Application
Trieur batteries are used for length grading of all granular products (such as cereals,
maize, rice, fine seeds, plastic particles etc.), i.e. they are employed where the grains of a
mixture are of the same thickness and width (e.g. after a screening process), but differ in
length

Width

Design
The trieur batteries are all steel constructions. Depending on their application, the
machines can be used as single-cylinder (cockle or oats cylinder) or dual-cylinder version
consisting of two single-cylinders arranged one above the other (for separation of cockles
and oats). Each single or dual cylinder can be equipped with one or two re-treatment
cylinders.
Mounted on maintenance-free ball bearings, the cylinders consist of 3 or 4 segments of
equal size. Upon request, the cylinder inclination can be adjusted between 0-3. Inside the
cylinder, there is an adjustable collecting trough provided with a discharge screw. Each
cylinder is driven by its own invariable speed geared motor or by a continuously variable
speed reducer motor.
For the possible cylinder combinations, see the flow charts included in this manual

Definition of the term Capacity

The interpretation of the term capacity as applied to seed processing machines leads
frequently to misunderstandings on the part of the user who is inclined to understand by
that term the quantity of good kernels (output capacity) obtained at the machine outlet.
On the other hand, the machine capacity depends to a very great extent on the
composition and type of the material to be cleaned as well as on its separation quality
(higher quality = lower capacity). For this reason, by the term capacity the machine
manufacturer can only indicate the quantity of a certain material (e.g. heavy grain) fed into
the machine.

Mode of operation
Through the inlet hood, the granular material to be graded flows into the interior of the
rotating cylinder whose cover is provided with deep-drawn indents (cavities sometimes
termed trieur cells or pockets). The grains that embed themselves fully into the indents
will be lifted and, after a certain distance, they will drop into the trough (throughs). Those
kernels, however, which are longer than the indent diameter will immediately slide out to
remain in the indent cover (shell).
Shell
Adjustable trough
Shell
Trough

Grading of vetches and cockles

Where spherical weed seeds or broken
grains must be removed e.g. from wheat,
these undesirable additions are lifted into
the trough, whereas the good wheat
kernels, which are too long to embed
themselves into the indents, slide down
the cylinder wall to be dis- charged as
trieur tailings.

HSR schneckgtr eng 032006.doc

Grading of oats and barley

Where oats and similar long additions
have to be removed e.g. from wheat, the
indent size must be such that the wheat
grains are lifted into the trough to be
discharged as the throughs of the trieur
cylinder. The oats grains, which are too
long to sink into the indents, will slide
down the cylinder wall and will be
discharged as the trieur tailings.

Installation of the machine

The trieur battery must be lifted only when attached to the slings at the points provided for
that purpose, i.e. at the ends of the two steel supports sticking out from the machine in the
longitudinal direction.
Do not lift the machine vertically!
Do not use the motor or shaft to lift the cylinder !
Before the machine is fixed, you have to remove the lifting devices and adjust it horizontal.
After that the battery must be tightly bolted to the floor. Before start up the machine,
control the position of the seals in the inlet hood.

Lifting devices of trieurs

Trieur batteries are delivered disassembled. To

ensure the correct erection of the cylinders,
colour marks have been applied. The same
colour has to be positioned one above the
other.

Electrical connection
The geared motors and the main cylinders must be connected with a Soft starter.
Also a suitable motor protection switch must be provided.

The electrical installation may only be carried out by an authorised

professional. The rules and regulations valid for electrical technology,
especially those concerned with safety measures must be observed. The
regulations of the national power supply companies operating in that area
must also be observed

The correct sense of rotation is indicated by an arrow on the change gear box. If the
phases are correctly connected (connection diagram in terminal box) the motor shaft will
turn in the direction of the arrow.

Direction of rotation

For safety reasons, a limit switch will stop the machine the moment the protective cover is
opened. Simultaneously, the material flow must be stopped to avoid overcharging the
cylinder. After closing the protective cover, the machine must be started new.

The motor and the limit switch must be wired to the control cabinet on site.

Settings
The cylinder speed and the angle of inclination of the trough edge are interdependent, i.e.
lowering the trough edge or increasing the speed will have the same effect on the
separation result.
The cylinder speed together with its inclination influence the flow properties of a product
(important for cleaning of rice ect.).

1. Cylinder speed
a) The cylinder takes its drive from a constant-speed parallel shaft geared motor, the
speed being pre-selected depending on the product to be separated
b) The cylinder takes its drive from a variable-speed helical-worm geared motor. Speed
adjustment by hand wheel on geared motor.

Type 1010 - 6010 steplessly adjustable between 12-60 rpm

Type 8010 - 16010 steplessly adjustable between 10-50 rpm
Never adjust the speed if the machine is stopped!

The adjusted speed can be checked on a scale. If there is no speed counter

available, the speed rate can be determined by counting the revolutions per minute
(see marking on cylinder)..

HSR schneckgtr eng 032006.doc

10 / 21

2. Adjustment of trough
The inclination of the trough edge can
be adjusted by a hand wheel. The
angle of the inclination is shown on a
scale.
Effect of trough adjustments:
If the position of the trough edge is
changed (at a constant cylinder speed),
also the separation effect will be
changed.
Raising
of
trough
edge:
less kernels will drop into the trough.
Lowering
the
trough
edge:
more kernels will reach the trough.
3. Cylinder inclination
In the standard machine version, the
cylinder inclination is 0. On request,
this inclination can be steplessly
adjusted between 0-3 (necessary
when grading sluggish materials such
as e.g. rice).

4. Trough edge
Trough edge

The distance between the trough edge

and the cylinder cover can be adjusted
depending on the size of the kernels to
be cleaned.

Information on machine operation

Feeding of material into the machine should be started after only the machine has be
switched on and stopped at least 5 min. before power is removed from the trieur.
For changing the variety to be cleaned ,the machine must be emptied completely by
tilting it with the aid of the hand-wheel.
After changing the position of the trough ,wait for about 2-3 min. until the result of the
trough adjustment can be checked by taking samples.
Apertures enabling grain samples to be taken for checking the cleaning process.

Maintenance, Servicing
The smooth running of all bearings has to be checked every half
year. The supplier guaranties that the bearings are free of
maintenance, but if one of them should loose its smooth running, it
should be changed..

All v-sealing rings have to be tested for leaks every half year. If a vsealing ring should get porous or if cracks should occur it has to be
renewed. We recommend to change the v-sealing ring every two
years..

Gear motors have to be maintained according the manual from the

manufacturer.

Spare Parts

IMPORTANT
It is necessary to keep a record of the serial number of the machine.
When spare parts are ordered, it is essential to quote this number.
We operate a comprehensive recording system of customers and original destinations of all
machines.
Machines can be transferred to other customers and different locations and without the serial
number it is usually not possible to identify a machine if a transfer has been made.
In connection with any query or with any spare part purchase order, we ask you to give the
following information.
