April / May 2016

LOSS OF OUR LITTLE GREEN NUMBER

14 BUS!
Andrew Turpin writes:

Tatworth bus users will know that as from 11th April

we have lost our green number 14 bus. This bus was
particularly useful as it wove its way through the village
stopping where it was required on its way to Chard.
This policy of drastically cutting out bus services is being
replicated all over England and the effects on the
increasing numbers of elderly and those unable to drive
are devastating! It is leaving those in rural communities
totally isolated!

There is already evidence of how this is affecting the

people of Tatworth as some are migrating to next door
Devon, where they can travel by public transport in the
evenings and on Sundays. We cant in South Somerset
(Thorncombe, one of our neighbouring parishes) has now
lost its remaining two once a week bus services. It now
has no bus services and is totally isolated. As for
Tatworth, it now just has the every hour and a half
Monday to Saturday bus service, but not in the evenings
nor on Sundays. I am in ongoing discussions with the
Regional Commercial Manager for another company,
Stagecoach, exploring the possibility of extending the
route of the number 4 Exeter to Axminster bus to Chard
via Tatworth.
Relative observations on the subject
Over recent months/years funding by way of subsidies
has been slashed with bus companies then either unable
or not interested in running services where receipts are
not in line with a paying service. Therefore as subsidies
are cut there will be ongoing reductions in the public
services, not only in Somerset but in adjoining counties
and across the country.

Editors comment...
It is ironic that RAG has already investigated the
possibility of introducing a community mini bus to be
run by the community. Finance was obtained to
conduct a survey to establish support for a project
which covered Tatworth, Forton, Hawkchurch, Winsham
and Thorncombe. Support was not forthcoming from any
of the villages with the survey results being published
in the December issue of The Drift. As reported then,
no further action will be taken.

TATWORTH AND FORTON PARISH COUNCIL

Jubilee Field
A fruitful venture from Tatworth and Forton
Parish Council?
Tatworth and Forton Parish Council own a 6.3 acre
field, voted to be a conservation and community
recreation area by residents.
Though not formally open, the field with its beautiful
views and ambience has been proving very popular not
least with Tatworth School as a nature study area.

The Parish Council has received a grant from County

Councillor Jill Shortlands Health & Wellbeing Fund,
which has gone towards the Parish Councils latest
venture to plant 90, succulent, disease resistant fruit
trees, not requiring pesticide sprays. The fruit will be
for the whole community to enjoy and from which to
benefit.
There will be
cherries and
Lambourne,
(actually an
Plums.

varieties of fruit; apples, pears, plums,

green gages. They will include Lord
Adams Pearmain, Ellisons Orange
apple). Oullins Gage, and Victoria

It is hoped the project will encourage the learning of

fruit tree husbandry by all ages, so that residents can
perhaps learn how to grow their own fruit trees.

With the help of volunteers, the tree planting took

place on Saturday 19th March at 10am and the trees
have been planted mid-way up the field on the right
hand side.

Annual Parish Meeting

The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Thursday
evening 28th April 2016, commencing at 7.00pm in
the Main Hall of Tatworth Memorial Hall. All local
organisations and clubs are invited to attend and make
a presentation. If you do wish to make a presentation,
please inform the Clerk and send a copy of your report
in advance via the details below.

Allotments
Allotments are available for use next to the Jubilee
Field. Some full size plots of 125m2 have been
prepared with the turf having been removed and
manure spread in readiness for use. Smaller plots are
also available. A spring fed well is now fully working
and rabbit proof fencing has been erected.

