Economy in dire straits

Blockade crippled districts
Major worry for finance boss
There is very little linguistic fault. Instead of Finance Boss, Finance Minister
should be used. The headline should be somewhat like this,

Economy in dire straits

Blockade crippled districts
Major worry for finance minister

He had a choice: starving to death

In this news, the reporter discussed about the family of Tara Mia, who had no
other alternative than to find some work in Dhaka to live after the harvest season.
On their way to Dhaka from Rangpur, they were caught in arson attack. Though the
headline is a offbeat headline, it should be started with They had instead of He
had, because the report is talking about the whole family of Tara Mia.
The headline should be They had a choice: starving to death

Leading citizens to meet Hamid

Want presidents help to initiate national dialogue
Hamid is used to represent president. Using direct name, instead of title
seemed gaudy to me. The headline should be like, Leading citizens to
meet president.

MEDIUM-SMALL RETAIL BUSINESS

70pc sales gone with blockade
Gist of the report is, 70 percent of retail sales across the country decreases for
blockade. First of all, percent sign (%) or the word percent should be used instead of
pc, because at a first glance, most people dont understand it. The headline also
contains some linguistic fault. It should be constructed like this, 70 percent sales
drop for blockade.

Saudi jobs up for gentle workers

Great news for drivers, house helps as Dhaka,

Riyadh set to sign landmark deal today.

The gist of news is, Saudi wants to recruit some drivers
and house-maids from Bangladesh on a regular basis. The
cause for the use of the word Gentle is not clear
however. Saudi jobs up for workers or Saudi jobs
up for Bangladeshi workers is good enough I think.
In second deck sub-editor used the word house helps,
which is not very understandable. Instead house-maids
could be used.

Big step in Saarc Travel

4 south Asian nations close to
a deal allowing cross-border
movement of motor vehicles
1st deck is too ambiguous. Its not clear. Instead of Saarc Travel,
Cross-border movement could be used. I think, the first deck
should be somewhat like this,
Big step in travel between Saarc countries or
Big step in cross border movement

Arson, bomb attacks on

Dozens of innocent people
including bus passengers,
truck helper injured
Arson, bomb attacks carried on or Arson, bomb attack
continued on is much better than just, Arson, bomb attacks on.
Its not grammatically incorrect, but it sounds incorrect.
Daily Star is a very well edited newspaper.
