operates onshore and in shallow coastal waters of the Emirate of
Abu Dhabi, one of the seven members of the United Arab Emirates
which was established on 2nd December 1971.

The original concession agreement was signed with Petroleum


Development (Trucial Coast) LTD, on 11th January 1939, but
geological work did not begin until after the Second World War.
Exploratory drilling began in Abu Dhabi in February 1950.

The first commercial oil discovery was made at Bab in 1960, and
exports began from the Jebel Dhanna terminal on 14th December
1963. In 1962, the Company was renamed the Abu Dhabi Petroleum
Company, ADPC. On 1st January 1973, the Government of Abu
Dhabi acquired a 25% interest, which was increased to 60% as from
1st January 1974. The Government interest is held by the Abu Dhabi
National Oil Company, ADNOC. ADCO was incorporated under law
No. 14 for 1978, on 8th October 1978, and has been responsible,
since February 1979, for operations in the concession area,
which, after relinquishments, now covers more than 21,000 square
kilometers.

Introduction to SKEA
& EFQM
The Sheikh Khalifa Excellence
Award (SKEA) is designed
to
provide
organisations
with a road map to help them improve their
performance, to support a healthy economy and
to unify their management practice in a balanced
holistic model.
The award is in the name of H.H. Sheikh
Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the
UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, demonstrating
the commitment and support of the highest
leadership in the UAE for the business
community to embrace the principles of quality
and business excellence, in order to achieve the
best operational and financial results.
SKEA is based on the EFQM (European
Foundation for Quality Management) model.
The EFQM model encourages organisations to
move from rigid corporate structures to more
agile ones that are better suited to the rigour of
todays global economic environment.
This model helps to assess a companys
performance and identify key strengths and

areas for improvement. It integrates existing


tools, procedures and processes, to align all
and remove duplication. It also introduces a
way of thinking that encourages reflection and
stimulates continuous improvement. In addition,
it identifies what actions are really driving key
results, which areas need more attention, and
which approaches should be made redundant.
Some of the benefits of this model include:

stakeholders.
Ensure that initiatives dont run on a standalone basis but are, rather, interlinked
towards the same goal.
Show stakeholders that the company is
a credible,trustworthy partner achieving
sustainable results.

This model assumes that Excellent results with


respect to Performance, Customers, People
and Society are achieved through Leadership
driving Strategy, People, Partnership and
Resources and Processes providing products
and Services.

ADCOs submission and explain the audit process


of SKEA. All criteria owners and members
participated in these workshops, in addition to
some of the ADCO Executive Management Team.
These practice runs gave the criteria members the
knowledge and direction of the audit process and
were beneficial to all.
Moreover, senior members of the SKEA Project
Task Force took the time to hold awareness
sessions about SKEA. All areas of the company
were covered, from the main offices to the fields,
with briefings being presented about ADCOs
application for SKEA and the advantages of it.
Q&A sessions were held which made it clear to all
staff that SKEA is a big milestone and for ADCO
to achieve it would be a success, not only for the
company but to them as employees.

This initiative was led by Mohamed Daoud,
Projects Quality Manager from Engineering &
Projects Function, and was endorsed by the
Executive Management Team. A dedicated
SKEA Task Force was created and comprised of
many unique individuals across the company from
the different functions and departments and with
different backgrounds.
At first, all of ADCOs processes were reviewed
and assessed to see how the Company is aligned
to the EFQM model, where our strong points are
and where we were lacking. This took several
months of going through all departments and

divisions seeing how they all combine to meet our


Shareholders KPIs and targets.
The ADCO submission for the SKEA was next.
Deadline for the submission was in April 2012.
A dedicated team was focused on this task for
approximately two months; to help them in this
task, some of the individuals took the EFQM
assessors course to have a better understanding
of an assessors outlook. In addition to this,
experienced qualified assessors were invited to
give an outsiders outlook over ADCOs submission
document.

On 16th and 17th May, ADCO welcomed three


assigned SKEA Assessors. The initial meeting
was held in the Main Board Conference Room on
the 15th floor of the Main Tower. The welcoming
meeting, led by Mr. Abdul Munim Saif Al Kindy,
our CEO, was attended by all members of the
Executive Management Team and all the criteria
owners and members. Mr. Al Kindy welcomed

the guests and informed them of how big an


opportunity this was for ADCO. He also introduced
them to the criteria owners and the plan for the
two-day visit.

On Monday 24th September, the SKEA ceremony
was held, with ADCO being announced as a

Continuing to grow and improve in the area of
excellence is a primary focus of which we strive
not to lose sight; therefore, we must be strongly
committed to attain and sustain excellence at
all stages of ADCOs business operations and
processes.

On 22nd October 2012, ADCO celebrated the
winning of the SKEA Gold Category. A vast area
of the usual parking lot was dedicated for this
celebration, it being transformed into a traditional
setting with a stage and an elegantly designed
dining area.

This is a great achievement for ADCO, who, in our
first year of participating in this esteemed award,
came out as winners. Not only that, but we also
achieved the highest points in the Gold Category
overall.
During SKEAs 11th cycle, ADCO participated in
a year that saw the most competitive range of
participants / submissions, including our sister
company, ADGAS. The ceremony was under the
patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed

bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu


Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the
UAE Armed Forces.
The award was established to ensure the
highest quality standards in products of national
institutions and to give them a competitive
advantage according to international standards
and specifications. The philosophy and objectives
of the award reflects the keenness of President
His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan
to make a quantum leap in the role of national
organisations in line with the prestige enjoyed by
the UAE economy on the regional and international
levels and to promote UAE industry.

