You are learning dictionary skills to enable you to


1. Find meaning of word in the dictionary;

Identify common registers

Identify appropriate meaning of words as used in the context

Identify meanings of words through prefixes and suffixes

2. Refer dictionary to identify word usage;

Identify words according to common, formal or informal usage


Distinguish differences in homonyms, homophones and homographs

Identify common collocations in a dictionary

3.Use phonetic symbols for pronunciation

Articulate words based on

Dictionary Exploration
1. Get one reading article.
2. Identify 10 new or difficult words.
3. Tabulate them in the table provided
4. Use the dictionary to find the phonetic symbol, part of speech, meaning, usage (10 marks)

B.

Use your dictionary to do the following; (8 marks)


1. find 5 pairs of homonyms
2. find 5 pairs of antonyms
3. find 5 pairs of synonyms
4. find 5 words of collocation
