College Union Inaugural function was on 11th November.


Prof.Dr. M.J.John, Principal inaugurated the function.
Mr.E.A.Subramanian, Finance Controller gave the message of the day.
Prof. Dr. Madhavi Ramachandran, Prof. Dr. Satish .G.Prabhu, Prof.
Dr.Raju Antony, Vice-Principals felicitated the new College Union
Chairman & members.
Mr. Asheed Menon, Former Chairman gave Valedictory
speech & handed over his charge to the new Chair man Mr. Afsal
Ummer. Our new Chairman, thanked his colleagues for having electing
him as the chairman, and requested their co-operation for the effective
functioning of the Union. This was followed by the cultural event
Tejesvi which brought out the hidden talents of our budding doctors.

The family of SNIMS takes pride in welcoming our staff


members, Smt .Sheeba Kuttan & Smt. Sheeja Shaji who were newly
elected as Kunnukara Gram Panchayat members in the recent elections
held . In this function, Mr. R.M.Dhathan, Manager, Hospital
Administration welcomed the gathering. Prof.Dr. M.J.John, Principal
presided over the meeting and awarded mementoes to Smt .Sheeba
Kuttan & Smt. Sheeja Shaji. Mr.E.A.Subramanian, Finance Controller
gave the message of the day. Prof. Dr. Madhavi Ramachandran, Prof.
Dr. Satish .G.Prabhu, Vice-Principals & Col. (Retd) Dr.Tomy
Varghese, Medical Superintendent felicitated the new members of
Kunnukara Gram Panchayat.

Anti-ragging Awareness Programme.

International Conference on Snake Bite

On 3rd November our 2012, 2013 & 2015 batch medical


students had an awareness class on legal matters.

Narayanan, Hon .Dist. & Sessions Judge and Chairman of Taluk Legal
Services Committee, N.Paravur inaugurated the function. Our
Principal Prof.Dr M.J.John presided over the function. Mr. A.V.
Subramanian, Finance Controller felicitated. Prof.Dr. Madhavi
Ramachandran, Vice-Principal extended vote of thanks.

The Legal Service Cell aims at providing Justice to all &


settling every dispute as per law and accordingly Ignorance of law is
not an excuse. Advocates Shri Padmaraj & Shri.K.K.Vivekanandan
spoke on the different aspects of laws related to Medical Ethics,
Medical Education and laws to curb the practice of Ragging.

Hospital Activities
Medical camps & Awareness Classes

SNIMS with L.F.Hospital , Angamaly jointly arranged an


International Conference on Snake Bite at Kochi International Airport
Convention Centre on 21st &22nd November 2015.Haematologists
&Physicians from Asian countries & various parts of India
participated in the event. It is alarming that more than 50000 people die
due to snake bite in India per year. Still this is not given due importance
and there is no National Programme for control of Snake Bite in India.

National Children's Day Celebrations.


SNIMS observed Children's Day under patronage of Dept. of
Paediatrics. Drawing & Painting Competition for Children of age 4-9
years was conducted at the College Auditorium on 14-11-2015 at 9.30
am.

Principal Prof.Dr M.J.John inaugurated the function. Mr. A.


V. Subramanian, Finance Controller felicitated at the occasion quoting
ideal poems for the occasion. About 100 children participated in the
competition. It was nice to see some children dressed like Chachaji. All
children were given prizes.

Revised Basic Course & ATCOM


Prof Dr.Satheesh .G.Prabhu & Prof Dr Raju Antony, Vice
Principals attended the Revised Basic Course & ATCOM at Govt
Medical College ,Kottayam on 18-21/11/2015.

RNTCP-Zonal Task Force meeting

At Munambam on 8-11-2015. SNIMS arranged a medical


camp at Velankanny Matha School Hall, Munambam. Dr Sreejitha
from Dept of Medicine &Dr. Suhail from Paediatrics & four interns of
SNIMS Hospital examined about 500people and majority were
children. Free Medicines were distributed to 254 patients.Prof Dr Raju
Antony, Vice-Principal & HOD, Dept of Community Medicine led the
awareness session on Life style Diseases.

On 23, 24th November at Hotel Udaya Samudra, Kovalam.


Dr.Hemalatha, Asst.Prof. Dept of T.B. &Chest Diseases &
Dr.P.Golalakrishnan, Associate Prof., Dept of Community Medicine
represented SNIMS at the meeting. Among the Global Burden of
Tuberculosis 23% is shared by India. The socio economic factors & its
impact on the development of Tuberculosis was high- lighted at the
meeting. Tuberculosis still continues to be a social disease with
medical aspects.