The celebrations kicked off with a live traditional


band amidst tents filled with traditional food
corners for light snacks and refreshments. After
the staff settled into the seating area, Mr. Al Kindy
gave a short speech, expressing his pride in
ADCOs latest achievement and the necessity to
strive for more.
He said: At ADCO, we have provided our full
support to the Excellence and Quality Community
and will continue to do so. This has come in a bunch
of different ways, such as our strategic partnership
with the Emirates Quality Association. ADCO is
prepared and ready to work with SKEA and the
Abu Dhabi International Center for Organisational
Excellence to promote and endorse the culture of
Excellence among the local community at large
and the Oil and Gas sector in particular.

Later, members of the Executive Management


Team were singled out for special appreciation,
along with other key figures in this achievement.
Members of the SKEA Task Force were also
recognised for their efforts.

During the ceremony, His Highness Sheikh


Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime
Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs,
presented the coveted award to Mr. Abdul Munim
Saif Al Kindy, ADCO Chief Executive Officer.
Also in attendance were His Excellency Sheikh
Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher
Education and Scientific Research, H.E. Ahmed
Juma Al Zaabi, Deputy Minister of Presidential
Affairs, H.E. Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi, CEO of
ADNOC, a number of senior state officials, and
managers of national companies.

Nuaimi, the Saudi Oil Minister, both being received
by the ADNOC Director General and CEOs and
senior officials from ADNOC Group companies,
along with the UAE Minister of Higher Education
and Scientific Research, H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin
Mubarak Al Nahyan, and the British Minister of
State for International Development, Alan Duncan,
who described ADIPEC as the most impressive
event of its type in the world.
The two-storey stand won the coveted Best Trade
Stand Award, being selected from those of around
1,600 companies from 91 countries, in recognition
of its unique design, intellectual content and
visitor success. The award was presented at
a special ceremony attended by H.E. Abdulla
Nasser Al Suwaidi, the ADNOC Director General,
the ADNOC Deputy CEO and senior oil and gas
executives from both the UAE and the region.
The stand was visited by a large number of college
and university students from various institutions,
including the Petroleum Institute and the Glenelg

School of Abu Dhabi, who came to learn both


about the oil and gas industry and to explore the
prospects for future careers.
In a statement released at ADIPEC, ADNOC
noted that it has allocated billions of dollars to
several mega-projects, some of which are under
way while others are in the pipeline. These include
the boosting of the production capacity of ADCOs
onshore fields from 1.4 to 1.8 million barrel a day
by 2017. This will involve the comprehensive

ADIPEC 2012 (the Abu Dhabi International


Petroleum Exhibition and Conference), one of the
largest energy events in the world, was held under
the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al
Nahyan, the President, from 11th-14th November
at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. It
was opened by H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al
Nahyan, National Security Adviser and Deputy
Chairman of Abu Dhabi Emirates Executive
Council, and was the 15th in the series.

ADNOCs Director General, on the ongoing megaprojects that are being executed by ADNOC
and its Group of Companies. He commended
the progress achieved by the UAEs oil and gas
sector and the key role played by ADNOC in

appreciation for the efforts made by the Group in
terms of Emiratisation and the development of the
countrys human assets.

290,000 to 340,000 barrels a day, of Sahil, from
55,000 bpd to 100,000 bpd and of Shah, from
50,000 bpd to 70,000 bpd. The new Qusaihwira
Field will also have two gas separation lines in a
new central plant that is due to be operational by
the end of March 2013.

include the development of
the Thamama and Habshan 2
reservoirs to boost production
to 80,000 bpd. Habshan 1
is also under development,
the first package of which
is estimated to increase the
production by 30,000 bpd by
the end of 2014. In the NorthEast Bab Fields, development
should increase sustainable
production to 230,000 bpd by
2016 (for Rumaitha Field) and
by 2017 for Al Dabbiya Field,
while the Bida al-Qemzan Field
development and the Bab Gas
Compression projects are also
under way.

to Fujairah, for the export of Murban-grade crude.

Team Retreat
ADCOs Senior Management Team met at the St.
Regis Hotel Saadiyat Island on October 10th
and 11th to discuss and agree on ADCOs main
areas of focus for 2013.
With almost 60 people attending, the retreat
started at 8:00 in the morning of the first day. It
represented the first step towards setting the
2013 strategy plan which will be translated into
objectives (Must Dos) and measures. These

from which Assets and functions will build their
balanced scorecard before the end of the year.

expires in January 2014. He emphasised that the
most likely models to be accepted will not have a
major impact on our current systems or people.

Part one of two

Bu Hasa A Story of Continuing Success:


Establishment of the ATC

In 2008, under the guidance and patronage of


the ADCO CEO, Mr. Abdul Munim Al Kindi, and
the Extended Management Team, EMT, the
ADCO Training Centre, ATC, was established
at Bu Hasa, one of the Companys remote oil
concession areas on the edge of the Empty
Quarter. The initiative was championed by Mr.
Ateeq Belal Al Qemzi, SVP (TPO), under the
auspices of the CEO, and was instigated by Mr.
Ahmed Al Hammadi, (SVP (SE).
They oversaw the nomination and selection of four
OJTs (On-the-Job Trainers) who were to head the
oil industry disciplines recommended for teaching
at the ATC, (Mechanical, Electrical, Operations,
and Instrument/Control) along with Technical
English, IT, MAXIMO, PIES and Safety.
S i nce its inception four ye a rs ago, ADCO
Management and the ATC Bu Hasa staff have
made great strides in improving the ATC by
constructing more smart classrooms. They have
also acquired additional training equipment and

developed the workshops (where 75% of handson training occurs) as well as the courses delivered
to trainees - the other 25% of training sessions
being delivered by experienced engineers in
smart classrooms.
Mr. Mohamed Juma, SVP(BUH/HW/BQ),
Mahmood Al Amiri, VPD (BUH/HW/BQ), and
Ahmed Najeeb, VPO (BUH/HW/BQ), have given
their stalwart support and assistance to the
programme from the very beginning.
Anwar Rostom (the ATCs original OJT, Mechanical)
explains: After a thorough discussion with the staff
and Management at Bu Hasa, Bu Hasa Training
Centre was chosen as the best location for the
ATC, largely because it already had workshops
and was one of the first training centres ADCO
established. From then on the ATC developed
by leaps and bounds, with the workshops being
upgraded to incorporate equipment contributed by
all ADCO fields.

