Abstract
Whey protein has gone through a number of phases over the years from
being used only by bodybuilders to now being used by athletes and casual
exercisers at all levels.
This article will get to the core of what science says about whey protein
powders. You will learn whether or not you should you use whey protein,
the differences between the various types of whey protein, and how to
make a smart purchase if you decide to use it.

Chapter 1
Rationale
Whey protein is a liquid byproduct of cheese production that is sold as
a dietary supplement in protein powders and shakes. Whey protein used to
be discarded by cheese manufacturers as a waste product.
Whey protein is also a complete protein that is fast and easy to digest.
Whenever we eat a protein source, our body uses the 20 amino acids
(which are the individual components of protein) to repair our bones,
muscles, organs and virtually every body part and tissue in the human
body. When a source of protein has all 9 essential amino acids, which are
amino acids your body needs to get from food, that food is said to be a
complete protein. Foods like meats, dairy, eggs and rare vegetable proteins
such as quinoa are complete proteins. On the other hand, most vegetables,
rice and starches are not complete proteins because they are missing one
or more of the essential amino acids.
Not only do foods have different amino acid profiles, but the rate at which
the protein is absorbed by your body can vary. Of the different measures of
protein absorption, one of the most popular is Biological Value (BV). Whey
protein just so happens to have the highest score possible with a Biological
Value of 100. This means that whey protein contains all the amino acids
needed to make a complete protein and is very easily digested by your
body.

Statement of the problem

What are the risk and benefits of whey protein and how can you make a
smart purchase if you will buy. This research will tackle all about whey
proteins and how to use them properly; the aims of this study are to aware
body builders and other people that are using whey protein products.

Significance of the study

This study will contribute to all using whey proteins specifically to body
builders that want to grow their muscles fast. They will now how to buy the
right product and how to use the product properly

Scope and limitation of the study

Scope
The scope of this study is up to the benefits, risk, how to use the product
and how to purchase right product properly.

Benefits
While no supplement can replace a diet of whole, natural, unprocessed
foods, whey protein can be useful for people with a very busy, on-the-go
lifestyle as a supplement to their normal diet.

The benefits of a high-quality whey protein supplement range from purely

aesthetic to health preserving. Heres a small list of 10 benefits that have
been associated with whey protein supplementation:

Weight Loss
Assists in increasing in muscle mass
Assist in cancer treatment
Increase in glutathione levels (your bodys main water-based antioxidant)
Decrease in HIV symptoms
Decrease in triglycerides
Decrease in total cholesterol while increasing HDL (good cholesterol)
Increase in immune system function
Increase in power in sports

Decreased recovery time and symptoms of over-training

Risks
Generally, most of the complications associated with whey protein intake
have to do with digestive issues, such as gas, bloating, headaches, cramps
and fatigue. None of these are generally considered life-threatening, more
so than annoying complications.
Most of the literature has shown that if youre experiencing any of have
these symptoms, they are most likely due to either the lactose (found more
in Whey Protein Concentrate) or sweeteners used more so than the whey
protein itself. With that said, there are different methods of whey
production, such as ion-exchanged that can influence how well your body
can utilize the protein, leading to improper digestion of the whey itself.

The biggest fear often expressed about whey protein intake is that too
much protein is bad for the kidneys. Research though has shown this is
not true at all in healthy individuals. For those with known kidney disease,
high protein diets can exacerbate pre-existing conditions. Healthy
individuals, without any underlying or unknown kidney disease have
nothing to worry about with higher intakes of protein.
What does occur with higher protein intakes is your body adapts to the
increase in protein by increasing glomerular filtration rates.

How to make smart purchase

There are various qualities people will look for when purchasing a whey
protein supplement, which range from purity, to digestibility, to whether or
not its from an organic source, to quite simply the taste of the protein itself.
The key characteristics of the whey protein supplement is that it contains a
high amount of protein, very little to no artificial sweeteners and/or
hormones, all the beneficial components of the immunoglobulins,
minimization of lactose, while being somewhat palatable.
With all of those factors taken into consideration, whey protein isolate turns
to being your top pick, as it meets all the criteria. Whey Protein Isolate has
high amounts of protein, while minimizing the amount of lactose (found
more in WPC). WPI is easily digested and if cold-filtered can contain most
of the immunoglobulins, which the whey protein hydrolysate is typically
lacking due to the extreme processing it goes through. Also, although WPC
may taste a bit better, whey protein hydrolysate is not very palatable,
whereas you can find WPI brands with minimal artificial sweeteners that
still tastes good.

