Gorden, The Doorman

SCENE 1
A bright song is playing and Lights fade in. GORDEN is
getting ready. GORDEN wears doorman attire and only changes
into a new pair of socks. He makes toast for his cat,
SPARKY, and places it into the food bowl before leaving out
to work. Short scene showing his commute to his job. Extras
pass him by in black and gray business clothes. GORDEN
enters Hotel Lobby.
NARRATOR. This is GORDEN. GORDEN was the door man of the
hotel and was having a swell time holding doors.
GORDEN is holding the door with a straight face as he
stereotypically should then slowly smiles.(ding here) He
possibly greets a few people passing through.
NARRATOR. The hotel manager swaggered over to speak to
GORDEN
BOSS. Hey Gord.
NARRATOR. His BOSS is a jerk.
[GORDEN nods.]
[door assembly begins.]
NARRATOR. Gordens BOSS looked outside while GORDEN was
holding the door.
Boss. Fine day isn't it.
GORDEN checks weather outside to verify.
GORDEN. It is.
BOSS. [awkward silence] okay. Right... Uh... GORDEN come
here for a second...
NARRATOR. As Gordens BOSS pulled him away from his post,
there were people carrying door pieces across outside. The
crew began installing the revolving door. GORDEN would
subtly glance to the side at the new door being put in,
watching uncomfortably. BOSS acknowledges the door situation
as well.
BOSS. yes, uh huh, yeah.
NARRATOR. As if that really explained anything

BOSS. [Turns to leave] Oh and don't bother showing up


tomorrow.
[GORDEN seems a tad bit lost.]Youre being replaced.
[the BOSS says obviously then continues walking away]
A brighter light shines on door being assembled. GORDEN
stands in a single spot light looking at it shocked while
the set is transitioned to end of the day.
SCENE 2
GORDEN leaves the hotel and walks home.
NARRATOR. GORDEN's world fell apart the way you wake up
late. It started off slow and then everything else happened
in a rush. GORDEN was given his final check then left.
That day, GORDENs walk home was uneventful.
GORDEN walks home. GORDEN is possibly too sad to notice any
accidents happening around him.
accident: LADY drops groceries, bag of oranges and a bottle
of orange juice. Gorden places the bottle upright instead of
picking it up and giving it to the lady. He then continues
to walk
SCENE 3
The lights in GORDEN's apartment are off and GORDEN turns on
lamp revealing his minimalist lifestyle, again. He then
slides into bed with his uniform.
NARRATOR. GORDEN lied awake feeling too sad to sleep.
[light change indicating transition from day to night.]
NARRATOR. The phone going to voicemail is what got Gorden
out of bed.
GORDEN walks over to his dresser.
Boss. Hey its Harvin.
[BOSS is stage left, continuously walking through new
revolving door. Possibly an accident happens]
I'm just calling to remind you not to come in today. Kay
bye.
NARRATOR. GORDEN then prepared for his big day of job
hunting. He put another piece of toast next to the other
one, took off his socks and threw the old pair into the

trash can. He then grabbed a file folder before he was out


the door. [If there's a delay the the narrator says] He did
so, Quickly.
GORDEN walks out and wall is moved forward. Video is
projected on wall.
SCENE 4
VIDEO ELEMENT
EXT. SIDEWALK - MORNING
Camera on files in his hands. Pans photos of doors he wants
to hold open, then wide view of him comparing them to doors
on the buildings around him.
VOICE NARRATOR
GORDEN continued to search for the
perfect door until he found one
that pleased him, somewhat.
EXT. DIFFERENT LOBBY DOORS - MOMENTS LATER
GORDEN attempts to open automatic door but then walks away.
Fast.
VOICE NARRATOR
umm..
GORDEN enters another building for first interview.
INT. A LOBBY - AFTERNOON
GORDEN
Id like to be interviewed, right
now.
He hands over a resume of all the different types of wood
the doors he's held have been made of. Also knobs he's
turned.
INTERVIER
Okay? Sure?