The selected location allowed the ATC to integrate


three workshop trainers and one English language
instructor from the Bu Hasa Training Centre into
its staff, all of whom had previously been training
UAE entry point employees in the Company to
qualify them as trained technicians. To manage
the ATC Bu Hasa, ADCO EMT appointed Dr.
Haider A. Hussain as the ATC Bu Hasa Manager.
The new ATC Bu Hasa premises originally
consisted of two main workshops, adjacent offices/
classrooms for the English staff, an administration
area and a cafeteria. The first priority was
therefore to build more classrooms and furnish
them for the expected influx of trainees. To this
end, an additional floor was added to the ATC
above the Machine Workshop, incorporating six
furnished classrooms and staff offices. ADCO
Management planned to make Bu Hasa the main
training centre for the line, and every new intake
of 10- employees selected was to start its training
sessions at the centre. It, therefore, gave its full
backing to making the ATC Bu Hasa a success.
The role of Learning & Development Department
and Recruitment Department in Abu Dhabi
and the backing of the Support Services
Function have been essential for the successful
implementation of the ATC programme at ATC Bu
Hasa. Mohamed Sultan Al Zaabi, VP (HR), and
Mr. Mohamed Al Qubaisi, SVP (SS), in concert
with their expert teams, have worked diligently
to make the ATC programme a success. They
have given tremendous support, even to the
extent of contacting newly-selected candidates
at weekends to make them available for English
placement tests and interviews, and for completion
of recruitment formalities before joining the ATC
Bu Hasa. The HR team has also facilitated the
ongoing processing of trainee documentation,
working closely with ATC Bu Hasa to handle all
required paperwork.
With such unwavering support, the initial group of
students at the ATC, Group A Mechanical(M),
comprised four trainees who joined in the fourth
quarter of 2008. Meanwhile, the ATCs four
nominated OJTs and Technical English instructor,
Anwar Rostom (Mechanical), Mohamed
El Kasrawi (Electrical), Abdel Halim El Komey
(Operations), E.P.K. Nair (Instrument/Control) and
Gerard McKeown (ELC) set up syllabuses for their

individual disciplines and developed appropriate


handouts and booklets to cover the material to be
studied for each course. This material was based
largely on the ADNOC Training Institute (ATI)
curriculum. As Mohamed El Kasrawi explains: We
gathered information on our subjects from many
sources to train and qualify young technicians in
order to meet ADCOs requirements. However, our
main resource was our own years of professional
experience, which on average must have been
around thirty-five years.
ATC Bu Hasa OJTs gave, and still give, daily
assessments to ensure that their trainees - mostly
graduates from the UAEs Institutes of Applied
Technology (IATs), the ATI, and high school
science streams fully comprehend what they are
taught. Assessments and daily exams are both
practical and theoretical. In addition, ADCO Senior
Management visits the ATC Bu Hasa regularly in

order to gauge the standard of the trainees and to


ensure that the high quality of the courses being
taught is maintained. The SVP (TPO) reviews
the daily assessment results and visits the centre
at least twice a month to interview the trainees
and examine them as part of their onsite training
programme.
A trainee from the ATCs Group A (M), Mohamed
Al Shehi, said of his time at the training centre:
I was really impressed by the ATCs commitment
and by the dedication of ADCO Senior
Management. We were really lucky to have been
given this opportunity to develop our skills and
abilities while working in the field. I chose to study
at ATC Bu Hasa because students are assessed
on coursework and practical work rather than by
just sitting exams. Now I am doing all the tasks
required of me as a skilled technician.
As the above quote clearly illustrates, it is teamwork
that makes the Training Centre a success, all the
way from the CEO and Senior Management, to
Bu-Hasa leadership, to the ATC Bu Hasa staff
and trainees.

ADCO hosted the Third ADNOC Group Insurance Companies Forum on 17th October in the
head office Boardroom.
The Finance Controller (Insurance), Ahmed
Mohamed Al Amoudi, welcomed participants,
following which the forum was opened by our
SVP (SS), Mr. Mohamed Sanad Al Qubaisi.
Thanking participants for attending, the SVP
(SS) commended ADNOC for their initiative in
proposing such a forum to tackle insurance matters
of mutual interest and encouraged all to share
their best practices and also to approach the topic
in a manner that will enhance the process for the
benefit of their companies and, in turn, ADNOC
and their respective Shareholders.
He also noted the necessity of making use of
the expertise and resources of ADNOC Group
Risk Management Division whenever possible
to sort out any ambiguities in the group policies
and seek clarification to obtain the best possible
rates from the insurers.

He went on to urge participants to identify and


encourage UAE nationals interested in taking
up positions dealing with insurance and to try to
increase their numbers.

