Plane Geometry Syllabus

Prerequisite: A pass in Algebra 1

Textbooks:
Discovery Geometry by Sierra

Basic Geometry by Jurgenson and Brown

Geometry by Holts, Rinehart and Winston

Students Practice handbook (Homework workbook) by Holts, Rinehart and Winston

Course Description:
This is the first mathematics course in which the student sees a mathematics
system, developed from simple definitions and fundamental axioms grow into a full
and useful body of knowledge. This logical development is the prime reason for the
study of geometry. The course emphasizes deductive reasoning. It will include the
following topics: congruency, parallelism, similarity, circles, constructions, areas and
volumes with emphasis placed upon problem solving, original proofs, reasoning, and
probability. Other topics would include coordinate geometry and trigonometry.
Students will get a chance to discover ideas using technology. Although a graphing
calculator is not required, one would be helpful. A TI-83 is recommended

Course Goals:
Identify and analyze properties of two and three-dimensional objects.

Investigate relationships including similarity and congruence among classes of two

and three-dimensional shapes.

Construct and critique the validity of geometric conjectures and prove theorems
using direct and indirect methods.

Use Cartesian coordinates to analyze geometric situations and solve problems.

Explore and determine a variety of measures including area, circumference, volume,

angle measure, distance, and midpoint.

Identify classes of lines, their properties and angles formed.

Construct geometric shapes by hand and using technology.

Solve problems in geometry.