01/11/2015.on First Aid.

At Kizhakkepram on 22-11-2015

SNIMS jointly with Prathyasha Pain & Palliative Care Centre


,Paravur arranged a Mini Executive Health Check up & Awareness
Class at the Kizhekkepram IMA Hall .Doctors from Dept of General
Medicine participated in the Camp. There were facilities of medical
check up, lab check up & vision checking at the camp.Free medicines
were distributed to more than 80 patients.

SNIMS jointly with Thiruonam Residents Association


arranged awareness class at Mahilapadi Anganwadi Hall,
Kaitharam,N.Paravr to the members of the Residents Association. The
programme was inaugurated by Adv. V.D.Satheesan, M.L.A of
Paravur.Dr MP Krishnan Nair of Dept of Community Medicine,
SNIMS led the session. The class was part of the anniversary
celebrations of this residents Association.

Academic meeting at SNIMS

14/11/2015- on "Problems of the Elderly".

On 12-11-2015, By the Dept. Of Pathology. Dr. Shweta Jose,


Asst. Prof spoke on the subject Diagnostic Approach to a case of
Thrombocytopenia . Prof.Dr.B.Sumangala, Prof & HOD, Dept. Of
Pathology chaired the session and this was followed by an active
interactive session.

SNIMS jointly with Kuttipuzha kovattu residents association


organised a meeting of Elderly Sayam Sandhya at the Kuttipuzha
NSS Hall.Mr. P.Rajeev, President of the association presided over the
function .About 45 Senior citizens were present and they were
honoured at this occasion.

Dr Krishnan Nair of SNIMS presented the topic. Mr.


Satheesh Chandran Nair, Senior Health Inspector of SNIMS recited a
poem related to aging. Ms Molykutty Sebastian, JPHN of PHC,
Kunnukara demonstrated the importance of including fresh
vegetables in the diet of elderly, by preparing & serving a vegetable
salad to these elders.

SNIMS participates in WHO external monitoring of Indradhanush
Mission.

Important Health Events observed at SNIMS


14th November-World Diabetes Day
Theme- 2014-2016: Healthy living starts at breakfast
The theme of World Diabetes Day, from 2014 to 2016 will be
healthy living and diabetes and this year, there's a focus on starting each
day right by having a healthy breakfast. A healthy breakfast should help
blood sugar levels from getting too high and should keep you full
through the morning. Whilst cereal and toast may be cheap, these
options typically raise blood sugar levels rapidly and may leave you
hungry again before lunch .
SNIMS had special OP for Diabetic check-up at Medical OP on the
day.

World AIDS Day on 1st December

Dr.Saira, Surveillance Medical Officer of the Mission led an


Orientation Programme for Faculties & Interns of Dept. of Community
Medicine on 6-11-2015 at SNIMS. Interns had field training in WHO
External Monitoring of Mission Indradhanush by participating in the
Field Survey during 7-18th November, 2015.The Survey was to find
out partly and unimmunised children of age groups 0-2 and 2-5 years.
They had surveyed at Moothakunnam, Karimaalur, Alanghad,
Varapuzha, Nedumbhassery, & Panaikulam. 125 children of age group
0 to 2 years were surveyed, of which 5 were unimmunised and 3 were
partly immunised. Of the 3 partly immunised 2 were migrants. They
will be brought under the Mission Indradhanush total Immunisation
Drive .There was a review meeting of the results of the survey at
SNIMS on 18-11-2015, in which Dr Saira and our Interns analysed the
survey data and draft report was prepared.
This survey is planned to be continued in December 2015 and January
2016 at different localities of Ernakulam district.

Every year World AIDS Day events take place across the
country to raise awareness and show support for people living with
HIV. Getting to Zero is the theme selected by the World AIDS
Campaign (WAC) to commemorate World AIDS Day on 1st December.
The new theme, that will be used until 2015, echoes the UNAIDS
vision of achieving Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination.
Zero AIDS-related deaths.
SNIMS observed the day with various programmes from 28th
November extending to 3rd December 2015 .
Quiz & debate program
We, conducted Quiz & debate program on 28/11/2015.Interns
Dr Anjana K S, Dr. Gifty Zacharias, Dr.Farzana& Dr.Nikhila organised
the Quiz. Medical students of 2012 &2013 batches (Krishna Prasad,
Vivek Vijayan, Mariet Joseph, Jincy, Emmanuel Paul, Ashima R
Chandran, Anusha Renjith, Aishwarya, Aqueel Usman, Pritish Pratap,
Ajith Thankachan, Abi Antony A.L)
participated. The topic for
Debate was creating an AIDS free generation an achievable goal?