The ADNOC representative, welcoming the


remarks of the SVP (SS), told participants that
they could always approach ADNOC for support
and clarifications in matters involving Group
Policies, adding that ADNOC is always ready to
provide whatever help necessary.
A presentation was then delivered by ADNOCs
Ms. Saeeda Al Reyami on the current
A c c o u n t i n g P r o c e s s r e l a t e d t o A DNOC
Group Insurance Accounting, this being followed
by a presentation on the Future Resourcing
Strategy from Mr. Graeme Low that covered
the ADNOC Strategy on Resourcing the
Insurance sector in ADNOC and its group of
companies.
The forum was concluded by an open discussion
session.
On behalf of ADCO Management, the Financial
Systems & Procedures Manager, Samer Akkad,

ADNOC distributed the work load for establishing


a list of Real Work tasks that must be completed
by CAMS graduates during his/her development
prior to integration and then upgrading the
Development framework (DFW) to cover these
tasks.
The upgrade of the DFW to cover the real work
tasks for the following disciplines was assigned to
ADCO:
1. Mechanical Engineering (Development & Site)
2. Petroleum Engineering (Production)
3. Geoscience
4. Petrophysics
The remaining disciplines are assigned to other
OPCOs.

Enhancing

CAMS

Real Work
CAMS development methodology
started in 2004 as a pilot campaign
covering four engineering disciplines.
It has since been expanded to cover
25 disciplines to date.

An action plan was prepared to complete the


whole assignment before the last quarter of 2012.
Several reviews and audits have been carried out
by the international shareholders and ADNOC
by through interviews and satisfaction surveys.
These surveys showed considerable potential
for improvement in the CAMS development
process by focusing on the delivering of Real
Work tasks by the graduates while they are still in
the development phase, before being integrated
into their established and independent positions.
The 2010 audit review by ADNOCs Capability
Management Department also highlighted the
requirement to improve the Real Work experience.
We can define the real work as a minimum as
follows:
1. all work activities that the Graduate should be
able to do after integration
2. all work activities being done in the Graduates
team, which require the Graduates complete
understanding after integration.
However, it still appears that we still have a number
of CAMS graduates, after being integrated, who
are not yet entirely ready to take the position for
which they have been prepared.
This was demonstrated during the Post-CAMS
survey done in 2010 for all OPCOs. This showed
that most CAMS graduates, after being integrated,
still have some gaps in their work experience

Internal Preparation:
On 20th June, ADCO held the first workshop,
for mechanical engineering, ahead of schedule,
thanks to the full support given by Mr. Saleh
Aidrous Al Wahedi, SVP (EP), and all VPs in the
Engineering & Projects division.
It was attended by 9 SMEs from all other OPCOs
and by 3 SMEs from ADCO and was supported by
Johannes Verkoelen, Skill Pool Advisor - ADNOC,
and Johan Stander, Team Leader (Entry Point
Development & Integration) ADCO.

During the workshop,
the SMEs finalised and
agreed on the common

applicable for all OPCOs

The SMEs met in July 2012 to upgrade / align the
DFW to reflect the agreed Real Work tasks.

A list of Real Work tasks is being prepared for


other disciplines for which the lead is being taken
by other OPCOs, including Electrical Engineer
(ADGAS), Process Engineer (ADMA-OPCO) and
Instrument and Control Engineer (GASCO). None
of these are on the list of disciplines designated by
ADNOC. These will be discussed with the OPCOs
in charge of these disciplines.
The SMEs from different disciplines deserve
thanks for the way in which they completed their
tasks while also carrying out their routine work.

The following activities were


conducted inside ADCO
to ensure meeting the set
objectives:
1. Requested SVPs / VPs to nominate
the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for
each discipline.
2. Introduced the new concept / objective
of the assignment.
3. Two internal workshops were arranged
for each discipline / sub disciplines
attended by all SMEs with the same
discipline to prepare a list of the
required Real Work tasks that must be
covered by CAMS graduates before
integration into Target & Independent
positions.
4. Invite SMEs from all OPCOs to discuss
and finalise a common Real Work
tasks list for all OPCOs.

dairy industry. Our appetite for timber and paper
is also a major factor in forest decline.
Its a similar pattern in many of the worlds forests
- from South-East Asia to South America and
Africa. 95% of Paraguays Atlantic Forest has
been wiped out.
We can help save forests - and do our climate a
favour - by reducing our paper use.

Keep millions of important species alive.
Help prevent soil erosion.

And its not just about plants and animals. Around

Building materials.

People in developing countries should be able to


protect the natural habitats they depend on for a
decent quality of life.

Much of this use could be avoided by:
Thinking before you print e-mails.
Using technology in meetings dont print
out reports. Making a PDF is a good way to
make it possible to view on screen.

Incineration
Burning rubbish for energy is promoted by some
as the answer to our waste problem. But in fact
incineration causes climate change and destroys
valuable materials that could be turned into new
products. Burning general waste & used paper is
not the answer. The answer lays in our behaviour
use less & recycle more.

HSED needs to set an example: we need


to conduct a pilot study within our division
to see how much paper is actually used in
a month in our office.

The outcome of this pilot


study should be:


To illustrate the amount of waste


generated in a typical office in a typical
month of operations.
To spread awareness amongst
employees about their daily paper
consumption.
It creates a case study & sets a good
example that other divisions may wish
to follow.
All this should lead to a Paperless Day
throughout ADCO buildings in the future.

Sustainability is a core feature of ADCOs


performance. ADCO is a major international
company and should be setting a good example
in all aspects of its operations. The concept of
looking after the environment better is just one
way of showing that ADCO Cares. However,
ADCO needs your help. You have to play your
part in reducing your paper usage.

