To raise private support to enhance the Duluth Public Librarys capacity to
provide programming and materials above the level provided by public
funding, and to champion the Librarys role in meeting community needs.

PR ESIDEN TS M ESSAGE 2016

The year 2015 was a milestone: the librarys 125th anniversary, and the Foundations 25th year! We invited the community to a
grand celebration at The Depot, emceed by Greater Downtown Council President Kristi Stokes. Mayor Don Ness, future mayor
Emily Larson, Chamber of Commerce President David Ross, and author Chris Monroe told their own stories of the difference
the library has made in their lives. The Foundation announced its ambitious goal to raise $100,000 by years end.
In the spring, the Foundation partnered with Miller Hill Mall and JohnsonCarpet One for an unprecedented eight weeks of
childrens literacy programs at the mall. Linda LeGarde Grover was the featured author for One Book Northland. In June, the
library offered Fine Forgiveness, a Foundation-supported initiative that brought as many as 1,000 people back to the library.
Dan DAlliard
Summer brought new opportunities for the Foundation to support the library. Children who signed up for the summer reading
program received a free library t-shirt. Grammy Award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers performed on the librarys outdoor
stage as part of the multi-week Kaleidoscope childrens program, with more than 600 people in attendance each week. Thursday evening
summer concerts returned to the library stage. Food Truck Fridays, spearheaded by the Foundation, drew lunchtime crowds to the library plaza.

In September, 150 guests streamed into the Library for the Foundations 4th annual fundraiser, Learning & Libations at the Library. It was a
delicious and enjoyable evening to learn and mingle in the library.
Most rewardingand most central to our missionwe raised $146,000, 46% more than our goal!
The support of donors like you made all of these good things happen. As you may know, the Foundation and the Friends of the Library provide the
only steady funding for library programming and events. Virtually everything on the librarys busy schedule is made possible by the Foundation
and the Friends organizations. The Foundation annually gives up to 80% of its endowment earnings to the library.
This was also a year of growth for the Foundation. We invested in our organization: we expanded our board of directors,
hired an Executive Director, and employed a consultant to help us increase organizational capacity and raise our profile. In
the midst of this year of transition, we were able, through a combination of endowment earnings, earmarked gifts, and grants,
to contribute more than $56,000 to the library as well as enhance the endowment. Robust communities must have robust
libraries. With your help, all of the Foundations work in 2015 strengthened our library.
With your support, the Foundation will continue to do its part to make the Duluth Public Library a civic and cultural
hub in our community for another 125 years.

STAYS TOGE T H ER
Since 1998, the Casperson family has maintained a family book club. Even as some moved away from
Duluth, the book conversation continued online. The book club not only kept the family connected by
reading and discussing a book each quarter; family members also competed with each other to see
who could read the most book pages each year. The winners name was inscribed on a cup made of
silver. For the first seven years, only one name, June Casperson, who cultivated her childrens love
of reading, appeared on the cup. That cup was retired in 2005, when June became too ill to read.
Since then, a new cup has consistently featured son Chris Caspersons name. June died in 2009.
In 2015, the family book
clubs cumulative
donations to the
Foundation reached
$10,000. The club was
honored by a plaque
mounted on the Andrew
Carnegie section of the
Foundation donor wall in
the downtown library.
This recognition coincided with father
Carl Caspersons 90th birthday.

There are all kinds of book clubs, observed Carl.

But few are centered on a family.

Kelly Casperson, were unable to attend. Photo Bob King/Duluth News Tribune.

A PASSION FOR R E A DING,

FROM GEN ER AT ION TO GEN ER AT ION

Robin Ongaro and granddaughter, Lily Zontelli.

Robin Ongaro believed in enriching childrens

lives through literature. She was a voracious
reader from her earliest days, sneaking a book
under the covers when she was supposed to
be asleep, and she maintained that passion
throughout her life. Robin raised her daughter,
Amy Zontelli, to love books. After her
granddaughter, Lily Zontelli, was born, Robin
was often seen taking Lily to the library or
sitting with Lily in her arms, reading to her. Not
surprisingly, Lily, too, became a reader. The
passion Robin had for books and ideas ignited
a literary passion in the next two generations
of her family.

Robin died in 2012, but her legacy continues. Her husband, Frank Ongaro, and her
friends, including Ann Glumac, created the Robin Ongaro Child Nutrition and Literacy
FoundationRobins Fund, for shortto honor Robins life and exemplify her belief
that it is the sacred responsibility of the community to nurture childrens bodies and
childrens minds. Frank wanted to not just honor her memory but support causes she
was passionate about.
In 2015, Robins Fund gave a generous donation to the Duluth Library Foundation in
Robins memory to benefit childrens and teen literacy. It was a wonderful tribute to
Robin, a bibliophile and vibrant spirit. It embodied a cause that she loved: inspiring
children to read.

M INU T ES OF R E A DING
A DAY!
In 2015, children and
adults flocked to the
Miller Hill Mall for
childrens literacy
events. For eight weeks
in a row, children were
invited to gather and
read with a therapy
dog, draw with an artist,
write with an author,
read and sing with
princes and princesses,
write poetry, read with
Dan Hanger and winner of drawing.
the University of
Minnesota hockey team, and read with a police
officer, then take a tour of his squad carall in the
mall! Each time, kids were encouraged to take a
free book home with them.
The highlight of the events was the grand finale,
emceed by television anchor Dan Hanger. The
children all received free Cat in the Hat hats and
visited seven literacy activity stations. Princes and
princesses sang songs from Frozen. Mayor Don
Ness read to the children. A grand prize drawing
was held. It was a wonderful day.

As the sun was setting on a Saturday evening in September
2015, 150 guests and eight presenters streamed into the
Library for the Foundations 4th annual fundraising event,
Learning & Libations at the Library.
Mayor Don Ness read from and discussed the writing
of his political memoir; Emily Vikre explained what drew
her and her husband Joel from the East Coast to Duluth
to distill spirits; Jerry Fryberger opened our eyes to the
dazzling economic engine that is the Port of Duluth and
Superior; and George Killough shared the history of
and 20th century gossip aboutauthor Sinclair Lewis,
who briefly made Duluth his home. Dr. David Sproat
considered American perspectives about death; Mick
Dodds demonstrated the tools and techniques for ski
waxing; Jill Forte proved that well-chosen ingredients
make for delicious dishes; and David Devere shared the
secrets of wine tasting.

We hope you will join us in 2016!

David Devere

The Foundation honored Frank Ongaro of Robins Fund,

Ryanne Battaglia of Members Cooperative Credit Union,
and Karen and Royal Alworth for their generous gifts on
the 125th anniversary of the library.
