren’t big birthday people either. Even when my mom turned 60, it wasn’t a
big show.
4. My stepdad works for the Texans, so Sundays during football season we all go to
the games instead of church. Often, the football games are a time to be with family
more than anything.
5. In my family we don’t always pick each other up from the airport. Even if we are
coming home from being away for months, my mom sometimes will get us to
catch a cab or get a ride with a friend. For some people this would be hurtful, but
in my family it is just the way things are some of the time. We love each other a
lot, but I can’t remember a time my mom came inside at the airport.

After reading the above explanation of family traditions and examples from Ms.
Harcrow’s family. Think about your own family traditions and culture. What is
something about your family that is either a tradition or part of your family?
How is your family different from other families in the way they celebrate
holidays, birthdays, eat dinner, or just live life?
