TOPICS:
• TORTURE
• PACIFISM
• HOLOCAUST
PROPONENTS VIEW:
Torture should be legalized and is a "morally defensible" interrogation method.
In a paper soon to be published in a US law journal, the head of Deakin
University's law school, Mirko Bagaric, and his colleague Julie Clarke argue that
when many lives are in imminent danger, "all forms of harm may be inflicted on
the [suspect] - even if this results in his or her annihilation".
AN INDEPENDENT VIEW:
CONCLUSION:
I support torture when it’s used for some advantageous purpose. But not the
kind of torture that we see in Iraq etc. the torture that is appropriate in
appropriate situations.
PACIFISM:
Pacifism is a term, derived from the Latin word for peacemaking, that has been
applied to a spectrum of positions covering nearly all attitudes toward war. On
one extreme pacifist designates any person who desires peace, thus describing
those who wage war as much as those who refuse participation in war. On the
other extreme pacifism also describes renunciation of force and coercion in all
forms.
PROPONENTS VIEW:
Generally pacifism is thought to be a principled rejection of war and killing as
morally wrong. Thus some who called themselves “pacifists” (for example,
during the First World War) supported war as a suitable means toward peace.
And Richard Nixon once called himself a pacifist, even as he continued to
support the Vietnam War. This perverse use of the idea of pacifism is
connected to the way in which a term like “pacification” can be employed in
military usage to describe a violent process of suppressing violence, as when an
enemy territory is “pacified” by killing or disabling the enemy. While George
Orwell and others have complained about such euphemistic descriptions of
violence, the just war tradition does hold that war can be a suitable means to
bring about peace.
INDEPENDENT VIEW:
In simple words, pacifism is the end to violence and it says that we should
settle our disputes no matter how big they are with mutual discussions.
CONCLUSION:
I consider pacifism the best option when it yields out a favorable result. At
least it sets an example and stops violence.
HOLOCAUST:
The Holocaust (from the Greek word holos, "completely" and kaustos, "burnt"),
also known as Ha-Shoah (Hebrew), Churben (Yiddish), is the term generally
used to describe the killing of approximately six million European Jews during
World War II, as part of a program of deliberate extermination planned and
executed by the National Socialist regime in Germany led by Adolf Hitler.
PROPONENTS VIEW:
Christian leaders from a wide spectrum of traditions and denominations are
expressing their full support for a brand new initiative to educate Europeans
about the tragic realities of the Holocaust and what the implications are for
today. The campaign “learn from history” is initiated by the European Coalition
for Israel in collaboration with a broad group of Christians leaders ranging from
the charismatic movement to representatives from the Catholic church as well
the Dutch reformed church.
