WORKING METHODOLOGY FOR BITUMINOUS WORKS

Otta Seal and Bituminous works:Bitumen will be purchased from Nepal bitumen Barrel. Otta seal aggregates will be
produced by crusher plant at chainage 24+350. The bitumen will be carried in bulk
quantity & stored in the proper place at Anarkholi camp.
We will carry out all the associates' test of bitumen & Otta seal aggregates prior to use
and get approval from Material Engineer. The bitumen storage area & heating station
will be kept neat & tidy at Anarkholi camp. We have started producing 16 mm down
Otta seal aggregates & stockpiled in acceptable quantity at Anarkholi camp for further
use at site.Some of them are in under approval processing. Suitability test and
production control test are being conducted. In this way, the approved stockpiled
aggregates will be transported at site, where sufficient areas are available. Before
carrying out Otta seal and sand seal works, notification of possible road closure to
concerned authorities like CDO, Police, Transport etc at Dadeldhura and Baitadi will
be done. In the mean time, we will arrange for equipments as listed below.

We will start cleaning the approved surface of sub-base area with the help of
compressor and 40 nos. of labors. We will clean the existing surface containing dust,
dirt, cow dung, if found any. The calibration of bitumen distributor will be carried out
in presence of Material Engineer. After its approval, the bituminous binder shall be
heated in boilers as per specification. Kerosene will be mixed as instructed by the
Engineer. We will carry out site trials as instructed by the Engineer (minimum 2 trials
of 100 m sections) for executing the works. After approval of trials, we will continue
the bituminous works on approved surface at specified rate as per the contract
document or as instructed by the Engineer. Temperature of spraying bitumen will be
135 165 degree centigrade as per the requirement. Then Otta seal aggregates will
spread by chip spreader. The rolling will be started immediately after chippings have
been spread on the sealed surface by pneumatic tyred roller not less than 15 passes, in
no case later than two minutes, after the application of binder. Rolling will be
continuing until all chippings are firmly embedded into the binder and until all excess
chippings have been removed. During the Otta seal woks we will stop the public
vehicle during spraying of hot bitumen & chips as per site condition. The stretch of
Otta seal area will be prohibited by erection of temporary traffic restriction sign,
barriers and flagmen to control speed limits of vehicle. The traffic will be opened as

soon as the Otta seal aggregate is spread. The entire sealed area will be rolled further
minimum of 15 passes during the following two days.
Sand seal
For sand seal, the Otta Seal surfaced area shall be broomed free of dust & loose stones
or other foreign material by Air compressor. The specified binder will be applied at
approved application rate instructed by the Engineer in the clean surface area where
the surface of Otta layer. Then the sand will be sprayed on it and it will be rolled not
less than 15 passes of pneumatic roller. The traffic will be control as mentioned
above. The spread sand dislodged by traffic shall be broomed back to wheel track for
2 to 3 weeks
