Institute for Scientific Information (founded in 1960)

now is part of Thomson Reuters

ISI offers bibliographic database services: citation indexing and

analysis covering thousands of academic journals, including
- Science Citation Index (SCI) :

6,639 journals (approx)

- Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI):

2,474 journals (approx)

- Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI): 1,700 journals (approx)

Web of Science database is now a collection of cross-searchable

databases:

Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED)

Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)
Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI)
Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Science (CPCI-S)
Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Social Sciences &
Humanities (CPCI-SSH)
Book Citation Index - Science (BKCI-S)
Book Citation Index - Social Sciences & Humanities (BKCI-SSH)
.

- Available via ISI's Web of Science database allows

researcher to identify which articles have been cited most
frequently etc.
Annual Journal Citation Reports list an impact factor
for each of journal it tracks

Impact Factor

Example

Lotz et al.
is citing a paper of
Lilly et al.

5/29/2015

Impact Factor
Measures how often articles in a specific journal have been cited
Journal Citation Report (JCR)
The total number of quotes during a year of the two immediately
preceding years' issues
e.g., quotations in 2009 of the journals published in 2008 and 2007 are weighed
against the number of articles published in 2008 and 2007 in that journal
Impact Factor, IF =
Number of citations in current year to items published in the two previous years
Total number of articles & reviews published in the two previous years

Impact Factor is for a journal, NOT FOR A PAPER

5/29/2015

To find out Impact Factor of a journal in 2009

Impact Factor to
be determined for
this year

Journals are published regularly: 2009

2008
2007
2006

These two years

are considered

2005
...

A. Cites in 2009 to items published in: 2008 = 423

2007 = 755
Sum: 1178
IF = Cites to recent items
Number of recent items

B. Published in: 2008 = 164

2007 = 235
Sum: 399

1178 = 2.952
399

Subject Variation in Impact Factors

(Amin & Mabe, 2007)

Significant variation in mean impact

according to subject area
Top journal in one field may have a lower
impact than bottom journal in another field.
Comparisons should only be made within the same subject areas

Document Type

Letters: Rapidly climbs to citation peak, large proportion of cites in 2 year window but low absolute
number
Full Papers: Later citation peak, smaller proportion in 2 year window, but greater
longevity
Reviews: Latest citation peak of three document types, and greatest longevity. Proportion of cites
within impact window is low - but high absolute number of cites
IMPACT FACTORS: USE AND ABUSE M. Amin & M. Mabe Elsevier, 2000

The Cited Half-Life

A measure of rate of decline of the citation curve
i.e. article longevity
The number of years that the total citations (i.e. citations to
articles from all years, rather than only the previous two years)
takes to decline to 50% of its value

Citations

No evidence that the cited half-life is correlated with IF

h-Index

15

5/29/2015

h-Index
for Evaluating Authors
Proposed by JE Hirsch quantify an individual's scientific
research output
Assessment of both quantity (number of papers) and quality
(impact, or citations to these papers)
h-index is automatically calculated:
Web of Science
Scopus
Publish or Perish (free download), based on data in Google Scholar

h-index calculated based on number of papers authored and

number of times each paper has been cited
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-index

h-Index values
JE Hirsch:
Based on typical h .. values found, I suggest (with large error bars)
that for faculty at major research universities, h 12 might be a
typical value for advancement to tenure (associate professor) and
that h 18 might be a typical value for advancement to full
professor. Fellowship in the American Physical Society might occur
typically for h 1520. Membership in the National Academy of
Sciences of the United States of America may typically be
associated with h 45 and higher, except in exceptional
circumstances.
As with other metrics, its best to compare h-index values within a
discipline.

Determining h-index Manually

A scientist has index h if h of his/her Np papers have at
least h citations each, and the other (Np h) papers have no
more than h citations each.

Use of Mendeley software

A1. Mendeley software
Initial activities

Usages/Benefits

Registration

After completing registration, automatically it will

create a library for you to store your documents.

Profile creation
Uploading documents
Joining to group

You can access from anywhere through your

browser. Mendeley software is a combination of a
desktop application and a website which helps you
manage, share and discover both content and
contacts in research.
Mendeley Desktop will also allow you to visit
hundreds of research field and researchers library.

http://www.mendeley.com/

Use of Mendeley software

Use of Mendeley software
This research network will allow you to keep track of your colleagues'
publications, conference participations, awards etc. and helps you
discover people with research interests similar to yours.
You can upload your own publications to your research profiles, then
track the evolution of your readership. How often are your papers
downloaded? How often are they read?

But, in this case, there is exception for giving free access of some
irreverent things such as peer-reviewed research, work of hire etc.
Please read details for this. You can change the privacy level of your
profile in your privacy setting.

Use of Mendeley software

Use of Mendeley software
This also lets you filter your library by authors, journals or keywords.
You can use document collections, notes and tags to organize your
knowledge, and export the document details in different citation styles.

Sharing and synchronisation of your library (or parts of it) with selected
colleagues can also be done.

It is perfect for jointly managing all the papers in your lab!

To collaborate with your colleagues either publicly or in private, this is an

easy way.
