AMA1110 2015/16 Semester 2

Assignment 2

AMA1110 Basic Mathematics I Calculus and Probability & Statistics

Assignment 2 (Lecturer: Raymond Sze)
This assignment contains TWO parts, each part carries 50% towards the assignment.

Due Date for Part A: 11:59pm, April 8, 2016 (Friday)

Part A (50%) You have to complete Part A online via an online assignment system WeBWork
<https://courses1.webwork.maa.org/webwork2/hongkongpoly-ama1110/>

Instructions for WeBWork

Your login name and password are assigned as follows.
Username: Your PolyU student ID Password: Your Last Name (in lowercase characters)
After you login to the system, you will find AMA1110 Assignment X in the main page. For each
problem in the assignment, there will be blank(s) in which to enter your answers. You can enter your
mathematical answers (with mathematical symbols) in plain text and then click on Preview Answers
to see your entry in the mathematical form. Click Submit Answers to submit your answer for instant
grading. You can re-submit again if your previous answer is incorrect. Except those specified in the
problem, you will have unlimited attempts for each problem.
You may also print the assignment by click the link Download PDF or Tex Hardcopy for Current Set
and then Generate Hardcopy. A PDF will be generated and you can work on the assignment offline.
But remember you have to submit your answer online.
For numerical answers, please enter at least 4 significant digits if it is not exact. You can also answer
in terms of expressions, for example, 2 2 + 3 2 + 1 is the same as 11 and 3 sin(pi/4) is the
same as 2.1213. Some standard symbolic expressions are shown as below. A detail list can be found

Assignment 2

Due Date for Part B: 5:00pm, April 8, 2016 (Friday)

Part B (50%) Please complete the following questions in Part B and hand in your work (in hard
copy) during our lecture or to my office at TU831 or my mailbox (Raymond Sze) at TU710 on or before
the due date. You are strongly recommended to do your homework using A4 papers. Your answer
should be presented in a clear, decent, formal, precise, and concise mathematical way in English.
1. [8 points] A class of introductory probability consists of 10 sophomores, 60 juniors and
30 seniors. The final grades show that 5 sophomores, 9 juniors and 1 senior received an
A grade.
(a) If a randomly chosen student is found to have earned an A grade, find the probability
that he or she is a junior.
(b) Are getting an A grade and being a junior independent events? How about the
events of getting an A grade and being a senior?
2. [8 points] In a shop, 65% of the customers pay by credit cards. It is known from past
experience that among those spending at least 5000 dollars, 80% pay by credit card, while
among those spending less than 5000 dollars, only 30% pay by credit card. Suppose a
randomly chosen customer is found to have paid by credit card. What is the probability
that he or she spent at least 5000 dollars?
3. [6 points] The random variable X is a discrete random variable taking values in {2, 3, 4},
representing the number of errors per 100 lines of software code, has the following probability distribution:
x
f (x)

a

Find the value for the unknown variable a. Furthermore, evaluate the variance and
standard deviation of X.
4. [10 points] Suppose that X N (10, 25). Find
(a) P (X > 11); (b) P (9 X < 12);
(d) a so that P (X < a) 0.1787;

(c) a so that P (X > a) 0.7357;

(e) a so that P (8 < X < a) 0.1355.

5. [9 points] In a quality control process, 30 units are randomly selected each day from the
production line to check for defects. It is known from past experience that the probability
of having a defective unit is 0.03. If at any time, 3 or more defective units are detected,
the process is stopped.
(a) Find the probability that the process stops in a randomly selected day.
(b) Suppose that this screening process is performed for 5 consecutive days. Find the
probability that the production process is stopped on exactly 2 days in this period.
6. [9 points] A sales manager receives 6 telephone calls on average between 9 : 30am and
10 : 30am on a weekday. Find the probability that
(a) he will receive 2 or more calls between 9 : 30am and 10 : 30am on a certain weekday;
(b) he will receive exactly 2 calls between 9 : 30am and 9 : 40am;
(c) during a normal 5-day working week, there will be exactly 3 days on which he will
receive no calls between 9 : 30am and 9 : 40am.