The paper reduction pilot study commenced


in the Kidmah Tower on 1st April. The results
are only for the four levels occupied by
ADCO and their personnel.

ADCO needs you to play an active role in the


reduction of our use of paper, and this has to start
today!

The two divisions are HSED & E&P. A


total of 227 employees are in these two
divisions.

19,916 pages were printed in April! This is a


staggering amount and represents a monetary cost
and a cost to the environment in producing this
paper.

Five users accounted for 3,869 pages of printing.

However, from these figures, the average ADCO


employee prints 88 pages per month! This is
clearly a very high figure and needs to be reduced
as soon as possible.
The monetary cost of colour printing, is of course
higher than printing in black & white.

Further study will reveal if these figures are typical


in a normal month. If they are then these two
divisions are printing 238,292 pages in a year!
This is a massive cost to our environment.
The next article will outline strategies on how we
can possibly reduce our printing at work. Clearly
we have great need of this for the good of the
environment which surrounds us all.

The International Professionals in Energy
Conference IPEC 2012 was a great success.
With 260 people in attendance, the conference
lasted for two days with 5 panels with prominent
speakers on relevant topics including Towards a
More Balanced Leadership, Women on Board,
Attracting & Retaining Women in the Oil and Gas
Industry, Work Conditions for Women at the
Field and Future Trends - Better Planning and
Development.

Ms. Hosnia Hashim, Deputy Managing Director,


North Kuwait, Kuwait Oil Company and IPEC
Chair and SPE Regional Director for the Middle
East, North Africa and India Region, expressed
her thanks to the committee members who
had devoted many hours of work to organise
the conference, commenting: It was indeed a
privilege for me to chair IPEC, counting on your
efficient teamwork, commitment, enthusiasm
and diligence, in what was a truly enjoyable
preparation journey. I really wanted to share
with you the joy and pride I feel for this excellent
achievement, as every congratulation received
is also for you.

There was great interest throughout the


conference in the controversial issues which
emerged during the discussion. Attendees learned
how to define their leadership style, develop their
talents, and further their careers. This conference
set a new threshold for the Society of Petroleum
Engineers that will have an impact far beyond
the region to impact on and shape the actions
of the Society in relation to the Empowerment of
Womens Leadership in the years to come.

ADCO has a policy of participating in such


important conferences, and this event was
no exception, with Miss Ayesha Al Marzouqi,
(SRE, Bab & Gas Asset), being a member
of the organisation committee and a session
moderator, while there were also a number
of other participants from the Company. All
felt that it had provided a great opportunity to
communicate with other women in the industry
who are leaders in their respective fields.

The inaugural conference of International


Professionals in Energy Sector, IPEC, was held by
the Society of Petroleum Engineers, in Kuwait on
25th September, under the patronage of H.E. Hani
El Hassan, Kuwaits Minister of Oil and Chairman
of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation. The first
conference of its kind to be held in the GCC, with
the theme of Empowering Womens Leadership,
the conference was dedicated to female oil and
gas professionals who have challenged the status
quo in the energy industry and was designed to
assist female professionals in the industry achieve
their full potential.
Worldwide female leaders in the industry took
part in the IPEC Conference to inspire, motivate
and encourage participants to achieve their
career goals, discover choices and options
to their advantage, understand the nature of
women professionals in different geographical
areas and debate possible barriers relating to
talent, profession, and culture. They shared
their stories of success and identified the key
factors that helped them in achieving their

ADCO operates a club restaurant
in Abu Dhabi head office and large
accommodation complexes in the
fields and terminals with a large
amount of food being produced and
served on a daily basis in Asab,
Shah, Bab, Bu Hasa, NEB and Jebel

Apart from these, there are several
camps with kitchen facilities being
operated by ADCO contractors and
sub-contractors, with many new ones in the
planning stage.

food poisoning outbreaks are attributed
to inadequately trained staff and their
malpractices. Food safety remains a critical
issue with outbreaks of food-borne illness
resulting in substantial costs to
individuals, the industry and the
economy. Training is a planned
process to modify attitude or skills
behaviour through learning, so as to
achieve effective performance in an
activity or range of activities.

Among the ADNOC Group of companies, the


Industrial Hygiene and Public Health team
of ADCOs HSED is the first to be registered
and recognised as an internationally approved
training and qualifications centre by HABC,
the UK certification body, for providing various
levels (Level 1 to 4: Awareness, Basic,

Briefings held on
Career Progression Programme
A series of briefings on the Technical Career
Progression Programme were held in the
fields and terminals and in Head Office during
September to provide employees with an
overview of the programme and to give them
an opportunity to seek further explanation.
The events were co-ordinated by Aseel
Humoodi, our VP for Talent and Capability
Management, and her team. The programme
provides employees with qualifications in the
various surface, sub-surface and operations
related disciplines who are seeking to
develop and advance their technical skills and
specialisations with an opportunity to achieve
their aspirations.
In a message to all staff, our CEO, Mr. Abdul
Munim Al Kindy, noted that the focus on

developing and advancing our internal technical


and leadership capabilities and expertise is a
key enabler to our 20/20 Vision and an aspect
that continues to receive significant Executive
Team attention.
He explained that a dedicated framework for
the development of technical specialists and
experts has been developed that provides a
clear and structured path for technical career
progression in the specialisations that are
required in the Companys business. Part of
this has been the creation of the new T & CM
Division.
As a result, Al Kindy said, those of you who
aspire to develop their technical skills, and
expert knowledge, will no longer be constrained
by the grading system.

