Calculus BC Collaboration Problem Set 1

For all problems:
1. Express your work in standard mathematical notation rather than calculator
syntax.
2. Unless otherwise specified, your final answers should be accurate to three
decimal places.
3. Unless other wise specified, the domain of a function f is assumed to be the
set all real numbers x for which f(x) is a real number.

Calculator Allowed

1. At closing time at a shopping mall, the mall does not magically empty. There are
customers completing sales and employees who have to go through closing
procedures. In the table below, t = 0 represents the announced closing time of the
mall, negative numbers represent time in minutes before closing time, and positive
numbers represent time in minutes after closing time. The total number of people
in the mall at time t is modeled by a strictly decreasing, twice-differentiable function
P. Values of P(t) at selected times t are given in the table below:

T (minutes)
-25
-15
0
10
30
P(t) (people) 750
420
175
90
25

(a) Use the data in the table to estimate P(-5). Show the computation that leads to
your answer. Using correct units, interpret the meaning of your answer in the
context of this problem.

30

(b) Use the data in the table to evaluate

P '(t)dt . Using correct units, interpret the

meaing of

P '(t)dt in the context of this problem.

(c) For -25 (t) 30, approximate the average number of people in the mall by
using a right Riemann sum with four subintervals. Does this approximation
overestimate or underestimate the average number of people in the mall over this
time period? Explain your reasoning.

(d) For -25 (t) 30, the function P that models the number of people in the mall
has first derivative given by P(t) = -10.148(0.94)t. Based on the model, how many
people were in the mall 5 minutes before closing time?

2. A 4-hour carnival is serving free steaks. The rate that steaks are being grilled is
364 for t 2
give by the non-continuous function C(t) =
. The rate that the steaks
144 for t > 2
are eaten is given by E(t) = 400 25t 2 as shown in the figure below. Both rates are
measured in steaks per hour and t is measured in hours. When the steaks are done,
they are put in warming trays. There are 150 steaks that are already in the warming
trays when the carnival opens.

(a) What is the rate of change of E(t) at t = 1.5? Explain your answer using proper
units.

(b) What is the average number of steaks that are eaten each hour (nearest steak).

(c) For 0 t 4, at what time t is the number of steaks that are either on the grill or
in the warming trays a minimum?

(d) The carnival stays open after its announced 4 hours. During that time, no more
steaks are grilled, but the remaining steaks in the warming tray are eaten at the rate
of 50 t 4, t 4 . Write, but do not solve, an equation that determines the amount
of time k needed for people to eat the remaining steaks.

Non-calculator Problems:

3. Let f be the continuous function on [-8, 6] whose graph consisting of 3 line
segments, a semicircle of radius 1, and a semicircle of radius 2 is given at the figure
x

below. Let g be the function given by g(x) =

f (t)dt .

(a) Find g(6) and g(-6).

(b) For each of g(5) and g (5), find the value or state that it does not exist. Be
ready to explain your reasoning.

(c) Find the x-coordinate of each point at which the graph of g has a relative
minimum or relative maximum. Justify your answers.

(d) What is the absolute maximum value of g? Justify your answer.

(e) For -8 < x < 6, find all values of x for which the graph of g has an inflection point.
Justify your answers.

4. Consider the closed curve in the xy-plane given by y 3 9y + 4x 2 16x = 10 .
dy 16 8x
(a) Show that = 2
.
dx 3y 9

(b) Find any x-coordinates where the curve has a horizontal tangent.

(c) Write an equation of the tangent line to the curve at the point (4, -2) and use this
line to approximate the value of y in the equation above when x = 4.25.

(d) Determine the concavity of the curve at the point (4, -2).

(e) Is it possible for this curve to have a vertical tangent at points where the curve
crosses the y-axis? Explain your reasoning.
