Q.2
Electrical Supply Quality Analyzers

Electrical Supply Quality

Electrical supply quality encompasses parameters on the development of voltage delivered to customers. These parameters
(voltage amplitude, icker, harmonics, unbalance) describe the voltage waveform and offer very important information about
the efciency of the electrical installation being analyzed.
A poor electrical supply may affect the electrical installations in very different ways and may cause signicant problems in
the installation and in the connected electrical equipment
There are currently a whole series of standards and decrees dening not only minimum levels of electrical supply quality
but also how to measure these parameters.

Events
These are voltage variations which affect the effective value of the half cycle of the voltage wave. According to this value,
compared as a percentage to the declared nominal voltage at the point of measurement, events are classied in the
following way:
Interruptions:
Voltage event where the effective value is below 10 % (or 1 % according to criteria used) of the declared nominal
voltage.
Dips:
Events with values between 90 % and 10 % (or 1 % according to criteria used) of UDIN
Dips are drops in voltage caused by the variation of the systems impedance due to protective devices operating and
usually last between 10 ms and 1 min.
Overvoltages:
A phenomenon where the voltage increases above 110 % of the declared voltage (107 % according to criteria used). These
are classied as temporary (when the duration is relatively long) or transient (when the duration is a few milliseconds).
Overvoltage
Dips

Interruptions

IEC 61000-4-30
This Standard describes the measurement method which must be used in equipment measuring the quality of electrical
supply. This Standard differentiates two classes of equipment:
Class A equipment. For contractual applications, resolving disputes or to be used as a reference.
Class B equipment. For obtaining data for internal use where a high degree of accuracy is not required.
It is vital that electrical supply quality equipment measures in accordance with this Standard (specifying the class), because
it ensures the correct accumulation of results.

Q.2

Q.2
harmonics

Electrical Supply Quality Analyzers

Disturbance which affects the waveform.

Generally, harmonics found in the system have relatively low frequencies and are
usually responsible for transformers and distribution lines overheating. They are
also responsible for originating high currents and losses in the neutral in some
installations, overcurrent trips in some protective devices and differential relay trips,
etc.

Flicker
This is periodical voltage amplitude disturbance which has
direct repercussions on incandescent light uctuations. This
effect causes visual annoyance and produces tiredness if the
phenomenon is permanent.
This perception value has to be measured objectively (Pst). In
many quality standards, (EN50160), Pst < 1 is admissible and
not damaging.

Electrical Supply Quality Analyzers

QNA 400 Series

The QNA 400 Series are premier electrical supply quality
analyzers which measure and record any event that occurs
on an electricity system. They have been specically designed
to take highly accurate measurements in HV / MV / LV
systems, to be located in transformation centers or placed
in any company using the same boards for installing meters.
The 400 Series analyzers are certied with the IEC-61000-4-30
European Standards, which species the measurement methods
which must be used by equipment measuring electrical supply.
The 400 Series equipment is classied as class A, under the
different classications in this Standard.

Measurement and recording

The memory is divided into les in order to ensure the recording of all information.
Data for each recording period is stored in each le.
*.STD: Periodic recording, congurable up to 200 electrical parameters. The
default period is 10 min
*.H24: Statistics for voltage harmonics in the component for 24 h
*.STP: Weekly statistics for writing quality reports according to EN-50160
*.EVQ: Recording all voltage events and corresponding changes to the RMS value
during the event
*.EVE: Equipment incidents, time changes, disconnection from power supply
failure, incorrect passwords
The memory is exible with this intelligent scheme accepting more than 75 days in
4 MB of memory.

Communications
The equipment has two ports allowing the following communications combinations.
According to: RS232/RS485 or GSM/RS232.

RS-232
RS-232 Communication. Direct connection to the equipment over short distances.

RS-485

RS-485 Communication. Allows the equipment to be connected within an internal

multi-point network with more associated peripherals with one single PC managing
everything
GSM Communication. (GSM types only). Communication is established through
a telephone call as though it were calling a mobile telephone. This type of
communication is ideal for those installations with difcult access because it avoids
having a communications cable from the equipment to the PC. GSM QNA 400 Series
analyzers include a GSM MODEM which reduces the space required for installing the
equipment and increases the degree of electrical protection for the MODEM since it
is protected by the equipment itself.

GSM
GPRS
Ethernet

GPRS Communication (GPRS only). This type of communication is ideal for those
companies with a PC operating as a server and who do not want to use modems
to download information. Only the Internet address where the information is to be
downloaded needs to be indicated to communicate via GPRS. GPRS communication
allows the downloading of information at high speeds and in the most economical
way. GPRS equipment allows data to be sent as GSM.
QNA 400 Series analyzers use the following communications protocols:

SMS

CIRBUS: to question the equipment

ZMODEM: to download les

Discharge protection
Protection against unforeseen discharges plus radiated and conducted electromagnetic emissions (EMI).

Q.2
Electrical Supply Quality Analyzers

POWERVISION Software
Power Vision is software for the remote measurement and
management of information recorded by the QNA electrical
supply quality analyzers.
It is a high performance tool which raises the power of information
recorded by the equipment.
Power Vision allows both expert and rst time users to obtain
maximum performance quickly and easily.
More specically, it is a high powered, exible and simple tool.

software benets
Real time display of all electrical parameters
Connection with many pieces of equipment either remotely or on site
Automatic le download (partial, grouped by week / months, totals)
Draws up graphs and lists of all variables
Automatic calculation of les applying the EN-50160 Standard or other dened by the user
Exportation of information in .txt les

Q.2
Communications

Electrical Supply Quality Analyzers

This part of the program allows the user to set the equipment on site (RS-232) or remotely (RS-485, RTC MODEM, GSM,
ETHERNET), and to also display in real time information measured by the equipment and to automatically download it,
indicating when (day and time) the download is to take place.
Automatically downloading the information allows the user to decide which les are to be downloaded and when they are
to be downloaded. In this way, no time is lost when connecting one or more pieces of equipment, because the program
automatically downloads information from as many pieces of equipment as required by the user.

Real time display

Automatic le download

Information Management
Power Vision obtains the best performance from the information, drawing up graphs and lists from more than 200 variables,
exporting them to text les (.txt) for subsequent use with other applications, including directly applying quality standards to
determine if the voltage supplied complies or not with the current standards.

Protector DIN RTC

The DIN-RTC protector is a device designed to protect communication systems
carrying analogue signals on paired wire.
The protector is used for both voice transmitting equipment protection and for
industrial control equipment such as energy meters (remote readings).
The protector allows overvoltages from the communication cable attacking the
equipment to be earthed, both between signal lines (differential mode) and
between lines and PE (common mode), offering a high degree of protection to the
installation.

TCP2RS, RS-232 / 485 - Ethernet Converter

The TCP2RS converter converts an RS-232 or RS-485 signal to an Ethernet line.
Ideal for applications with an Ethernet network (base 10 / 100) and which does not
have an RS-232 or RS-485 series communications bus. The main advantage of this
converter is that it displays all possible data on any PC with Intranet connection.
