RATIONALE

In the Lord of the Flies, the story is about a group of children that were
stranded on an uninhabited island. At first, it is seen that the children were
able to maintain order. Not long after, conflict stirred between the boys as
they started forming two clans, helmed by Ralph and Jack. The conflict build
up led to a series of unfortunate events that involves death. The story ends
with the remaining children of the island being rescued by a trim cruiser.
I chose to focus on the beast as it plays a big role in shaping the
mentality of the children. The truth of the beast will be conveyed from
Simons perspective in a form of a diary. This is logical because, only Simon
discovered the real figure of the beast. A diary is one of the best ways for
Simon to express his opinion as he is finds it difficult to speak in a crowd.
Simon wrote this entry during the interval of discovering the truth about the
beast and his death.
This diary entry will highlight the Simons experience in unraveling the
mystery of the beast, the truth about the beast and as well as briefly
recalling his encounter with The Lord of The Flies. The style chosen for this
assignment is informal as a diary is more personal. The style of written
speech of Simon will sound more insightful than his peers due to his style of
thinking.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT
Dear Diary,
Finally. It all makes sense now. Everything seems to be laid out in front of
my eyes. Sometimes not all of the things we are scared about are real. It could
just be our imagination. Most of us are afraid of the beast. Especially the littluns.
Actually, I was scared of the beast, even though I dont believe it. I didnt know
what it was. But that was then. Now, I am no longer afraid. Because, I finally found
out the truth.
At first, one of the littluns complained that there was a beast somewhere in
the island that looked like a snake. And then other members of the started getting
scared and felt unsafe. Ralph tried to calm everyone down by saying that there was
no beast but Jack just said that they should just go hunt down the beast. I
personally do not believe that the beast is real. To make everyone feel safer, I
helped Ralph in building a shelter for the group.

When the twins first explained about their sight the beast, it seems like the
figure was furry, scary, had wings and was following them. If that is true, then
Samneric would have already been caught by it. But they werent. I find that hard
to believe. Somehow, when I think of the beast I see a picture of a human at once
heroic and sick. Turns out, what I discovered was different from what they said. I
was right all along. First of all, the beast was not even alive. In fact, it was not
even a beast at all. It was a dead man in a parachute. Everyone was too afraid to
get close to the beast to even know what it was. I dont know how I found the
courage to even get close to it. But, Im glad I did. I saw a humped thing staring
down at me from above. I hid my face, but I carried on, as I was curious! Thats
when I found out the truth. The beast that everyone is terrified of was just a
dead body. At that moment, I realized how foolish we were.
However, I am still ever so afraid about what has happened before I met
the dead parachutist. I am still traumatized by my experience encountering with
the pig head on a stick. At the moment it felt like the pig actually talked to me. I
was scared. Am I just imagining things, or what he said to me was real? He said
that he was the beast. Is he even real? I can still hear him say, arent you afraid
of me little boy? with that dark and deep voice. Why did he ask such questions?
Could it be that my mind is playing tricks on me? Those white teeth and dim eyes,

the blood spilled at his sides, and his face. I will never forget them. He stared at
me with those red bloody eyes and gave me a grin on his face. He said You knew
didnt you? That I am part of you? Close, close, close!!!!,
What. Does. It. Mean.
Wait. Nows not the right time to think about this. I should save up my thoughts on
the conversation some other time. Whats important right now is I have to inform
Ralph, Jack, Piggy and the others that the beast does not exist fast! Perhaps that
will lighten up the mood and make everyone less scared.
