COVENANT UNIVERSITY

Course Compact
2015/2016 Academic Session
College:
Engineering
Department: Chemical Engineering
Course Code and Title: CHE 323 (Transport Phenomena II)
Units: 3 Units
Course Lecturers: Dr. Udonne, Engr. Adeeyo and Miss O. R. Oresegun
Semester: Omega
Location: C29, Chemical Engineering Department
Brief Overview of Course: Transport Phenomenal deals with the transfer of three basic
quantities in Chemical Engineering: Heat, Mass and Momentum. The concept of conservation
and rate of transfer of these quantities has wide applications in separation processes, heat
exchangers design and heat transfer in general, sizing and design of pumps, pipes, compressors,
valves, cooling systems, drying etc. Transport Phenomena II focuses on application of transfer of
these conserved quantities in humidification and de-humidification, cooling tower design,
drying, compressible flow and analytical and numerical solutions of heat transfer in slabs,
composites, cylindrical and spherical materials.
Course Objectives: At the end of the course students are expected to be able to:
Perform basic calculations under humidification and read psychrometric chart.
Design cooling tower given certain conditions.
Carry out drying calculations and determine requirements for drying conditions.
Carry out process design for compressible flow in nozzle and pipes .
Perform analytical and numerical solutions of steady and unsteady state heat conduction.
Method of Lecture Delivery/Teaching Aids: Use of multimedia in lecture delivery,
digital course notes and interactive delivery of concepts.
Course Outlines: Compressible flow: Normal shock waves, flow in pipes and nozzles.
Cooling Tower Design: psychometric charts, estimation of tower heights, humidifying
tower. Drying: Drying mechanisms, estimation of drying periods, description and
function of industrial drying. Conduction: The Fourier equation and application to
composites, cylinders and sphere. Analytical and numerical solutions of steady and
unsteady state conduction equations. Prerequisite - CHE313
Module I:

Week 1: Humidification, dehumidification and definition of terms

Week 2: Use of psychometric chart.
Module II: Week 3: Theory of cooling tower.
Week 4: Cooling tower design
Module III: Week 5: Theory of drying
Week 6: Drying calculations
Module IV: Week 7: Ficks law of heat conduction and applications to slabs
Week 8: Application of Fick law to composite, cylindrical and spherical materials
Week 9: Analytical and numerical solutions of heat transfer problems
Module V: Week 10: Energy equation and compressible flow in nozzles

Revision:
Tutorial:

Week 11: Compressible flow in pipes

Week 12: Revision
Tutorials to be given on each module

Method of Grading: Continuous Assessment 30%,

Examination 70%.
Ground rules & Regulations: - Assignments must be submitted promptly
-Lateness to lecture hall and disturbances would not be condoned
- Minimum attendance is required to sit for exam.
Assignments: Assignments is given after each module to cover the topics.
Alignment with Covenant University vision- Transport phenomenal II would help students to
be well grounded in the fundamentals of processes involving heat, mass
and momentum transfer and applications. This knowledge gives them
confidence in the design and operations of equipment for such processes.
Industry Relevance: Transport Phenomena is highly relevant in the industry since
processing plants are network of pipes, with fluids flowing through, and
vessels. The pressure drop in the pipe must be determined in order to
know the power requirement of the pump. Also, the basic concepts
necessary in the design of cooling tower, drying equipment, pipes and
nozzles for compressible flow and various heat transfer equipment are
examined.
