Scenario 1: The most suitable approach for this scenario is Rapid Application
Development.
-Since there is a deadline of 6 months it would be wise to use RAD as it speeds up
the SLDC and moves many of the critical design decision to a position earlier in the
project to help project manager recognize and address risk factor, also keep the
expectation in check. The traditional method (waterfall) would take too long and
does not allow easy schedule changes. Prototype, due to project team consisting of
skilled users in all areas in the organization there could be many revision requests
which could eat up time. End User development would be a bad alternative
because there could system incompable within the AIS.
Scenario 2: The most suitable approach for this scenario is prototype. Prototype is
not for longer or complex systems, it is for major organization performance which
fits Steves case. Steve the owner does not what question to ask as part of his
analysis. AIS is not visualized.
Scenario 3: The most suitable approach for this scenario is End User Development.
Samantha is fully aware of all the requirements and has great working knowledge of
the database systems. She will be using Microsoft Office suite, including Microsoft
Access. All of these define End User Development: Simple reports, User Control,
Meets user needs and Schedules and Spreadsheets/Database.
Scenario 4: The most suitable approach for this scenario is traditional. The key
deliverable are presentable to shareholders for approval. It would not be rapid
application development because there is time constraint in this project. It would
not be prototype because prototype is less appropriate for large or complex systems
that serve major organizational components or cross organizational boundaries or
for systems developing standard AIS components
2a) The challenges that rogers face in the installation of its new retail system are:
a) Rogers needs to avoid interruption to service, systems in all 93 stores should
be upgraded simultaneously when the stores are closed, which will be trick
when dealing with stores across four time zones.
b) The upgrade would take place in the middle of winter when the weather was
unpredictable, with periodic snow and wind storms and temperature diving as
low as -27 degrees Celsius.
2b) The implementation techniques that Rogers employ to assure a smooth
transition to new system are: Rapid application development. The time line is
within 4 months and it is mentioned that with each installation, lessons were
learned and problems became fewer. The installation at the fourth store was carried
out flawlessly. (four actual store was use before implementation)
2c) Rogers feel it is necessary to upgrade all stores at the same time? What are the
benefits and risks of that decision? All system needs to be compatible. The
benefits would be less downtime and any system issues can be found and
corrected. There is a timeline that the installation needed to be finish on time. The
risk is that there is a possibility that a failure in the installation could occur delaying
the store to open the following day. Huge operational lost if there is an issue if it is
not solve in time.
2d) What role did communication technologies play in the success of this upgrade?
The team used share point intranet to all experts involved to communicate online.
The spent weeks developing, testing and adjusting the new system in the virtual
store. The development continued until all experts were satisfied. Also
communication were setup that would allow each technician to give a step-step
report to the control centre at headquarters.
