ADORATION
Have you ever taken a quiet hour one-on-one with
God? Even doctors will tell us it is good for the brain
and definitely it is good for our soul. Every Second
Tuesday, we offer Adoration with the Blessed Sacrament
from 9-5pm in the Paulist Center Chapel. Right now, we
are looking for people to commit to one hour. Or--maybe you can offer to be a substitute when others have
an appointment or are out of the area. Come and give it a
try. We provide spiritual reading material---or bring your
own. Good time for Journaling or writing cards to
family and friends. Please contact Dorene Dehen
(DoreneDn@comcast.net 503-704-3155 cell)

A WORD FROM SERVANT OF GOD ISAAC HECKER,

FOUNDER OF THE PAULIST FATHERS
This will increase individual action, liberty and energy. This will revere the
present attitude of Catholics throughout the world. Instead of being subject in
their political life as they are now to an infidel minority, and sometimes a very
feeble one, they will exert an influence outweighing largely their own numbers;
they will take the direction as the natural leaders of all the great enterprises of
society, and embrace also in their views and actions the whole world. [On the
Mission of New Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill, and you
believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP at
202-269-2519 and tell him your story.

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY

Our actions need to authentically reflect Gods Mercy. At the end of the day,
spend some time in reflection ---either alone or with othersrejoicing in the
love and mercy that was shown to you by God and others throughout the
day. Even if you had a rough day, where did you see Gods Presence in your
life? In what ways can you be a missionary of mercy to others in your
home, work and community? You might want to keep a little journal of your
reflections and at the end of the month you will be amazed where God has
taken you!

Pastoral Corner
Fear Filled & Fear Driven Fundamentalism

Fr. Charlie Brunick, CSP

The faith of Thomas, as expressed in today's Gospel passage, is, like all fundamentalism, essentially fear filled and fear
driven. Yet his very fear masks a deeper longing that he can't quite articulate.
In his initial refusal to listen to or believe the testimony of others, Thomas is looking for absolute certainty. For most
fundamentalists all issues are either black or white. If something is not literally true it isn't true at all. As simple and
as straightforward as this approach might seem it is actually a very impoverished way of seeing reality. In its onedimensional approach it deprives real faith of its depth, of its richness, of its need to trust in the guidance of the Holy
Spirit. It confuses the 'certainty of faith' with the certitudes of logical rationales based on empirical or scientific
evidences. In the Annunciation story, the deep faith of Mary of Nazareth is shown in her willingness to accept and to
believe the message of the Angel Gabriel even when and perhaps because she doe not fully understand it. Mary acts
with the certitude of her faith, even when a logical or rational explanations for Gabriel's message is missing.
Fundamentalism results in a simplistic, moralist and authoritarian approach to religion and faith. The individual is
submersed into being little more than a member of the herd rather than someone living their own life of faith, each
with their own experiences and faith story and a particular path to follow.
Paradoxically, Thomas' own demands that he be able to put his finger in the nail holes in Jesus' hands and his hand
into Jesus' side indicate the deeper longing he may not have fully understood: Thomas had lived and walked and
talked with Jesus for the better part of three years. He had heard Jesus words and experienced Jesus deeds, his love
and his devoted presence. It was this experience of Jesus life in his own life that Thomas again longed for, wanting
to experience it anew. Most often in the New Testament, the word for faith is a verb, not a noun. You 'do' faith, you
don't really 'have' or possess it.
For the fundamentalist faith is mostly a noun, and religion and faith are simply parts of life. For the non-fundamentalist,
faith is mostly a verb. You don't have faith as much as you should be doing faith. The lived experiences of faith-filled
and religion-filled life are what real life is all about.
Jesus didn't then and doesn't now want fundamentalist followers. He didn't want people following blindly. He wanted
people to follow him freely and boldly and with eyes wide open to the journey through faith and life - to risk and
perhaps at times fail, but to get back up again. Jesus came that we might have life and have in abundance - not just
in the hereafter but in the here and now as well.

SCRIPTURE NOTE:
SUNDAY OF EASTER

2ND

How do we witness to modern doubters like

Thomas---- that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead?
The Grace for that task comes from the Scriptures,
homilies/reflections, teaching, personal witness,
identifying Gods Presence in our daily lives, and
Liturgical celebrations etc Todays passage affirms
that people come to believe in the Risen Christ
through their experience of the believing community--people just like us---people just like Thomas. So we
ask ourselves: Who helps me now continue to grow in
my life as a witness to the Resurrection? And-- how
does my life reflect the risen Christ for others?

Seafood Fest ---- A

Crackin Good Time!
The Lenten Seafood Festival committee, together with parish staff, wish to thank all
workers (including the students from St. Mary's Academy, La Salle and Beaverton High
Schools) and attendees whose support raised funds for St. Philip Neri. Great food and
atmosphere made a fun evening "out," with lots of family members, old friends, and
former parishioners attending.
Congratulations to Frank Baccellieri who won the 50/50 raffle that
ran in tandem with the Seafood Fest! The
parish is grateful to him for donating his half
share of the $609 back to the church.

As of March 30, 2016:

Income:
$8857.00
Expenses:
$2944.11
Net Profit:
$5,912.89

Let's make an
effort to support
the sponsors,
listed below, by
patronizing
their businesses.
Without that extra boost, the festival would not have been the financial success we
believe it was. When you patronize a business, tell them you are a St. Philip Neri
parishioner so they recognize our appreciation. It might even motivate them to help us
again in the future.
