All Kids First 100th day of

school celebration was celebrated on February 16. Over
200 students and staff celebrated by dressing like they
were 100 years old. Activities
included searching for 100
items in their classrooms,
reading number books, talking
about what they would want
100 of and what they wouldn't
want 100 of and much more. It
was a fun and educational day
for all.

VHS Seniors Named to

Regional, State Honors
Bands
Two Vineland High School students were
recently selected for Regional and State
Honors Bands according to Bill McDevitt,
music director at VHS.
Alphonso Gonzalez, a senior, successfully auditioned for the All-South Jersey
Honors Band, sponsored by The South
Jersey Band and Orchestra Directors Association (SJBODA), and was selected
for the Symphonic Band. Gonzalez, who began playing music at 10 years old,
plays piano and several woodwind instruments and plays mallet instruments for
the VHS Marching Band. He is also an avid composer who has been accepted by
the Cali School of Music at Montclair University, where he will be majoring in
Music Theory and Composition in the Fall of 2016. He has received two gold
medals from the Olympiada of Spoken Russian, hosted by Temple University,
and has studied martial arts for the past five years.
Dimitri Raimonde, also a senior, was accepted to the South Jersey Symphonic
Band and the New Jersey All-State Band, where he was placed in the Wind
Ensemble. He finished as number 3 trumpet in the state. In the past, Raimonde
has been selected for the South Jersey Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Wind
Ensemble and Brass Ensemble. He is currently the lead trumpet in the VHS
Marching Band. Outside of school, Raimonde is the associate principal trumpet
of the South Jersey Pops Orchestra, and is an Eagle Scout with four palms. He
has been accepted to multiple universities to continue his study of music, but is
still currently undecided.
Every year, more than 800 students audition for acceptance to the South
Jersey Ensembles. Students attend intense rehearsals for three days and perform in concerts at Rowan University. Once accepted to the South Jersey Band,
they are eligible to audition for All-State. These students then attend two days of
rehearsal at Rutgers University and perform a concert at the New Jersey
Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ.

Eastlyn Golf Course. Bob once owned

Carlos Pizza on Chestnut Avenue, and later
started up the Eatem Foods Company,
which manufactured soup bases. The business thrived. He and his partners became
successful leaders in the food industry, and
after 30 years, they decided to sell that
company.
We thought it was my fathers last business venture. We were wrong. He went into
business with me and purchased Eastlyn
Golf Course and The Greenview Inn. Three
business in one, the golf, fine dining restaurant and banquet facility, said Rob.
It keeps me really busy and allows him
to do what he does bestpublic relations,
he jokes. Now he enjoys the golf course
and restaurant as part of his retirement. He
and my mother, Rosemary a retired labor
and delivery nurse at Newcomb Hospital,
are enjoying life with their grandchildren.
Rob Buono tells the story of the Double
Eagle: When we decided to expand and
remodel Eastlyn Golf Course a few years
back, I became interested in the Old Good
Sports Bar and Grill, which is now the
Double Eagle Saloon. Every day I would
drive by this corner on Panther and Italia
and see this dilapidated run-down building.
I purchased it from Joe Delio and the
rest is history. Now we are proud and excited to operate a local saloon for our community.
Rob credits his brother, Nick, for coming
up with the logo and name: The double
eagle is a very rare score to get in golf. I
wanted something related to golf and something patriotic. The logo of the Double Es
facing each other gives the look of our
nations bird, the bald eagle. A lot of thought
went into our business name and logo.
St. Patrick's Day week is our Grand
Opening, with the big celebration falling on
March 17, which will start with a parade of
fun followed by three more days of cheers
on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We plan
on doing specials drinks, food, giveaways,
music and just show love and appreciation
to all our patrons and supporters. Hours of
operation are Wednesday through Monday,
11 a.m. until 12 midnight.
On Tuesday, The Eagle sleeps. I

Saloon burned down two
years ago, most of East
Vineland came to mourn
their neighborhood pub on Italia Avenue.
Many had spent the night before at the
pub, celebrating Cinco de Mayo, and enjoying the recently added outdoor deck and
bar. Sometime during that party, a piece of
trash was stuffed into a standing pedestal
ashtray, and smoldered there. The party
ended, and the place was empty when the
ashtray caught fire and burned the deck,
damaging much of the dining room as well.
I was a volunteer firefighter and got
the call around 5 a.m., Matt Carchidi said.
We all came here, you knowits a tough
thing to see. At least a hundred people
came out. They ordered pizza, brought out
cases of beer from a walk-in cooler that had
not been destroyed.
Eyeing the rubble the next day, ChefOwner Rob Buono vowed to rebuild.
On March 17, nearly two years later, the
Double Eagle Saloon will celebrate its
Grand Re-opening on St. Patricks Day.
Buono now has partners in ownership,
Jesse and Karen Morvay.
Manager Matt Carchidi of Vineland,
who worked for Buono at the Greenview
Inn and at the Double Eagle before the fire,
gives a quick tour of the new Saloon.
We expanded the deck outside to seat
65, and did away with the deck bar. Now we
have a service window so that drink orders
can be filled from the expanded, indoor bar.
Its more efficient than having two
bars, Carchidi said. We now have 22 bar
seats. We lost some tables in expanding the
kitchen and the bar, and the new computer
system is helping the chefs a lot.
Four large-screen TVs hang on the
inside walls, and two more outside.
In addition to Buono, the staff includes
two chefs and three or more bartenders.
And I do pretty much everything,
wherever Im needed, Carchidi said.
The saloon has been open a couple of
weeks leading up to the Grand Opening
this week. The average night so far has
been crazy, said the manager. Weve had
200 diners a day, and 300-plus at night.
After two years, a decent amount of people
came back. The customers are a mix of old
and young, families and farmers.
A list of featured beers hangs on a chalkboard over the bar. There are beers on tap
from local breweries, and 16 draft beers.

