PART II: FYP TITLE AND SYNOPSIS

Title: FINITE ELEMENT FORMULATION OF HEAT TRANSFER PROCESS IN CONCRETE WITH
DIFFERENT SURFACE COLOUR PROPERTIES
Objectives:
1. To develop the finite element formulation.
2. To analyze heat transfer process of concrete sample using develop Finite Element
Formulation.
3. To verify the developed formulation using existing commercial Finite Element Software such
As AnSYS or ABACUS.
Scope of Study:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Different properties of surface colour have a different of heat transfer energy.

White colour is a control samples for this study.
Modeling by using MATLAB software.
Thermal properties of concrete also affect the heat transfer.

Expected Results:
1. 2D Finite Element Formulation will be developed for heat transfer process in concrete with
different surface colour.
2. Developed Formulation give a result almost similar to existing software.

PART III: INTEGRATION OF COMPLEX PROBLEM SOLVING (CPS) IN FYP

It is hereby certified that this Final Year Project shall have the following Complex Problem Solving
(CPS) attributes:
Please provide a description of activities or work in your Final Year Project that exhibits each CPS attribute.

Complex Problem Solving

Attribute

CPS1

Depth of knowledge required

Characteristic
Cannot be resolved without in-depth knowledge

Description:

Student has to understand the concept of heat transfer in concrete by different colour determination before
conducting the study. In order to make the relationship of the study, the formulation of Finite Element developed
using MATLAB will compared with the developed formulation using commercial Finite Element Software such
as AnSYS. Apart from that, student should know the properties of color surface, properties of concrete and heat
formulation to verify the result. Student should have in depth knowledge on the thermal transfer such as
conduction, convection and radiation.

CPS2

Range of conflicting
requirements

Involve wide-ranging or conflicting technical, engineering and

other issues

Description:

Students will go to understand the importance of thermal properties and geometrical properties of heat transfer.
Students will be discussing the importance of the study in the literature review section.

CPS3

Depth of analysis required

Have no obvious solution and require abstract thinking,

originality in analysis to formulate suitable models

Description:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Finite Element method analysis

Basic equation of heat transfer
Properties of selected colour
Properties of concrete
Properties of thermal equilibrium
Properties of geometrical of heat transfer
CPS8

Consequences

Have significant consequences in a range of contexts

Description:

In the conclusion section of the study, student will relate the significance/important of the study and result
obtained from the study with a range of engineering works.

CPS9

Judgment

Require judgment in decision making

Description:

Based on previous studies and knowledge acquire student will make judgement whether the results obtained in
their analysis are sound and whether the analysis carried out is suitable.
