After States' Reorganisation
A F T E R the r e o r g a n i s a t i o n effected
on the first of this m o n t h , the
I n d i a n U n i o n is composed of 14
States a n d six c e n t r a l l y administered
t e r r i t o r i e s ; 98 per cent of the t o t a l
p o p u l a t i o n are covered by the States
a n d about t w o per cent by the t e r r i tories, J a m m u ad K a s h m i r is one
of the 14 States,
Of the f o r m e r P a r t A States.
A s s a m , Orissa a n d U t t a r P t a d e s h
r e m a i n unaffected,
Of the seven
Part
B
States.
H y d e r a b a d has disappeared f r o m the
m a p ; Telengana has gone to A n d h r a .
the M a r a t h i and Canarese speaking
d i s t r i c t s of the State h a v e gone to
B o m b a y and M y s o r e respectively. So
has Madhya.
Bharat
w h i c h has
been, i n t e g r a t e d w i t h M a d h y a P r a desh, S a u r a s h t r a w h i c h has gone to
B o m b a y and P E P S U w h i c h is now
one with P u n j a b .
The r e m a i n i n g
Bart B States, Mysore, Rajas t h a n
and
Kerala ( former TravancoreCochin ) are now full fledged States
equal in s t a t u s w i t h the o t h e r
States.
Of the P a r t C States, f o u r viz
D e l h i . H i m a c h a l Pradesh, M a n i p u r
and T r i p u r a are n o w c e n t r a l l y a d ministered territories,
along with
Andaman-Nicobar
and L a c e a d i v e A r n i n d i v i g r o u p of I s l a n d s .
Bhopal
and V i n d h y a Pradesh have been
joined w i t h M a d h y a Pradesh. K u t e h
has been merged w i t h B o m b a y , C o o r g
w i t h Mysore and A j m e r w i t h R a j a s than .
T h e area and population ( a c c o r d i n g to the 1951 Census) of the reorganised States are as f o l l o w s :

(1) Andhra
L a n g u a g e : T e l u g u , w h i c h has the
largest n u m b e r o f speakers i n I n d i a
after Hindi.
P o p u l a t i o n : Increased
f r o m 25.5 mn to 31.3 m n .
A r e a has
increased by 42,355 sq miles f r o m
63,608 sq miles to 105,963 sq miles.
I t i s the f i f t h l a r g e s t State i n area
a n d r a n k s f o u r t h i n respect o f popul a t i o n . T h e e n t i r e increase in area
is due to the a d d i t i o n of the Teleng a n a d i s t r i c t s (42,355 sq mites) of
Hyderabad,

(2) Assam
P r e d o m i n a n t l a n g u a g e ; Assamese,
t h o u g h the percentage of population
s p e a k i n g the d o m i n a n t language is
lowest i n A s s a m compared t o a n y
o t h e r State.
A s s a m has n o t been
affected by r e o r g a n i s a t i o n .

Population: 9 mn.
A r e a : 85,012
sq m i l e s ! R a n k s seventh in area and
13th in p o p u l a t i o n .

(3) Bihar
L a n g u a g e : H i n d i . W i t h the t r a n s f e r to W e s t Bengal of 3,030 sq miles
o f P u r n e a district a n d P u r u l i a subd i v i s i o n , t h e State's population a n d
area have declined f r o m 40.2 mn
to 38.82 mn a n d 70,330 sq miles to
67,300 sq miles respectively. In area
i t r a n k s n i n t h w h i l e i n population i t
comes t h i r d ,

(4) Bombay
The m a j o r b i l i n g u a l State in the
Indian Union (Punjab is another),
the t w o m a i n language groups being
M a r a t h i (26 m n speakers) and G u j a r a t i (10 mn speakers). The populat i o n of the State has doubled, f r o m
24.8 mn to 48 m n . Simultaneously
its area has increased by 79,480
sq miles f r o m 111,434 sq miles
to
190,919
sq
miles.
Before
r e o r g a n i s a t i o n , the State h a d 32 dis
t.ricts of w h i c h B o m b a y Deccan
(Southern) c o m p r i s i n g of three dist r i c t s w i t h an area of 15,978 sq
miles and a n o t h e r d i s t r i c t ( K a n a r a ;
area 4.000 sq m i l e s ) were t r a n s f e r red to M y s o r e . T h e g a i n in size is
accounted for by the i n c o r p o r a t i o n
of V i d a r b h a ( a r e a : 36,678 sq miles)
of M a d h y a Pradesh a n d of the
M a r a t h a w a d a d i s t r i c t s ( a r e a : 25,511
sq miles) of t h e H y d e r a b a d State
a n d t h e States o f S a u r a s h t r a a n d
K u t c h ( a r e a : 21.451 a n d 16.724 sq
miles respectively).
In area, B o m b a y is the largest
State i n the I n d i a n U n i o n a n d i n
population it is second only to U t t a r
Pradesh.