MEETING OF TATWORTH WI HELD ON

THURSDAY 18th FEBRUARY 2016

Angela welcomed everyone and birthday cards were

handed out. Previous Minutes, which had been e-mailed
to members, were agreed and signed. Chard WI won the
recent skittles match we played with them at the
Bell & Crown. We have another skittles match on March
24th against Ilminster WI so lets hope we have better luck
next time!
There will be a WI Quiz in July hopefully organised by
Ilminster. A request for members to help at the next
Bath and West Show on 1- 4 June, although Angela warned
that it is hard work and involves standing up all day.
On the other hand, helpers get free admission and time to
look around at the show.
The Pantomime Group has asked us to bake some cakes
for them, as we do every year, and several people
volunteered for this. In return they give us 2 free tickets
for the Thursday performance which we give as a raffle
prize.
The Spring Ramble will be at Culmstock on 28th April at
10am, cost 5, although the area is very hilly. Angela
proposed that we do a litter pick around the village
maybe in March. Thanks were expressed to Debbie Gill for
volunteering to be our new MCS and she is the person to
speak to if you want to register for the Moodle.
Sue Cheese has arranged a lunch on March 18th at the
Blue Ball Inn near Sidmouth, 2 courses for 9.95. The meal
in May will be a Garden Party at Sues to celebrate the
Queens 90th birthday starting at 5pm till dusk. It will be
Starters and Desserts and people were encouraged to
wear at hat if they wish. Theres a Wine & Cheese evening
at Jessicas on 1st July and the Summer Lunch will be at
the Greyhound Inn at Staple Firzpaine - more details to
follow. Jane has arranged a visit to Pittards in Yeovil on
the morning of July 5th.
Angela apologised to everyone for the speaker in January
not arriving - it is believed this was due to ill health.
The speaker about Knitted Knockers was also unable to
come but as we had sufficient notice it was arranged that
Sean Clarke would come to demonstrate Oregami.
He explained that Oregami means to fold paper, an art
started in China and transferred to Japan. All Japanese
children learn how to make a crown, the Japanese symbol
for peace. We first had paper in Europe in the 1400s and
many items were originally designed in Oregami including
stents and airbags for cars.
Despite there being over 40 of us, Sean was able to help
us to each make a fairly intricate basket in 2 colours.
Our thanks to him for his skill, humour and considerable
patience!

TATWORTH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Update from the Chairman.

Our second evening meeting of the year, on Thursday 10th
March 2016, featured Adam Wallis, a Gold Club speaker,
with a presentation of Spring Colour - a very appropriate
subject at this time of the year.
At the next evening meeting, on Thursday 14th April 2016,
at the Memorial Hall, the speaker, Brian Hesketh, will deal
with the subject of Organic Vegetable Gardening.
Our meetings are open meetings - visitors, at a charge of
2.00 per meeting, are most welcome. The annual
subscription to the Society remains at only 3.00; due
and payable on the 1st January each year or on joining.
Bookings continue to be taken for the Summer
trips which will be as follows:

Tuesday 10th May 2016. Bristol Botanical Gardens.

Leave Tatworth Memorial Hall at 9.30am (not at 9am as
previously advertised). Inclusive cost ( coach and entry
charge) 15.00. Bring a snack for mid-trip. Fish n chips
etc. stop on return journey paid by individuals.

Monday 13th June 2016. RHS Garden at Rosemoor.

Leave Tatworth Memorial at 9am. Inclusive cost 12.00.
Wednesday 13th July 2016. Burrow Farm Gardens. Leave
Tatworth Memorial Hall at 2pm. Leaving Burrow Farm
at 5pm. Inclusive cost (coach and entry charge) 9.50.
Cream Teas, paid for by individuals, may be ordered
when booking the trip.
April usually is the month for sewing crops outside and
with longer daylight hours there is a time bonus. Plants
sewn indoors can be pricked out and possibly by the end
of the month can be planted out after ensuring that they
have been hardened off. Along with growing plants the
month will, no doubt, witness the arrival of the weeds and
insect pests - be vigilant.

All the hard work in this month should result, in May, in

one seeing the many emerging plantings with the promise
of good things to come. Enjoy!

TATWORTH FLOWER CLUB

Valerie Garth writes:

Club members and visitors enjoyed a flower arranging
demonstration by Angie Norris from Gillingham, Dorset,
entitled A few of my favourites, depicting her
interpretation of her favourite musicals such as Billy
Elliot, The Lion King and The Sound of Music.
The vote of thanks was given by Vivienne Dalziel.

The Club competition Mothers Day was judged by Angie

and points awarded as follows: Intermediate: Pat Sargent
9pts, Jean Down 8pts. Novice: Valerie Garth 9pts.
The Judges Choice being awarded to Pat Sargent.

YES, ITS THAT OLD CHESTNUT...

