Societal Malpractice

No one chooses to be born, yet all persons alike are plunged into a world with external
expectations and confined systems that dictate how they ought to behave. It is truly breathtaking
to consider that out of the countless sperms that race to fertilize a single egg, only one of them
actually makes it, and had it been another, a completely different person would have been
conceived.

When humanity is viewed from this perspective, the inherent worth that each

individual possesses becomes strikingly evident.

Yet this fundamental piece of biological

information is often overlooked by young and aspiring physicians such as myself. As a result,
many medical students view their ambitions as a mere means of making money without
considering the moral and ethical qualifications required for such a profession. However, unlike
professions concerning accounting and legal practices in which money is the primary concern, an
effective medical student must embody an uncompromising moral standard. Thus, one problem
that I would personally like to solve is medical malpractice. Firstly, misguided notions and
ideologies common to aspiring physicians must be addressed.
The most obvious advantage to becoming a physician is the acquisition of money and
while this immediate gravitation towards economic prosperity is understandable, this perspective
must be met with a balanced understanding. The primary focus for becoming a physician is to
help other people. This perspective allows one to make their decisions based on the needs of
others instead of on the trail of money. More importantly, a physicians primary focus should
also be to use all of their resources to better the lives of others. This means making a difference
outside of the operating room. For instance, a physician who is dedicated to serving their
community might choose to donate a portion of their salary to a local charity. In this way, the

physician utilizes their money as a resource to serve the community instead of a mere tool to
acquire selfish wealth.
Another issue that corrupts the medical industry and may lead to malpractice is
insensitivity. It can be very easy for a doctor to view their career as a monotonous array of
research projects and investigative inquiries on the human body. This kind of thinking could
lead a physician to carry out their work using mere logic and intelligence thus, causing them to
neglect the emotional responsibility necessary to their practice. This behavior is particularly
poisonous to the medical industry since it contradicts what the field of medicine is truly about.
For example, while a certain physician might be treating a cancer patient with chemotherapy,
without the physicians reassuring demeanor and affirmative language, the experts extensive
efforts practically go to waste as they are thus deemed impersonal. Therefore, medical ethics
or simply ethics, is just as if not more important than the embodiment of knowledge needed to
treat various afflictions. Perhaps then, the ideal physician embodies moral excellence in the
operating room as well as in their community, which proves crucial in modern times of
compromised convictions and dwindling moral standards.
In a world that measures success through the means of fame and wealth instead of
through moral strength, numerous medical professionals fall victim to the seductive lies of
monetary gain and the routine nature of their work. Medical malpractice can be witnessed today
in the realm of sports, politics, and world renowned celebrities. However, these destructive
implications about society seem to reach far beyond the medical industry. In this case, perhaps
the more profound problem that I would like to solve is societys corruptive nature and its
influence on government and the public school system in addition to the medical industry.
Similarly, I will embody the solutions to these issues through my own actions. Each person I

educate, each person I listen to, each homeless man or woman I feed, brings that much more love
into a world that is desperate for moral resuscitation.