How to use the product

Whey Protein is easy to digest; the only time you would want to take whey
protein alone is within 30 to 60 minutes after a strength-training based
workout. At any other time, you would want to slow down the digestion of
the protein by eating it with other foods. For example, if you want extra
protein for breakfast, but dont want eggs, you can add the whey protein
powder to some oats, in various pancake recipes.
If on the other hand, youre looking for a quick snack at work, you can have
a shake with some nuts or fish oil to slow down the digestion of the protein.
The combination of the fat will help slow down the digestion of the protein,
thereby allowing insulin levels to stay level, while also stimulating CCK,
which is a hormone that helps tell your body that youre full.

Hypothesis
Many people wanted to try whey gain and other peoples dont because
they dont have much knowledge about whey proteins, sometimes they are
influence by others to use it.
People influence by using whey protein may have been studies whey
proteins and they know a lot about them.

Definitions of terms
Glomerular filtration rates - which means more fluid passes by your kidneys
and theres an increase in urine production.

Immunoglobulins also known as antibodies are glycoprotein molecules

produced by plasma cells (white blood cells).
Hydrolysaterefers to any product of hydrolysis. Protein hydrolysate has
special application in sports medicine because its consumption allows
amino acids to be absorbed by the body more rapidly than intact proteins,
thus maximizing nutrient delivery to muscle tissues.
Amino acids - are biologically important organic compounds containing
amine and carboxylic acid functional groups, usually along with a sidechain specific to each amino acid

Chapter 2
Review of Related Literature
A. Local Literature
According to Kath Rivera(2014),protein serves as a dietary source of
amino acids. The body needs amino acids to build the various proteins
used in the growth, repair and maintenance of body tissues such as skin,
bones and muscles.
Whet protein offers the benefits of supplying high nutritional value and
branched chain amino acids (BCAA). These are essential amino acids,
which are part of muscle protein. They may preserve muscle glycogen
stores and help reduce the amount of protein breakdown during exercise.
Additionally, the natural components of whey help to enhance the bodys
production of glutathione, a natural antioxidant which may provide dietary
support to the immune system. Whey also yields a high biological value
which measures usable grams of amino acids used by the body after
intense exercise

B. Foreign Literature
According to Joseph Nordqvist(2015), there are many benefits
associated with the consumption of whey protein, and researchers are
constantly finding new possible therapeutic properties.

Milk is made of two proteins, casein and whey. Whey protein can be
separated from the casein in milk or formed as a by-product of cheese
making.
Whey protein is considered a complete protein and contains all 9 essential
amino acids and is low in lactose content. People commonly use it as
supplementation, alongside resistance exercise, to help improve muscle
protein synthesis and promote the growth of lean tissue mass.
Examples of possible health benefits of consuming whey protein are aiding
weight loss, anti-cancer properties, lowering cholesterol, treating asthma,
lowering blood pressure and reducing risk of cardiovascular disease.

Note that many of these potential benefits are based on single studies and
more evidence is required before making definitive judgment.

Research design and Methodology

Descriptive and quantitative research designs are applied in this research.

That is because the researchers believe that this method will help the study
to be more effectively by gathering the respondents personal opinions and
experiences.
Descriptive research seeks to describe the current status of an identified
variable or phenomenon. The researcher does not usually begin with a
hypothesis, but is likely to develop one after collecting data

Quantitative method is useful when a researcher seeks to study large-scale

patterns of behavior. Quantitative methods include experiments, surveys,
and statistical analysis, among others. Qualitative methods include
participant observation, interviews and content analysis.

The following questions are ones included in the survey:

Do you add whey protein to your diet?
If yes, what influenced you?
Do you use whey protein while having known about its benefits and
risk effects?
Did you experienced great results by using the product?
If no, have you been exposed to any influences that have lead you to
try whey protein?

CHAPTER V SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

A. Summary of Findings

Many body builders use whey protein because of its benefits and
effectiveness. The risks and effectiveness of using whey protein differ from
any person taking it by their physical characteristics.
Knowing the risks and benefits of whey protein can help you think of
what to avoid and what can it help you for its effects.
B. Conclusion