PLEASE PICK IT UP..!
Sandra Munday (Yes, a grumpy old woman!) writes:

I have been a resident of our

village in Tatworth for some
years now and sadly the age
old problem of dog fouling
still causes offence and
unnecessary distress to many
people who might otherwise
feel more kindly to our four
legged friends. I frequently
enjoy walking my dogs around the village, particularly
taking footpaths into the nearby fields and woodlands as
do many others. The actions of a few however spoil these
walks as I am always needful of being on the look-out for
dogs mess along some of the paths. There is one dog
owner in particular (you know who you are) who
frequently walks his/her dog for exercise (and I use the
term exercise loosely) quite obviously for the purposes of
toileting - the dog is let off the lead and immediately
after performing within a few yards returned on its lead
to home. This is an extreme and blatant case of dog
fouling but there are others and we cannot blame visitors
but only the locals who live here in our lovely village.
Surely it is not so difficult to carry a supply of pick-up
bags in a pocket? Yes, occasionally a dog may have an
accident and foul in an unfortunate spot with it being
difficult to pick up but usually a nearby resident can
assist with bags or watering can. It is not this occasion
that I am referring to, but the people who do not care
and disregard the responsibility of good dog ownership
with whom I take issue. I wonder if these people also
have their animals regularly wormed, vaccinated and
micro chipped? This latter requirement will become law
on 1st April by the way.
Finally, yet again can we please take pride in our village,
keep dog ownership as a privilege and pick it up, dispose
of it in the bins provided or take it home!

On behalf of all good dogs, who also dislike having to

side-step piles of poo when out enjoying walks with their
owners, I sign off.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday April 7th when Nicky

Heal from Taunton will be showing us how to weave plant
material with a few tricks of the floristry trade.
The Club competition for April is a Woven Design.

The annual outing will be on Monday 13th June to see

a Flower Festival Made In Dorset at Athelhampton
House, Dorset, organised by Owermoigne Flower Club.
All welcome 20 to include coach travel and admission.
To book please contact Rosalie Palmer on 01460 65883.
Meetings are held in Tatworth Memorial Hall, TA20 2QW.
Doors open at 1.30pm for a 2.00pm start and visitors are
most welcome for an entrance fee of 5.

Issue 74 The DRIFT

ST JOHNS PARISH DEVELOPMENT PLAN

During March, St John the Evangelist in Tatworth

launched its Parish Development Plan and the 150th
Anniversary Appeal at a Tea Party in the Church Hall. The
Parish Development Plan, approved for adoption by
the PCC was the culmination of the Confident Christian
Communities initiative which has been discussed by both
congregation and clergy during a 12 month period of
consultation.
The event also included the official launch of the 150th
Anniversary Appeal with details of how the church
proposes to raise funds to help make the Parish
Development Plan a great success and reach its goals.
The Plan includes providing storage space in the Church
Hall to enable us to use it to its full capacity and make
the Hall more welcoming for the community to use.

Currently, it is used by Tatworth Church Youth Club on a

weekly basis and during school holidays a Holiday Club is
organised for children living in the village. It is used for
our regular quizzes, Lent Lunches and other social and
fund-raising events throughout the year. In order to
maximise the Halls full potential and offer the facilities
to other groups, including a Mother, Baby and Toddler
group, an extension is proposed, plus installation of a
baby changing facility and modernisation of the current
toilets.
Work has already taken place with the renewal of the
Church path, following a very generous grant by the
Parish Council. This was achieved with the hard work and
support of more than 30 people living in the village under
the guidance of Richard and Kaye Down who volunteered
to project manage. It now means we can use the Church
Hall and grounds, following the closure last year due to
unsafe and hazardous conditions that previously existed.

As well as Kaye & Richard this group of volunteers

included many other local contractors, such as BE Powell
& Sons and Ian Ellis who gave their time voluntarily. We
would also like to express our gratitude to Chard Building
Supplies, Yeovil Hire Company and Bardon Aggregates for
the provision of materials and loan of machinery.
Community spirit is well and truly alive in Tatworth and
we cannot express our thanks enough to all those who
participated in this project and to the many people who
have supported our events over the last year or so.

The Social and Fund-raising Group and the 150th

Anniversary Appeal Committee are planning a number of
events throughout next 18 months. We would welcome
anyone who would like to attend the many functions
planned, including the lunch on Sunday, 12th June to
celebrate Her Majesty, the Queens 90th birthday and the
Victorian Breakfast at St Johns on the 28th July. A full
list of events throughout the year will appear on our
posters in the village and outside the Church.
On Sunday, 18th September Bishop Ruth of Taunton will
preside and preach at a Service of Holy Communion to
celebrate and commemorate the 150th anniversary of
St Johns becoming the Parish Church of an independent
parish. MP Marcus Fysh and the Mayor of Chard will also
be in attendance. All people from the community are
warmly invited to join us at the Service which
commences at 10am, followed by refreshments and a
celebratory cake in the Church Hall.