Visit to the Old age home

A team of doctors & staff Professor Dr Swati Patki, Dr. Ann


Mary, Asst. Prof & Mr.Satheesh Chandran Nair, Senior Health
Inspector with our medical students visited the Old Age Home
Nirmalabhavan at Karumalloor: . Medical checkup was done for
those inmates who presented with various symptoms . The medical
students distributed eatables and interacted with them. This interaction
relived the mental agony of the inmates and the students in turn
learned the medical and social problems of the aged.

Poster making competition


The Interns & medical students of 2012 & 2013 batches had a
poster making competition on the topic, 'stigma related to AIDS' on
30-11-2015.

Campus sights
SNIMS participates in UNEP & Swachbharath Programme's
Greening Activities.
Miss Susmitha Joshi, Medical student of 2012 batch got the
1st prize in poster making competition.
SNIMS plans to conduct Awareness Class for the local
residents at PHC Kunnukara, a Rally from Chalakka Junction to
SNIMS in which the Doctors, staff & students of SNIMS will be
participating,
skit & awareness class on AIDS, the Thursday
Academic meeting with the departments of General Medicine,
Paediatrics, Gynaecology & Community Medicine presenting the
current scenario of AIDS.
As part of Campus Beautification activities, our
Engineering wing, landscaped the Courtyard in front of Dept. Of
Physiology using Tiger Grass & graded pebbles by our talented
Gardner Mr.Shaffi.

Other Important Health Events in November


National Cancer Awareness Day on November 7
National Cancer Awareness Day was observed across the country on
November 7." It is high time we went into combative mode against this
disease."

12th November-World Pneumonia Day.


Theme-Fight Pneumonia; Save a child.

World Pneumonia Day brings people from all over the world
together uniting to demand that something be done to fight the
pneumonia illness.In 2013 alone, more than 900,000 children died
from this preventable and treatable illness, accounting for 15% of
under-five child mortality worldwide, 2% of which are newborns
UNICEF..

National Epilepsy Day- November 17


In India, National Epilepsy Day is observed annually on
November 17, to create awareness about the spread of epilepsy in the
country. 'Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects about 50
million of the population worldwide. One out of every 100 to 200
people in India, suffer from epilepsy.'

Lung Cancer Awareness Month-November.


November is officially Lung Cancer Awareness Month. This
all started as Lung Cancer Awareness Day. As the lung cancer
community and the lung cancer movement grew, the awareness
activities increased and grew into Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
Health Tit-Bits
Quarantine Station inaugurated at Kochi Airport.
South India's first health and quarantine station was
commissioned at Air port, Kochi by The Director General of Health
Services Dr. Jagdish Prasad. The Centre for vaccination against Yellow
Fever will commence operating at this station soon. The facility had
been set up in the wake of fears of spread of yellow fever, which is not
present in India at present. Passengers who are suspected to be
harbouring the virus of the disease will be kept under observation at the
station (quarantine). Up to now, such passengers were sent to Delhi for
observation. Since January 2015, 27 passengers without proper
vaccination documents, coming from 13 South American and 33
African Countries where Yellow Fever is endemic were sent to Delhi
for observation

World COPD Day 2015 will take place on Wednesday,
November 18 around the theme It's Not Too Late. This positive
message was chosen to emphasize the meaningful actions people can
take to improve their respiratory health, at any stage before or after a
COPD diagnosis. If you care for people with COPD, it's not too late to
help your patients breathe better.

World Toilet Day November 19th.


2.4 billion People do not have adequate sanitation. 1 billion
people still defecate in the open. Poor sanitation increases the risk of
disease and malnutrition, especially for women and children. Women
and girls risk rape and abuse, because they have no toilet that offers
privacy.This year, World Toilet Day is focusing on the link between
sanitation and nutrition, drawing the world's attention to the
importance of toilets in supporting better nutrition and improved
health.

Anti-Obesity Day: November 26, 2015Anti-Obesity Day is an international observance held on


November 26. The event aims to raise awareness of obesity as a public
health hazard. World Health Organization formally recognized obesity
as a global epidemic. Obesity rates are raising most dramatically in
urban settings.. The campaign focused on promoting the development
of good lifestyle habits to prevent obesity and stay fit and healthy. AntiObesity Day events include mass counselling sessions, health camps,
talk shows with leading health experts, media campaigns, educational
events etc.

National Newborn Week from 15-21st November 2015


Every year in India 1.2 million infants die before completing
their first four weeks of life. There is a lot of work to be done in
improving newborn health in India .If care givers, parents,
government and private sector, and non governmental agencies work
together; this death rate can be reduced considerably .