Trimble Named PE Teacher of the Year

At the New Jersey
Association for Health, Physical
Education, Recreation and
Dance (NJAHPERD) annual conference, Stacey Trimble, Health
and PE instructor at
Cumberland County Technical
Education Center was honored
as the Physical Educator of the
Year. This is a great honor as
only six teachers are honored in
New Jersey.
Trimble started her career at Oakcrest High School in 2004, but decided to go
back to her hometown Millville New Jersey, in the hope that she could give back
to the town, teachers and mentors that inspired her as a youth and young adult.
In Millville, Stacey worked on the Safe Dates Grant as Grant Coordinator, creating and implementong a family life curriculum for six school districts and
helped to design and pilot a data collection program for RWJF (Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation). After completing the grant, Stacey taught Health, PE and
Driver Ed. for the Millville School District. She coached, started a Mentor
Program, ran Jump Rope for Heart events, fundraised for multiple charities,
received the Champion Schools Grant, and was the 2013 Teacher of the Year.
Stacey also ran the Wellness Team. She changed the climate of her school by
redesigning the Health and PE curriculum. She helped to improve the school
lunches, removed unhealthy snack machines and added fitness events and PD to
improve employee wellness. Because of these activities, her school received a
nationally recognized program called Alliance for a Healthier Generations
Bronze and Silver awards and the Lets Move Active Schools Bronze award.
Stacey also created, organized and facilitated an annual Fitness Field Day named
Hunger Games and received national recognition for the event that still runs
today at Memorial High School in Millville.
In 2013, Stacey received an opportunity to follow her heart to Cumberland
County Technical Education. She teaches the cognitively impaired and autistic
students. She feels blessed working as their Health/PE Teacher and Special
Olympics coach for its not what her students cant do, but all that they can do
that truly inspires her.campus. For more information visit EntrepreneursNJ.com

My mom was a great one for always

buying us kids special little mementos for
every holiday! She just loved to buy us stuff
for our Hope Chests and my favorite
treasures are the ones that we got for
Easter. Every year I take out the big box of
goodies and distribute the decorations
throughout the house. I have a special
place for each itemthe sterling silver
Easter Egg goes on my kitchen table in a little vignette of assorted porcelain chicks
and bunnies, and my collection of Anna Lee
dolls take up their yearly residence on my
fireplace mantel. These dolls are bunnies
and chicks made of a high-quality felt and
hand-painted with quaint features. They
are made exclusively by a company in New
Hampshire and I was happy to see them
once again for sale in the local stores.
Boscovs and Marshalls have a small supply
and they really are adorable!
Call me a big baby, but these little things
make me happy. Being surrounded by these
seasonal decorations not only heralds the
coming of Spring but reminds me of the
wonderful mom I had and how much she
loved us!
Mom would also do her special baking
for the Easter holiday and we would just
gobble up her Babkas and Easter Bread and
especially her cinnamon crumb cake. All
were great for an afternoon snack or breakfast. I know that Annie and her girls at
Crust n Krumbs are baking up their usual
Easter specialties like the sweet Easter
Bread and Bunny Cakes and cookiesgreat
for the family gatheringbut if you have the
time, here is a special little coffee cake that I
know Mom would have loved. It combines
two of her favorite ingredients, lemons and
rosemary, in a way that is not only unique
but so delicious! I found the lemon curd for
this recipe at ShopRite at Landis and Lincoln
avenues. So no excuse not to make it!