Do come and join us and help us develop St Johns role as

an important centre of community activity in the village.

EARLY SPRING CONCERT at ST JOHNS

Lesley Frankau writes:

A wonderful concert, attended by many local people, was
thoroughly enjoyed at St Johns, Tatworth on Saturday,
5th March, courtesy of Dr Richard Godfrey, on the piano,
accompanying mezzo soprano, Elizabeth Denham.
Dr Godfrey, a retired specialist in lung disease holds the
Associateship of the Royal College of Organists and is still
an active teacher of young organists through the Salisbury
Diocesan Pipe-up scheme. He still continues to teach
for the World Health Organisation.

Elizabeth Denham studied at the Parish Conservatoire

eventually joining the DOyly Carte Opera Company and
has also worked with the English National Opera. Recent
engagements include Haydns Nelson Mass last December
in Wimborne Minster.
The first half of the programme featured Sir Edward
Elgars Song Cycle: Sea Pictures - a superb and
atmospheric rendering by both pianist and songstress
which transported us to blue skies, gentle breezes and
surging seas. If only we could, on a chilly March night,
heed the words by poet Richard Garnett, leave me, let
me go and see the land where corals lie we would have
done so willing. However, we can only dream of such
delights!
Following a brief interval to quench our thirst
with refreshments, which whet our appetite for
the second half of the evening, which featured
selections by Gilbert & Sullivan and Flanders
and Swan.

The perennial Tit willow from the Mikado plus

other gems from Iolanthe and Patience were a joy!
The rousing songs by Flanders & Swan, The Gnu
and Transport of Delight, being two favourites,
the latter recalling the joys of travelling on Londons
red buses, caused great mirth and shouts of hurrah,
which brought the evening to a rousing conclusion.

Our gratitude to Richard and Elizabeth (who came from

Wimborne Minster to perform) for their entertaining
programme and for Richards kind offer to perform an
organ recital early next year. Another superb evening to
which we all forward to in 2017. Their generosity in giving
their time freely raised 250 for the proposed Hall
extension which will provide additional much-needed
space for our Youth Club and other local groups.

ST GEORGES DAY LUNCH

On Sunday 24th April we shall be celebrating the patron

Saint of England, St George with a lunch after Morning
Service. A day late, but never mind! It was such a
popular event last year that once again we will be
providing traditional English dishes such as Kate and
Sidney (Steak and Kidney to the rest of us), Cottage Pie,
Chicken Casserole and a vegetarian option. Desserts will
include fruit crumbles or pies and other delectable
dishes, perhaps even a roly poly pudding which some of us
may well resemble after such a scrumptious feast. Wear
something loose, is my advice!
The cost of the two course meal, including soft drinks
(bring your own wine or beer) is 6 per head and tickets
are available from Helen Johnson, Tel: 01460 220221 at
the beginning of April. It helps with catering to gauge
numbers, but nobody will be turned away if it is a late
booking. So why not come along and enjoy home-cooked

www.tatworthandforton.co.uk

food, no cooking with waitress service, no washing the

dishes or clearing away afterwards? Entertainment
provided by some of our talented members whilst you
enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. What could be better!
We look forward to seeing you.

Dates for your Diaries!

Back by popular demand, the Thatcher/Gibbins family
who will be raising the roof once again on the 21st May
with their energetic performances and superb playing of
various instruments not forgetting their wonderful
singing. So much talent in one family!

Tickets available in April from Helen Johnson, (what

would we do without Helen and Kens ticket office
throughout the year and no booking fee payable either!)
on 01460 220221. Price the same as last time 5 each or
12 for a family of four. Doors open at 6.30 pm for 7 pm
performance. Refreshments provided during the interval.
Lunch on Sunday 12th June to celebrate the
Queens 90th birthday
An exciting weekend with cities, towns and villages
celebrating throughout June with street parties, gardens
parties or even barbecues.

