Discovery Geometry by Sierra
Course Description:
This is the first mathematics course in which the student sees a mathematics
system, developed from simple definitions and fundamental axioms grow into a full
and useful body of knowledge. This logical development is the prime reason for the
study of geometry. The course emphasizes deductive reasoning. It will include the
following topics: congruency, parallelism, similarity, circles, constructions, areas and
volumes with emphasis placed upon problem solving, original proofs, reasoning, and
probability. Other topics would include coordinate geometry and trigonometry.
Students will get a chance to discover ideas using technology. Although a graphing
calculator is not required, one would be helpful. A TI-83 is recommended
Course Goals:
Identify and analyze properties of two and three-dimensional objects.
Construct and critique the validity of geometric conjectures and prove theorems
using direct and indirect methods.
Grading
Tests, quizzes, projects, class work, and homework is integrated. School district
policy on weighting will apply. Tests will be announced. Quizzes may be announced
or unannounced.
Make-Up work
All work missed should be made up within three days after return to school. This is
the responsibility of the student. Missed test and quizzes will be made up by
appointment, after school hours (3pm-4pm)
Supplies
A Graphing calculator (TI-83), a notebook, a folder, a geometry set, and a graph
book