Corporate Governance Policy approved


Our CEO, Mr. Abdul Munim Al Kindy, has recently
approved the new ADCO Corporate Governance
Policy, a copy of which has been circulated to all
staff.
The policy demonstrates ADCOs commitment to
a solid governance framework which is ultimately
intended to:

3. Minimise wastages, corruption, risks and

Maad Hasan Qayed, both Production Engineers
under the Technical Support SE Team, for
their completion of assignment 4 in the CAMS
programme.
Mohamed and Maad started the CAMS
programme in mid-2009 and completed it within
3 years.
Their achievement is a source of inspiration
for to all other CAMS graduates across the
company.

With effect from this issue, AL WAHA will be designed


at the Media and Publication Department and printed
in-house, at the ADCO Printing Center, which has
recently obtained a new press suitable for magazine
production. This is expected to provide more flexibility
in the future and also to lead to substantial cost
savings. The magazine will now appear quarterly.

SCMD UAE Nationals Forum


On 11th September, SCMD
organised a UAE Nationals
Forum at Head Office,
attended by the CEO,
SVP-CS, VP-SCM and
approximately 85 national
staff. It was inaugurated by
Aref Al Sayed VP-SCM, who
noted that it was being held
as part of continuous efforts
to enhance the knowledge
and skills of UAE national
staff, so that they could
attain new heights, increase
their responsibilities and
become leaders in the field
of work.
He went on to note that the
new ADNOC/ADCO 2017
objective of achieving 75 per
cent Emiratisation would be a major challenge not
just for SCMD, but throughout most Government
organisations. There was a need for a change
in culture with regards to the stated mission and
vision throughout SCMD, ADCO and ADNOC, he
said.
Mr. David Westerman, SVP-CS, and Al Sayed
distributed appreciation letters and gifts for
distinguished and dedicated staff members who
were hard workers and over-achievers in three
different categories, CAMS, Non-CAMS and
Operational.

Safety induction for


Transport Pool drivers
The nineteen recipients were all given the
opportunity to make a short speech in response.
Reda Morse, (P&PAM), then spoke about the
Vision and Mission followed by Ramzi Al-Maloud,
SCM Adviser, who outlined the expectations of
both SCMD Management and UAE Nationals
from Management and from ADCO as an
organisation.
There was then an open discussion, in which
senior management, from the CEO to Team
Leaders, participated, during which a number
of suggestions for areas of improvement were
made. The discussion also included topics
related to the country as a whole.
Another meeting was held on 16th September
in Bab, following the regular SCMD weekly
meeting, attended by the VP and all departmental
managers, to which all UAE Nationals were
invited.
The two sessions of the forum were considered
to be highly successful, and Aref Al Sayed has
now proposed that it should be held on an annual
basis.

During June, a safety induction was held in the


main hall of the Falcon Club for 65 drivers who
are working with Abu Dhabi Transport. It was
led by Mohamed Salem Al Mazrouei (Transport
Manager), transport pool staff, the Al Dhafra
safety manager and Waleed Alsayari (GSDSenior Safety & Loss Prevention Engineer).
The objective of the induction was to familiarise
the drivers with the hazards and risk associated
with hydrogen sulphide and with the general
precautions to be taken for any accidental gas
release. Knowledge and experience gained
from previous hydrogen sulphide incidents was
shared, in the hope that any recurrence of them
can be prevented. Hydrogen sulphide, H2S, is
highly toxic and flammable, and can present
risks throughout any of ADCOs field areas in
close proximity to facilities.

The Transport Manager concluded the event


by saying that the safety of ADCO employee
and contractors are the first priority of ADCOs
management and they are accountable for the
implementation of ADCOS safety strategy and
precautions. Everyone, he said, both ADCO and
contractors staff, should work together in a safe
manner as to prevent accidents and injuries.

The presentation included photographs and visual


aids of incidents both in ADCO and worldwide.
The induction was part of the continuous
programme of providing HSE training to
contractors, to introduce them to safe working
procedures, to advise them of the relevant
precautionary measures to be taken in the event
of an accidental release of gas and to brief them
on emergency procedures.

ADCOs flag on the top of Mount Kilimanjaro


Mount Kilimanjaro, located in Tanzania, is
the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest
freestanding mountain in the world. It was formed
as a result of volcanic activity that commenced
750,000 years ago. Salem Al Baker, VP (Asab/
Sahil), and 17 other participants of various
nationalities and ages embarked last summer on
a challenge to reach its peak, to stand on the roof
of Africa.
The challenge was organised by Gulf for Good,
a charitable organisation based in the UAE, and
those taking part were required to raise funds to
help the orphans and impoverished children of the
Amani Home Orphanage in the Tanzanian town of
Moshi as a way of giving something back to the
country in which the mountain is situated.
The orphanage provides a home, with shelter,
food and education, for 75 children, between 6
and 14 years old, all of whom have been rescued
from poverty on the streets.

The challengers left Dubai on 5th July, landing at


Kilimanjaro International airport on the morning of
the next day. They then drove to Marangu Hotel at
the base of Mount Kilimanjaro for acclimatisation
at an elevation of 1,400 metres.
On the second day, the group visited the Amani
Home where they were given a brief presentation
on its objectives and responsibilities before
spending the rest of the day socialising with the
children. The director thanked the participants of
the challenge for their generous and humanitarian
contributions.
The trek started through the rain forest where
participants passed through lush, green scenery
before reaching the Marangu Hut at an elevation of
2,740 meters. They spent the night there, leaving
the next morning to make their way through the
rain forest, after which they emerged on to the
lush Alpine meadows, with views and spectacular
vegetation. Their overnight destination was the
Horombo Hut at an elevation of 3,800 metres.