Lemon-Rosemary Coffee Cake

Parchment paper
3 large lemons
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup very cold butter, cubed
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup buttermilk
1 large egg
1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh
rosemary

1 (10-oz.) jar lemon curd

Powdered sugar
Garnishes: fresh rosemary sprigs,
lemon slices
Preheat oven to 350. Lightly grease bottom and sides of a nine-inch springform pan.
Line bottom of pan with parchment paper.
Grate zest from lemons to equal 1 Tbsp.
Cut lemons in half; squeeze juice from
lemons into a bowl to equal 5 Tbsp. Reserve
the zest and 1 Tbsp. of lemon juice.
Combine flour, sugar, and salt in bowl of a
food processor; pulse three to four times or
until blended. Add butter; pulse six to seven
times or until mixture resembles coarse
crumbs. Reserve 1 cup of this flour mixture.
Transfer remaining flour mixture to bowl
of a heavy-duty electric stand mixer. Add baking powder and baking soda; beat at low
speed until well blended. Add buttermilk, egg,
and 1/4 cup lemon juice; beat at medium
speed 1 1/2 to 2 minutes or until batter is
thoroughly blended, stopping to scrape bowl
as needed. Stir in rosemary. Spoon half of batter into prepared pan.
Whisk lemon curd in a small bowl about 1
minute or until loosened and smooth; carefully spread over batter in pan. Top with
remaining half of batter.
Stir together reserved lemon zest, 1 Tbsp.
lemon juice, and 1 cup flour mixture; sprinkle
this lemon zest mixture over batter in pan.
Bake at 350 for 45 to 50 minutes or until
a long wooden pick inserted in center comes
out clean.
Let cool in pan on a wire rack 10 minutes.
Gently run a sharp knife around edge of cake
to loosen; remove sides of pan. Cool cake
completely on wire rack (about 1 hour). Dust
with powdered sugar just before serving. I

reports that those were the days of small

things, when a little money went a good
ways, and trade was carried on by barter
rather than bank checks. Still the industrious and economical prospered, and to
this class Mr. Coffin belonged. The
sawmill was his principal industry until
1817, when in company with Jonathan
Haines, then in the business at
Clementon, Burlington County, he commenced the erection of a glass factory.
Haines and Coffin continued the business
until 1821, when the firm dissolved,
Haines moving to Waterford, and starting
the glass business at that place.
Glass factories had already been
sprouting up in southern New Jersey and
would soon spur the arrival of railroads to
transport products to the city. At this time,
stage lines still operated in the area, but
the Coffin glass factory transported its
goods by way of the forks of the Mullica
River.
The Coffin-Haines factory, according
to William McMahons South Jersey
Towns: History and Legend, was known for
manufacturing whiskey flasks that were
called by such names as Weeping Willow,
Eagle, Old Glory, Bunch of Grapes and
Sheaf of Rye.
Coffin continued to operate his sawmill
and glass factory but, in 1836, he leased
the works to his son Bodine and his sonin-law Andrew K. Hay. The new firm,
Coffin and Hay, only lasted two years and
the elder Coffin found himself back in
charge. He remained in control until his
death in 1844.
The passing of William Coffin left his
businesses in the hands of two other sons,
John Hammond Coffin and Edward
Winslow Coffin, who ran the mill and factory for two years before Edward decided
to sell his share to John.
Coffins name was never applied to the
new town, even though he had structured
the settlement with his enterprises, a
company store, houses for workers and a
school that doubled as a church. Instead,
just as Edwards middle name was used
for a nearby township, Hammonton was
christened from the middle name of John
and, in its first true incarnation, was
known as Hammondton, a variation of
Hammondtown. I

ive years after Vinelands sesquicentennial celebration,

Hammonton joins the ranks of
150-year-old towns, enjoying a
yearlong series of events and activities to
honor its noteworthy anniversary.
However, Hammonton is actually significantly older than Vineland yet has chosen
to mark its beginnings by the date it was
incorporated rather than by its earliest
incarnation or its subsequent rebirth
involving Charles K. Landis.
The origins of Hammonton can be
traced back to two tracts of land that were
combined to form the town in the early
19th century. One tract, a small portion of
13,821 acres owned by the West New
Jersey Society and sold to William
Richards in 1805, was purchased by
William Griffith in 1808. This land consisted of 654 acres. A year earlier, Griffith
was deeded 944 acres that had originally
belonged to the Kirkbride family. In 1808,
both tracts became the property of John
R. Coates.
As these land transactions occurred,
the settlement may very well have had its
start in the form of several cabins in the
vicinity of what is now Hammonton Lake,
according to the 1889 Illustrated History
of the Town of Hammonton with an
Account of its Soil, Climate and Industries.
An Irish mythical first settlerkept a
groggery [pub] at this most lonesome spot
in the wilderness, the book reports.
Such a location might have been fit for a
moonshiner, but could hardly have been
a profitable location for a liquor saloon,
even at a time when everybody drank.
This Irishman's name was Mullen, and it
is barely possible that he may have eked
out a feeble existence entertaining the few
travelers who in those days journeyed
from the city to the sea. It is not known
what transpired of this early inhabitant,
but by the time William Coffin arrived in
1812, the first proper settlement was ready
to be born.
Coffin, whose family hailed from
Nantucket, Massachusetts, had been living
in Burlington County and entered into an
agreement with Coates to establish and
operate a sawmill on the land that became
Hammonton. But Coffin was ambitious
and, after managing the mill for several
years, purchased it and the land in 1814.

History of the Town of Hammonton