(5) Kerala
L a n g u a g e : M a l a y a l a m . T h e popul a t i o n o f t h i s State f o r m e r T r a v a n core-Cochin)
has
a l m o s t doubled
f r o m 7.8 mn before r e o r g a n i s a t i o n
to 13.55 m n .
There has also been
a corresponding increase in its area
w h i c h is n o w 15.035 sq mites as
a g a i n s t 8,846 sq miles before N o v ember 1.
Despite" the increase in
i t s area by 6,189 sq miles K e r a l a
is the smallest of the fourteen r e c o n s t i t u t e d States. I t r a n k s t w e l f t h
in population.
The State is composed of the f o r mer
State
of
Travancore-Cochin
(minus four taluks of Trivandrum
d i s t r i c t s a n d a p a r t of the Shencottah T a l u k in the Quilon District),

M a l a b a r d i s t r i c t ( w i t h o u t LaeeadiveM i n i c o y I s l a n d s w h i c h a r e now a
centrally administered t e r r i t o r y ) and
the K e s a r g o d T a l u k of South K a n a r a
district.

(6) Madhya Tradesh


L i k e B i h a r and U t t a r P r a d e s h ,
M a d h y a Pradesh is also a H i n d i
speaking State.
After
reorganisat i o n , the S t a i r has a population Of
26.1 mn (of w h i c h nearly 4 mn are
t r i b a l s ) as compared w i t h 18.4 mn
in the past. I t s area has increased
by 41.021 sq miles to 170 902 sq
miles.
W i t h its present area, it is
second only to B o m b a y while in
p o p u l a t i o n , it r a n k s seventh. It has
lost 36,708 sq miles of V i d a r b h a to
B o m b a y State but has gained in
area by the i n t e g r a t i o n of Bhopal
(area : 6878 sq
miles).
Madhya
B h a r a t f a r e a : 10/178 sq miles) a n d
V i n d h y a P r a d e s h (area: 23,003 sq
miles ).

(7) Madras
L a n g u a g e ; T a m i l . P o p u l a t i o n has
declined f r o m 35.7 mn to 30.0 mn and
area has declined by 10.252 sq miles
f r o m 60,362 sq miles to 50,110 sq
miles,
K o l l e g a l T a l u k has gone to
Mysore, Kesargod taluk to Kerala
w h i l e five t a l u k s f r o m T r a v a n c o r e Cochin have been added to it a f t e r
r e o r g a n i s a t i o n . B a n k ; f i f t h accordi n g t o population a n d eleventh i n
area,

(8) Mysore
Language: Kannada.
Both the
p o p u l a t i o n and area of Mysore have
m o r e t h a n doubled, f r o m 0.8 mn a n d
33,309 sq miles to 19.4 mn a n d 74,093
.sq miles respectively.
T h o u g h -the
old name is retained, M y s o r e is virt u a l l y a new State, K a r n a t a k a of
the K a n n a d a speaking people.
It.
has g a i n e d in area by 40.784 sq
miles by the i n c o r p o r a t i o n of Belgaum
(minus
Chandgad
Taluk)
B i j a p u r . and D h a r w a r d i s t r i c t s (area,
r o u g h l y 17,430 so miles) a n d K a n a r a
d i s t r i c t (area 3.971 sq miles) of
Bombay;
GuIbarga,
Raichur
and
B i d a r d i s t r i c t s ( a r e a : r o u g h l y 18,000
sq miles) of H y d e r a b a d .

(9) Orissa
L a n g u a g e ; O r i y a . Orissa has not
been affected by States re-organisation.

subdivision of K o t a h district to M a d hya
Pradesh
but
gained
Ajmer
(area: 2417 sq miles) a n d A b u Road
t a l u k of B a n a s k a n t h a d i s t r i c t of
B o m b a y and Sunel Tappa of B h a n pura tehsii of M a o d s a u r district, of
Madhya Bharat.

of M a n b h u m d i s t r i c t ( m i n u s Chas
t h a n a . Chandil thana and Patarnda
Police s t a t i o n of B a r a b h u m t h a n a )
a n d of the K i s h a n g a n j subdivision of
P u r n e a d i s t r i c t w h i c h lies to the
cast of Mahanandci river,
Tho port i o n of Gopalpur thana of Purnea
d i s t r i c t which lies to the n o r t h of the
N a t i o n a l h i g h w a y in the said t h a n a ,
i n c l u d i n g the h i g h w a y has also been
t r a n s f e r r e d to West Bengal f r o m the