Here they spent one day to acclimatise, before


moving on.
On 11th July the challengers left in the early
morning, heading toward Kilimanjaro itself and
reaching the Kibo Hut at an elevation of 4,700
metres. At 12:00 midnight, fully equipped, the
group set out for the summit. After a long walk up
through a steep, loose and fragmented slope, they
reached Gilman Point at an elevation of 5,681
metres. Here, Salem raised the ADCO flag at
this height. As far as is known, this is the highest
elevation anywhere in the world that the ADCO
flag has been raised.
Salem says that the success of the expedition
was due in large part to the co-operative spirit,
mutual encouragement and support among the
team members, as well as to the efforts of the
team leader, who, he says, really did a fantastic
job holding it all together and driving everyone on
with his enthusiasm.

A smiling face, faded forever

Maysa Samad, the former Chairlady


of the Ladies Club, passed away on
2nd November in Al Ain Hospital. She
was the Chairlady for 2011 and Club
Secretary from 2008-2010.

person, with her smiling face, her
strong character, the way in which she always tried to help anyone
and everyone. She sought in every way to contribute to the activities
of ADCOs ladies, while fulfilling the needs of her three childrten
while her husband, Faisal Saif, was working in the fields.
Throughout the last few years she was suffering within, but never
made a complaint, never sought any sympathy. We all miss her,
in a very special way, with her smiling face, now faded forever. Our
deepest condolences to her husband, her children and the rest of

Oral Health Programme organised at the Ruwais
ADNOC Housing Complex Recreation Centre
by the Ambulatory Health Services in February
this year. The objective of the programme was
to increase the awareness of school students as
well as their parents and other members of the
community about the importance of oral health/
dental care with special focus on students and
young children.
Our nurses, Maher Ahmad Abdelkarim Al Hawari
(MED) and Mrs. Maryam Ibrahim Aal Ali (MED),
prepared an oral health programme for the Ruwais
community while Terminal Support Manager
Ebrahim M. Beglar also took an active part in the
proceedings.
As part of the programme, ADCO supported an
art competition in local schools, in which students
were invited to display the importance of oral
health through drawings. This was complemented
by a campaign by mothers of children at the Al
Jinan kindergarten to promote awareness of the

importance of children being taken for regular oral


health check-ups and of learning the correct way
to brush and floss their teeth.
More generally, the campaign helped to promote a
better awareness of the need for comprehensive
oral health and for general health for men, women
and children, as well as spreading information
about the causes of tooth decay.

On 18th September, a special HSE reward distribution


ceremony was organised at the Asab camp of
contractors Al Ahlia, to mark the companys winning
of the second place ranking in the recent HSE
performance and accomplishment assessment.
The appraisal report showed Al Ahlia recording an
excellent score so far this year, out-performing others
in terms of compliance with contract HSE terms &
Conditions, Camp HSE standards and Annual HSE
Plan implementation and welfare aspects.
The award function was attended by Mr. Ahmed
Al Hammadi, SVP (SE), Sharif Salim Al Olama, VPO
(SE), Abdel Nasser Abu Aishah, Drilling Operations
Manager (SE), Abdulla Al Katheeri, A/VPD, Abdulrahman
Al Hawari, TSM, Saleh Al Ameri, SPM and the SE
Executive Management Team, along with Mr. Fouad
Najjar, General Manager of Ahlia.
The ceremony began with a speech from the SVP (SE),
in which he conveyed congratulations from Senior
Management to all members of Al Ahlia staff for their
outstanding HSE performance. He also thanked the
management of Al Ahlia for their commitment to uphold
HSE performance as a core value of their actitivites in
the Asab area, so as to achieve the ultimate goal of no
harm to people.
The Al Ahlia General Manager, also extended his
congratulations to the companys staff. The TL (HSE),
then translated into Hindi/Urdu important comments
about HSE and LPR rules, being loudly applauded.
Employees were then invited to receive a special spot
bonus, presented to them by the VPO-SE, VP-HSE and
the Executive Management Team, this being followed by
the taking of commemorative photographs and dinner.

Life Protection Rules (LPR) roll-outs

first half of 2012 from LPR
roll-outs in the Asab, Sahil
and Shah Fields.
The roll-outs, conducted over
several sessions, including
presentations in Arabic,
English and Hindi/Urdu, to
ensure the best possible
communication of the LPR
messages.
The sessions included
question and answer
competitions, together with
discussion of some of the
points raised, while personnel
putting forward particularly
good proposals for enhancing
awareness of the LPR were
given special awards.

SE Ramadan Prize
distribution
The SE Asset Welfare and Sports Committee seeks to
provide a better life outside work in our camp, bringing
employees together in socio-cultural activities and
sports. During the Ramadan tournaments in which both
large numbers of ADCO employees and contractorss
staff residing in the Asab Camp participated, the
atmosphere was electric.
The auditorium was packed to capacity with SE
employees in a festive mood, and with contractors
staff displaying contagious smiles, happy with their
sense of achievement.
The Committee organised a number of different
tournaments including Holy Quran and Hadith
memorisation competitions, an Islamic knowledge
competition and football, volleyball, table tennis,
basketball, squash, billiards and video games and
competition. Many residents took part, supported by
an even larger number of spectators.
A prize distribution ceremony was held on 25th
September, inaugurated by the Welfare Committee
Chairman. Prizes were presented by Sharif Salim Al
Olama, VPO (SE), this being followed by a sumptuous
dinner.
SE Asset Management thanked all participants and
requested them to continue their support for all the
events and tournaments.

