OVERVIEWAFS Kanpur was commissioned in 1971. There are two types of products handled; namely, Aviation
Gasoline 100 LL (AVGAS 100 LL) and Aviation Turbine Fuel of Kerosene Type (JET A-1). Jet A1 is
received from Mathura Refinery and Allahabad Terminal. AvGas is imported from South Africa and is not
produced in Indian refineries. Its customers are Indian Air force, HAL, Indian Airlines, Carnet Customers,
IIT-K.
Here, we have two CRVTs (229 kL each) and two UG tanks (70 kL each); having total capacity of 598
kL. There are two static water tanks, having a total capacity of 90 kL. The AFS has 3 pumps (2 for receipt
and 1 for delivery) and one DG set of 32 kVA. We have two bowsers of 6 kL each. Our sale is 350 kL
monthly.

Batch Numbering SystemEach new cargo receipt by ocean tankers or multi-product pipeline is assigned a batch number on the
basis of batch formation test report Test B. A typical batch no format is:
Product code/Organization code/Refinery code/Tank no/Serial no. of batch in that tank since its last
cleaning. For eg: Jet A-1/IOC/RM/2/7; indicates that product is kerosene type ATF of Indian Oil, and is
taken from Mathura refinery from tank number two, and serial number of batch is seven.

Product Pipeline Movement Diagram in AFSFigure below shows product movement in AFS and is self-explanatory. It is to be noted that CRVTs are of
floating suction type. This is because any sediments or water will be at the bottom. Thus, floating suction
ensures, that only best product is used for delivery to the customer. The UG tanks have a slope of 1:60, so
as to move contaminants on the lower side. All pipelines, storage tanks, bowsers, TTs and any other
equipment handling aviation fuels needs to be epi-coated which prevents corrosion of material. We also
use filters, strainers and coalescers at various stages so as to eliminate the presence of any sediments and
water. The IATA specifications allow only 30 ppm of water, and only 1 ppm of sediments.
Before delivery to aircrafts via bowsers, presence of water is checked by adding a tablet of Aquadis to
sample. It is capable of detecting presence of water even at 15 ppm. The presence of sediments is detected
visually. A document named as AV 7 is jointly signed by IOC officer and Pilot of the aircraft, which is a
measure of quality and quantity of the product dispensed. This is for non-air-force requirements. Air force
brings its own bowsers for product. AvGas is sold in the form of barrels.

Quality AssuranceTTs are used for ferrying ATF should have the chambers internally epi-coated. So are the tanks, pipelines
etc. Some of the tests are: Copper strip test, Silver strip corrosion test, Millipore test, Test H Density at
15 OC, Temperature, Appearance, Water/Sediments.
Quality is of vital importance in aviation fuels considering the fact that equipments used in aviation
industry are very critical for the life of passengers. There should not be any deviation on any parameter as
far as fuel is considered. Product is blended with anti-freezing agent, so that the fuel
doesnt freeze even at 47 OC.

A schematic of the bowser/refueller panel is shown in figure. Emergency shut-off lever is used to shut-off
the product delivery operation in case of emergency.

Closing Activities:

Cross check is done for all refueling and decantation operations for each tank.
QC documentation for all the deliveries in the day is finalized.

Sales register is tallied with the activities during the day.
