Input & Input Devices

Anything that has been given to
computer is called input. The
devices that are used to enter data
and instructions into the computers
are called input devices.

A list of most popular input

devices are as follows:

Keyboard
Mouse
Touchpad
Trackball
Microphone etc.

Keyboard:
Its the most commonly used device. It is used to enter the data. It looks like typewriter. A
keyboard has special keys to perform special functions. The buttons present on it are called as
keys. It also contains special
keys called as function keys.
A keyboard used in desktop
contains 101 to 105 keys.

Pointing devices:
Its an input device used to control a pointer on the screen and to give commands to the
computer. A pointer resembles a small symbol on the screen. The pointing device can be used to
move the insertion point; select text graphics, or other objects; and to perform many other
functions in GUI environment.

Mouse:

Standard Mouse

Its a pointing device. It is mostly

commonly used in personal computers.
It is used to control the cursor on the
screen and to give commands to the
computer. The top of the mouse contain
two buttons and one wheel. These
buttons can be clicked once or twice to
perform tasks. Mouse is very easy to
use.

Types of mouse:

Joystick:
Its a vertical handheld lever mounted on a base. The lever can be moved in different directions
to control the movements of objects on the screen. The lever also contains two buttons. These
buttons are called as triggers.

Digital camera:
Its a mobile device. It is used to take pictures/videos. The pictures are stored digitally in its
memory. Most digital cameras store pictures on flash memory or flash memory stick.

Types of digital camera:

Studio camera

Field camera
Point-and-shoot camera

Scanners and reading devices:

These can Figure 7: Studio Camera
capture
data
directly from source documents and
store inside the
computer in digital form. The source may include price or inventory tags, paychecks, brochures,
order forms, answer sheets, photos or any other documents that contains data to be process.

Output & Output Devices

The data processed into a useful form is called output. A hardware component which is used to
receive the output from the computer is called output devices.

Monitors:
Its a display device. It consists of a screen and different electronic components that display the
information on the screen. Information on the screen exists electronically and appears for a
temporary period. Most monitors display texts, graphics and videos in different colors. Those
monitors which display the text in different colors are known as color monitors. However, some
are monochrome.

It is weightless
Commonly used in mobile computers and devices
It uses liquid crystal or gas plasma technology to

It takes less space.

CRT MONITOR

Its heavier than flat panel.

Used in desktop computers.
It uses cathode ray tube to display.
It consumes more electric power.
It can be operated only with electric
power.
It is less expensive.

Printer:
Its a most common output device. It is used to print documents on the paper. The output printed
on the paper is called hard copy. The hardcopy is also called as printout. The printout resolution
is measured in dots per inch. A printer is connected to a parallel port or a USB port of a system
unit by a cable.

They print the information by directly striking the

print hammer or wheel against an ink ribbon.
They are slower in printing.
Less expensive
Rarely used
They produce noise while printing.
They used ink ribbon for printing.
Low print quality
Printing speed is measured in characters per
minute.

They print information without

Plotters:
It is a special output device. It is used for printing architectural drawing, maps, graphs and charts.
A plotter is typically used to print large-format graphs or maps such as construction maps or

engineering drawings. It works on the principle of holding a pen in hand

moving it on the paper for drawing lines.

Audio output devices:

The devices that produce music, speech or
other sounds are called audio output devices.
The commonly used
audio output devices are speakers, headphones, earphones or ear bugs and
headset.

Speakers:

A speaker is used to receive audio output from

the computer. Most personal computers and
mobiles have small internal speaker. This speaker has low
quality audio output. An external speaker can be attached to the
computer for high quality audio output.

Data projector:
With the help of a projector, we can display information on large
screen. The information may be printed on the papers or it may be
an output of the computer. Usually, they are use in colleges and universities for delivering
the lectures.

FAX Machine:
It is known as facsimile transmission
machine. It works as both input and output devices. It sends and receives data through telephone
line. The fax machine at sending site scans information printed on paper. It converts the
information into digital/analog signals.

Types of fax machines:

Dedicated fax machine
