What are the Main Tasks of a Biomedical Electronics Technician?

Design and deliver technology to assist people with disabilities.

Design and develop medical diagnostic and clinical instrumentation, equipment, and procedures,
using the principles of engineering and biobehavioral sciences.

Conduct research, along with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists, on the engineering
aspects of the biological systems of humans and animals.

Advise and assist in the application of instrumentation in clinical environments.


Develop new applications for energy sources, such as using nuclear power for biomedical
implants.

Install, adjust, maintain, repair, or provide technical support for biomedical equipment.

Keep documentation of service histories on all biomedical equipment.

Analyze new medical procedures to forecast likely outcomes.

Evaluate the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of biomedical equipment.

Conduct training or in-services to educate clinicians and other personnel on proper use of
equipment.

Research new materials to be used for products, such as implanted artificial organs.

Teach biomedical engineering or disseminate knowledge about field through writing or consulting.

Adapt or design computer hardware or software for medical science uses.

Write documents describing protocols, policies, standards for use, maintenance, and repair of
medical equipment.
Diagnose and interpret bioelectric data, using signal processing techniques.
Develop models or computer simulations of human biobehavioral systems to obtain data for
measuring or controlling life processes.

Advise hospital administrators on the planning, acquisition, and use of medical equipment.

Manage team of engineers by creating schedules, tracking inventory, creating and using budgets,
and overseeing contract obligations and deadlines.

Conduct preventative maintenance on equipment.


1) Repairs, calibrates, and maintains medical equipment instrumentation used in health-care delivery field
2) Inspects and installs medical & related technical equipment in medical research facilities for use by
physicians, nurses, scientists, or engineers involved in researching, monitoring, diagnosing and treating
physical ailments or dysfunctions
3) Services various equipment & apparatus, like patient monitors, electrocardiographs, blood-gas analyzers,
x-ray units, defibrillators, electrosurgical units, anesthesia apparatus, pacemakers, blood-pressure
transducers, spirometers, sterilizers, diathermy equipment, in-house television systems, patient-care
computers, other related technical paraphernalia

4) Repairs, calibrates, and maintains equipment, using handtools, power tools, measuring devices, and
knowledge of manufacturers manuals, troubleshooting techniques, and preventive-maintenance schedules
5) Safety-tests medical equipment and health-care facilitys structural environment to make sure patient staff
safety from electrical or mechanical hazards
6) Consults with medical or research staff to ascertain that equipment functions properly and safely, utilizing
knowledge of electronics, medical terminology, human anatomy physiology, chemistry, and physics
7) May demonstrate explain correct operation of equipment to medical personnel
8) May modify or develop instruments or devices, under supervision of medical or engineering staff
9) May work as salesperson or service technician for equipment manufacturers or their sales
representatives.