St Johns is going to commemorate the weekend too

with a celebratory lunch around 12.30 am, after morning
service, to be held in the Church grounds. We
shall pray for fine weather and trust the day will
be bright and sunny so come prepared with hats,
sun cream and sunglasses!
Buffet lunch plus soft drinks will be provided at a
cost of 6 per head, children half price. Bring
your own beer or wine, if preferred. We hope to
provide some entertainment for children too.
Further details in the May issue of The Link. So
watch this space and make a note in your diaries!

ST JOHNS CHURCH GAMES EVENING

Much hilarity could be heard in St Johns Church Hall one
Saturday evening in February when members of the
congregation and local villagers participated in a fun
Games Evening. Such wonderful titles as Logo, Pass the
Bomb (that one certainly went with a bang!),
Scattergories, (new one on me, but it created much
laughter from the team of six), dominoes, scrabble,
carpet bowls to name only a few of the games on offer.

The pictorial quiz, brilliantly arranged by Monica Mason,

had all participants delving into their memories to recall
such gems from 1960s detective series to the present
day. Shouts of who loves you baby, who can forget
Telly Savalas as Kojak, James Garner in the Rockford
Files or Raymond Burr as Ironside. Did I hear
somebody say they were forgettable! Shame on to you!
You must be a Miss Marple fan!
Famous designers, Name the Game, Countries and their
flags - ooh that was difficult - members of the Royal
Family; we all achieved 12 points for that one (I could
not possibly reveal who didnt) and other delights
from decades ago. A wonderful trip down memory lane!
Congratulations to Rosemary Heeks and her friend Eileen
Rolph, who achieved top marks and won a bottle of wine.
Well be round soon girls to help with the wine tasting!
Well bring the nibbles!
Our thanks to everyone who came along, entered into the
spirit of the evening and declared it was better than
watching television any day and helped to raise 100 for
Church Funds.

TATWORTH WIVES GROUP

Hester Down writes:

At our meeting in February John & Diana Pearce spoke about
their travels in Alaska. Having flown to Vancouver they
cruised along the Western coast of Alaska, leaving their
cruise ship to go on excursions by sea, road, rail and river.
Their holiday which catered for people with disabilities
included whale watching expeditions and a visit to Juneau,
a large town only accessible by ship or seaplane. They also
journeyed on the scenic Skagway White Pass Railway, saw
the Hubbard Glacier, travelled to Anchorage and visited the
Denali National Park before returning to Vancouver by air
and rail. Their talk, together with the slides and film they
took on their travels was very informative and we learnt
much about the wild and remote terrain of Alaska, its harsh
climate and effect on the people that live there.
Our speaker in March was the Rev. Judith Abbot who talked
about her life and how she came to enter the Ministry.
Judiths father became a vicar after working in the power
industry but after leaving school she trained as an infant
teacher, married when 22 and had four children. Sadly her
marriage broke up and it was then she found herself
unexpectedly tentatively exploring the possibility of
entering the Ministry. She undertook training at Exeter
University whilst working part-time and caring for the
children.

After serving as a curate in North Devon she moved to

Chardstock as Team Vicar in the Axminster Team Ministry
where she met her current husband, Roger. After moving to
Tatworth she was licensed in 2014 to serve as Associate
Priest in our Benefice, and last February was commissioned
in Bath Abbey as Diocesan Chaplain to the Mothers Union.
One of her daughters, Maria, is the third generation to
follow in what has now become a family tradition and enter
the church - she is currently a curate.
Our next gathering will be on Thursday 7th April at 7.30pm
in the Tatworth Church Room when Linda Vijeh will talk on
Love and Food in Literature.

This is a new venture for Sales and Wants. A single

coloumn chance to advertise those unwanted bits and
bobs.

charge of 2.50 per issue will apply.
Again copy with payment should be sent to the Editor

EDITORIAL

Welcome to our second effort at providing an interesting

Drift which it is hoped you will enjoy. You may notice
that some long standing advertisements are no longer
with us. Following the notice printed in the last Drift
they have lapsed.

As an experiment it is hoped to introduce a single

classified coloumn for small sale/wants for Tatworth
residents. Entries should be no larger than 5 lines, plus a
contact number. A small charge of 2.50 will apply, all
proceeds to support The Drift.
I have stated previously that the Drift is reliant on
contributions from all organisations and volunteer
labour, not only for production but also distribution;
without which it would not appear on the doorstep.
In addition, sponsorship
advertisers is vital.