As part of ADCOs 2012 sustainability initiatives,


the NEB Environmental team have installed
animal protection signboards in sensitive locations
in the NEB part of the concession area. The
purpose of the signboards is to protect important
species that inhabit NEB from driving activity in
the area.
These species include the Sand Gazelle, Arabian
(Mountain) Gazelle, Cape Hares, Cheesmans
Gerbil, and finally the Lesser Jerboa, also known
as the Kangaroo Rat.

The Cape Hare, for example, indicates the


quality of the desert vegetation, and declines
rapidly in numbers when the habitat or vegetation
are damaged by desert driving or contamination
of the land, such as by beached or improperly
disposed waste. The Gazelles are also both
protected critical species which are present
in limited numbers in some ADCO Fields and
elsewhere in the deserts of Abu Dhabi.

The animal crossing warnings were installed at


strategic points beside the main road, identified
as a result of sightings of these animals in the
area and the presence of vegetation upon which
they feed. Additionally, No Fishing signboards
have been installed where illegal fishing activity
has been noted. A total of 6 animal crossing and
4 No Fishing signboards have been installed.

J.P. James, Field Service Foreman (Bab


& Gas Asset - ASR) has been nominated
as Safety Man of the Month once annually
for the last 16 consecutive years, a
remarkable achievement He was also
selected as Environment Man of the
Month during 2002, 2003 and 2006 and
has been nominated as Safe Driver of
the Month once annually for the last six
consecutive years. Quite a record!
James has previously received numerous
expressions of appreciation from previous
Field Managers. On one memorable
occasion, in September 1997, he reported
a major gas leak in one of our trunk lines.

On the 27th June, a workshop was successfully


conducted on the Bu Hasa Mid-Year Performance
Review at the Etihad Tower, as part of the

year 2012 to date. The meeting was based on
the challenging Vision 2012 which was set in
January.
The meeting was attended by respective managers
or their representatives from divisions within the
Asset and by partners from other departments
of ADCO such as Drilling, Engineering, Finance,
Supply Chain and Human Resources, who provide
valuable contributions and performance towards
improving our Asset profile.

Mr. Mohamed Juma, the Senior Vice President


(BUH/HW/BQ), proudly noted the excellent
performance by the Asset in meeting and
exceeding its set objectives. He also congratulated
all employees for their work and said he looked
forward to maintaining this trend throughout the
year. The lessons learnt from last year were
reiterated to ensure that they are not repeated and
that current progress is maintained.

presentations on the 2012 Asset Achievements

Anniversary

of 1st Crude Oil Shipment

celebrated the 50th Anniversary
of the first shipment of crude oil
from Abu Dhabi, and the whole of
the UAE, with a grand ceremony
on 11th December 2012 at the
Emirates Palace. The event
marked the conclusion of ADMAOPCOs celebrations of the first
shipment of crude from the Umm
Shaif Field, which was exported
from Das Island on 4th July 1962,
a turning point in the countrys
history. It was attended by H.E.
Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi,
A DNOC D i r e c t o r G e n e r a l ,
dignitaries, diplomats, senior management from
ADNOC and its Group of companies, industry
executives, media representatives and company
employees and their families.
I n a keynote addre ss, A DM A -OPCO C h ie f
Executive Officer Ali Rashid Al-Jarwan paid tribute
to the countrys leadership and to all those who had

He expressed his appreciation for the vision and


guidance of the late Sheikh Zayed and of His
Highness President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed
Al Nahyan, and His Highness General Sheikh
Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince
of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander
of the UAE Armed Forces, who, he noted, have
continued to lead the journey to ensure that
people are able to benefit from the countrys oil
wealth.
Mr. Al-Jarwan thanked all those who have
devoted so much time and talent to the progress
of ADMA-OPCO from inception to today. He
congratulated all ADMA-OPCO employees
on this occasion, expressing the hope that the
company would see more and more success in
the years to come and that the booming oil and
gas industry will continue to flourish to meet future
global energy demand and ensure progress,
prosperity and stability of our communities and
humanity at large.
Before the official opening of the celebration,
the audience was entertained by Ayyalah
and Al Harbiyya Bands who presented their
esteemed national folk song and dance which
commemorates the heritage of the UAE people,
followed by the Military Band with a performance
providing a special patriotic and cultural moment.

The ceremony started with the National Anthem,


performed live by the Military Band. During the
ceremony, a film documenting ADMA-OPCOs 50year journey was screened, while musical displays
from the countries of ADMA-OPCOs foreign
shareholders also entertained the audience.
This was followed by a specially-commissioned
operetta, ADMA-OPCO Journey to Success,
which was staged on the outdoor terrace.
Commemorative shields were presented by the
ADNOC Director General to a number of people
who have helped to shape the ADMA-OPCO
of today, including the Minister of Energy, H.E.
Mohammed Dhaen Al Hamili, who started his
professional career with the Company in 1966,
former General Managers and long-serving
employees. Shareholders Representatives were
also honoured in recognition of their continued
support for ADMA-OPCO over the past 50 years.
The event concluded with a gala dinner, while
the audiences were entertained by a spectacular
fireworks display. A photo exhibition depicting the
stages of development of both Abu Dhabi and
ADMA-OPCO was also organised.
To mark the occasion, ADMA-OPCO issued a
commemorative Dirham in collaboration with the
UAE Central Bank. The dirham was released on
29 October 2012. The company also issued a set
of commemorative stamps, in collaboration with
Emirates Post.

The contributions made by ADMA-OPCO to


the national development have certainly placed
the company at the forefront of the oil and gas
industry in the region, under the umbrella of
the parent company ADNOC and its partners
