ABORTION IN THE PHILIPPINES

No society permits one human to intentionally harm or take the life of another
human without punishment, and abortion is no different. Abortion is one of the most
persistently controversial issues in the Philippines, the reality for many women in
the
country. Such is the fate of many Filipinos today. But many consider it a taboo and
the
Church regards it as a mortal sin. Regardless of Church teachings, Filipino women
still
resort to abortion. It is the worst thing a woman can do against human dignity. It is a
crime against life. Abortion devalues our appreciation of fellow human being. In
some
Christian areas, like the Philippines, abortion should be made illegal since we
believe
that life begins at conception, thus it is a kin to murder as it is the act of taking
human
life. Abortion is immoral and it should not be legalized.
An abortion can result in medical complications later in life. It is also a threat to
the
mothers health. Abortion not only kills the baby but may kill the mother too. Many
complications are common after an abortion like the inflammation of the
reproductive
organs. As well, increases the risk of breast cancer. She can suffer an infection or
internal bleeding. She could also become sterilized. Others die because of blood
poisoning. Many poor women divulged risking their health and lives by self-inducing
abortion using catheters or dispensing drugs without proper dosage and supervision
eventually suffering complications. As a consequence of these threats of
prosecution,
women end up dying because they delay going to hospitals or do not seek
emergency

medical care at all.

Abortion frequently causes intense psychological pain and stress. A woman not
only
has to deal with physical consequences, but also psychological problems that could
last for a lifetime. Women that abort usually suffer severe traumas. They feel
worthless
because they failed at the most natural of human activities; the role of being a
mother.
Some consider themselves as godless and uneducated, some would even go as far
as
saying these, we are living and walking sins that should be stoned and nailed on
the
cross. Some women feel emotionally unprepared to enter parenthood and raise a
child; they are too young or do not have reliable partner with whom to raise a child.
Many young women in high school or college find themselves pregnant and must
choose between continuing the education they need to survive economically and
dropping out to have a baby. After all, the greatest for their action is the pain and
guilt
they will carry all their lives. The scars may not be visible, but they exist in many
places;
their memories, their dreams and even in their waking moments.
Abortion should be forever illegal. In this society, abortion can never be justified
or
reasoned. Neither should it be condoned. As a civilized society, my stand on
abortion is
obviously negative. It has been there for as long as one should remember. But this
does
not mean it is something that can be passed and adapted through generations just
like
our customs and traditions. I believe that women who committed abortion are
victims

themselves. Do women have the right to steal the life of a new living being? Killing
a
person is illegal, so why should a fetal murder be legal?
