TumbleBookLibrary Now Available Online:

Ebooks for E-kids!

..................................................................................................................................................................

he Library offers a new resource and confidence booster to help

young readers. The TumbleBookLibrary is a unique, interactive library
of animated, talking story books for preschoolers, beginning readers
and older independent readers. It is a way to teach kids the joy of
reading in a format they will love ebooks!
TumbleBooks are created by taking existing
story books and adding animation, sound, music and
narration to produce an electronic (ebook) story
book. Kids can read along and listen, or read on their own. It
includes licensed titles from childrens book publishers such as
Simon & Schuster, Chronicle Books, Candlewick Press, Charlesbridge
Press, Harcourt, Little Brown, Walker & Company, Lerner Books, and
HarperCollins Publishers, amongst others.
The collection is free and accessible 24 hours a day from your own
home computer. Go to the Librarys website at www.npl.lib.va.us, click on the
Children link from the home page, and then select TumbleBooks.

The collection can also be accessed from any of the Librarys public
computers in the branches.

The website is easily navigable for children, and parents will
find that reading is fluent. There are also options to hear
the stories in French and Spanish, and each story comes
with puzzles and games to strengthen reading
comprehension.
The Library of Virginia purchased the
TumbleBookLibrary for use by Virginias public
libraries. These electronic books are a literacy resource that keeps
children interested and involved in reading, said Librarian of Virginia Sandra
G. Treadway. They are great for children learning to read. The interactive
website keeps children interested in reading, contributes to success in
school, and helps to instill a love of reading.
For more information on the TumbleBookLibrary collection, please

The Kiwanis Club of Norfolk

Donates Books in Honor of Speakers
to the Norfolk Public Library

..................................................................................

fter years of honoring weekly speakers at the Kiwanis Club of Norfolks

meetings with a gift of a coffee mug, pen or umbrella, a new idea took form.
In keeping with the Clubs mission of helping the children of Norfolk have a
better future, the members decided to donate a childrens book to Norfolk
Public Library in honor of the speaker.
Since January 2012, 10 books have been donated to Norfolk Public Library by the
Kiwanis Club. The response from the speakers has been one of surprise and great
joy, said Steve Kee, Kiwanis Clubs President Elect. The books are chosen by NPLs
Youth Services Department and are distributed out to various NPL branches.
If you or an organization you belong to would like to donate new books to
Norfolk Public Library, please contact our Collection Development & Circulation
office at 664-7328 x352.

Library (FNPL) Book Review Contest

A Day in the Life of

Norfolk Public Libraries

.................................................................

Lori Crowe Sharp

Public Relations Coordinator

Here is what you get on a typical day across

the Norfolk Public Library (NPL) system:

Jonah Disters (pictured center) review was selected

from more than 2,100 entries and won Best Overall.

5,100 people visit NPL locations.

115 people get a Norfolk Public Library card.

25 events take place across the NPL system.

2,450 library items are checked out.

15 volunteers work 50 hours.

2,016 people use the computers.

As you can see, NPL is staying busy! During the month

of April 2012, NPL participated in a statewide program
called Snapshot VA. Snapshot VA is a project of the
Virginia Library Association and the Library of Virginia.
The purpose is to capture the impact that Virginia
libraries have on their communities on a typical day
and to turn the information into advocacy materials for
public libraries. In 2011, over 77 libraries participated in
Snapshot VA.
In April, NPL collected pictures of our libraries in
action and gathered comments from customers on why
they visited the library, what were their favorite library
services, and why the library is important to them.
We received over 125 comments both in person and
through our Facebook page. Here are just a few of the
comments received:
Love the library because of the positive energy I
receive from library staff. Such beautiful people!
- Alvin D.

I use the library to check e-mail. It is convenient

because I have no internet access at home.
The staff is very friendly and always willing to
help when needed.
- Elizabeth R.

Dister read his winning review

of Stephen Kings 11/22/63 to the audience.

This library is important to the community. It gives

children who are not privileged to having computer
at home to access the internet and other resources
what they need to interact with the technology of the
world.

We LOVE the library! We are a

military family and this is a great
place for my son and me to make
friends. We go to play dates and
Babygarten here. We always feel
so welcomed.
- Rachel E.

The library makes a difference in my

life simply because of availability of the
Bookmobile and access to books. The
mobile library especially saves on gas.
It also keeps me on a reading schedule.
Also the staff is quite helpful and
knowledgeable.
- Vicki D.

I enjoy the fact that I

can bring my children
to use the computers
for school projects.

Norfolks Battling Palms at their home field,

Norfolk Community Field near the old Booker
T. Washington High School, in 1952. The Palms
were one of the most popular and longestrunning African American teams in the South,
playing ball from the 1920s until 1955. One
promising young player for the 1953 season
was 22-year-old Willie Mays, who had been
drafted into the Army and played with the Palms
while serving his tour of duty at Fort Eustis,
returning to the New York Giants in 1954.

Congratulations to the NPL Volunteers of the Month

May
2012: Diamond Starks
...............................................
Diamond Starks has been a volunteer at the Lafayette Branch Library since February 2012. She is 12 years old and attends
Lafayette Winona Middle School. She volunteers everyday after school shelving books and helping with childrens programs. She even served as a hostess at a Fancy Nancy Tea Party at Lafayette Branch in honor of Womens History Month.
Diamond shows great initiative and is always looking for ways to help. She has been described as a super volunteer
by her coworkers.
She is truly a gem, states Library Associate Megan Mulvey.
In her free time, she likes to practice her violin, play on the computer, read and watch movies. Diamonds favorite
book is Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

June
2012: Khadijah Collins and Kayla Lawe
................................................................................
Khadijah Collins and Kayla Lawe began volunteering at the Van Wyck Branch Library in September 2011 through
a partnership between Norfolk Public Schools Special Education Services Department and the Norfolk Public Library.
The girls are dependable and dedicated volunteers, who have donated 140 hours of combined volunteer time
cleaning toys in the KidZone, filing DVDs and assisting with Babygarten programs.
Khadijah and Kayla are both students at Maury High School. Kaylas favorite subject is Culinary Arts and
Khadijahs favorite subject is Math.
Suzanne Ingersoll, a job coach for Maury High School, states; The library has been a fantastic place for the girls
to get their first work experience. Working at Van Wyck Branch has not only given the students solid job skills, but
also confidence in their abilities.
When Kayla is not in school she likes to babysit, play on her Xbox, help her mom cook, and watch movies from
the Library; her recent favorite: The Pink Panther.
In her off time, Khadijah likes to listen to her favorite music by Usher and
Ne-Yo, and hang out with her friends. She also likes to watch movies from the library.
.........................................................................................................

Thank YOU, Diamond, Khadijah and Kayla for all you do for NPL!
NPL appreciates your dedication to the Library Volunteer Program.