VOICE NARRATOR
Gorden lists all of the different
types of wood the doors he's held
have been made of. Also knobs he's
turned.
Simultaneously Gorden is listing the knobs that hes turned.
GORDEN
I have a pewter rosette at home.
its got a stunning metallic finish.
CUT IN
GORDEN is gesturing how to open a door.
VOICE NARRATOR
The man laughed obnoxiously in
GORDEN's face and GORDEN left
unsure of the situation.
BACK TO SCENE
EXT. SIDEWALK - LATER
GORDEN steps back outside, and goes home, giving up.
INT. APARTMENT DOOR - DAY
VOICE NARRATOR
GORDEN realized he was hungry and
ordered a pizza.
However, the only knowledge of
ordering pizza GORDEN has, comes
from what he's seen in movies and
television.
GORDEN attempts to order pizza.
CUT IN
Cliche scary movie pizza ordering scene.
VOICE NARRATOR
He polishes his collection of spare
door knobs while he waited for a
pizza to come. And coincidently,
there was a knock on the door.
BACK TO SCENE

There's a knock on the door so he goes and answers it.


PIZZA GUY
Hey do you know where 112 is?...
INSERT
Focus shifts from PIZZA Guy to pizza. Then, shows a view of
how hungry GORDEN is.
DOOR
Shows the door number: 564.
GORDEN
He snaps out of it
BACK TO SCENE
GORDEN
Thank you for the pizza.
He closes the door quickly
PIZZA GUY
He pounds on the door
Hey man, give it back! I dont know
what to do in this kind of
situation
GORDEN opens the box and looks at the pizza disappointed.
The pizza guy then walks in and is shocked that the door is
open. He steps back out stunned and apologizes.
I am so sorry. I thought you
wouldve locked the door but
GORDEN
I dont have a lock
VOICE NARRATOR
Never has GORDEN ever needed, a
lock?
PIZZA GUY
Im sorry man. Uh, you know what
keep the pizza. Keep it. Im gonna
go.

INT. APARTMENT - DAY


GORDEN takes pizza to kitchen to fix it.
He watches an infomercial about doors while eating pizza.
Once he's done with pizza he goes to the bowl over filling
with toast and goes looking for sparky.
EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD - EVENING
GORDEN goes down street saying sparky, come home! A little
girl playing with a ball joins in and copys him.
GORDEN
You look crazy doing that.
GIRL
Me?
GORDEN
Yeah, im the one with a cat. You
dont have a reason so you just
seem silly.
GIRL
Sparkys a dog name
GORDEN
Well thats what i originally
wanted. Sparky is my alternative
dog. It's the same thing as having
alternative medicine or using
alternative energy.
GIRL
Can my little brother be an
alternative little sister.
GORDEN
Well, yeah. I was one.
GIRL stops. GORDEN crosses the street then realizes shes not
next to him. He turns to her
GORDEN
What are you doing over there?
GIRL
Im not allowed to leave the block.

GORDEN
Oh... well, I am.
He continues looking.
After a while he goes back home. Opens closet and finally
changes out of uniform. He hangs it in the closet. SPARKY
sneaks out of the closet. GORDEN catches SPARKY and takes
him to the living room.
STAGE
GORDEN walks out onto stage, to the living room and falls
asleep, while watching tv. SPARKY runs away.
NARRATOR. Aw.
There will be a projection of light dancing on GORDENS face
resembling the tv. GORDEN wakes back up to turn off the tv
and resumes slumber.
SCENE 5
Light change for morning
NARRATOR. GORDEN wakes up blissfully then notices no toast
in bowl(He smiles)
He changes clothes, finally, and decides to go out for
breakfast.
Hes approaching a restaurant as house sets roll away.
Scene 6
GORDEN approaches the front of the restaurant.
NARRATOR. Just as GORDEN approached the door, a lady, the
kind you hear about in math problems, was leaving. (Lady
exits restaurant with a lot of sub sandwiches in her arms)
It hit GORDEN, he was struck by a notion that he, should
hold the door for her. And so he kindly did.
GORDEN holds the door for the LADY leaving.
NARRATOR. But to GORDENS inconvenience, behind him was a
group of people who also just so happened to decide that
they too wanted sandwiches for breakfast. So GORDEN held
that door, much longer than he originally intended to. It
was then, after the last person entered without a thank-you,
that GORDEN realized: He. Was holding. A door
