Take Control

Virtual Studio Manager (VSM)

Broadcast Control System
Full control under one umbrella

Broadcasters face many challenges today; making the most out

of the available budget, technology and personnel resources
are hot topics. Only fully integrated systems can effectively
address the concepts of centralised resource sharing and
streamlined workflows.
Typically the flexibility and usability of router control sys
tems play a deciding role in choosing a router. Imagine instead
having an independent single hardware control system that
allows operation, configuration and system integration of your
chosen equipment and third-party devices. Often hardware
system solutions by a single manufacturer offer the best
integration. However, this can mean being forced into specific
technological and operational concepts that the manufacturer
has employed. Further down the line, it also reduces flexibility
and choice when rapidly changing technologies force core
system components to be added or replaced.
Wouldnt the ideal solution be to have the flexibility and
freedom to select any hardware technologies on the market
at any time, but integrate the control of all of these elements
into a single control system? This would then allow operational

workflows and user interfaces to be customised to meet

individual needs. If in addition the control system offered
an extensive design toolbox that allowed the customer to
easily change these interfaces without manufacturer support,
this would give peace of mind that the system would be able to
adapt and grow as needs and requirements changed over time.
With technology advancing so fast, protecting investments
in professional broadcast hardware over the long term becomes
a harder challenge day by day. Yet operational workflows and
control requirements typically change at a much slower rate.
Therefore, investing in a control system that is committed to
the continual implementation of third-party protocols as new
hardware appears on the market means exchanging hardware
at a later date can be done without changing interfaces or
workflows for operational or technical staff. In addition, training
costs and time can be saved due to a single control system
user interface that handles the control and setup of numerous
devices.
These are the concepts and visions of VSM.

VSM Architecture

With hundreds of different protocols already implemented and

growing by the day, VSM seamlessly integrates with the majority
of the most popular broadcast equipment on the market,
including video routers, video switchers, audio routers, audio
consoles, multi-viewers, intercoms, modular equipment and
many special third-party devices. By talking native protocols
where possible, equipment from different manufacturers can
be seamlessly glued together, giving unmatched recall and
logic control possibilities system wide. With a modern TCP/IP
backbone, VSM utilises standard IT hardware but also provides
interfaces to connect serially controlled devices, again freeing
you to decide on the best hardware technology, no matter the
format of the physical control interface.

VSMSetting the standard

for unified control in the mobile
broadcast environment

Flexibility, efficiency and fast reaction: the essential re

quirements for todays and tomorrows mobile environment.
Situations can change very quickly in the high pressure
mobile truck environment, even on a daily basis. A host of
new challenges are being presented to the technical teams
on location as 3D, HD and 5.1 surround sound become the
norm rather than the exception. Short setup times and fast
reaction to production staff demands on location are essential
for smooth and stress-free mobile productions. Any tools and
functions in the hands of mobile engineers that simplify and
speed up the setup of the production environment are hugely
beneficial. This is where VSM comes into play.
Global Snapshots
Recalling router crosspoints is nothing unique, but because
VSM has multiple devices under its control, storing a salvo
that contains more than just router crosspoints is simple
and powerful. This means with the push of a single button,
a complete truck setup can be recalled. This makes VSM
invaluable for recurring productions or system changes
during production!
Tally and Signalisation
There is no need for an additional external Tally system
with VSM, as it handles even complex Tally logic with
ease. Whether using simple static Tally or more common in
modern system designs, dynamic signal management through
multiple routers and tielines, VSM always ensures that the
correct Tally is filtered back to connected sources. In fact,
as Tally is such an integral part of the VSM system, a VSM
Tally function can also be used for internal and system wide
signalisation. Whether interfacing to multi-viewers, UMDs or
monitors directly, setup is simple and trouble free.
Centralised Labelling
With VSMs interconnectivity to all the major hardware devices
in the truck, from an engineering perspective signals only
need to be labeled once and it is distributed system wide: to
video switchers, multi-viewers, UMDs and operator button
panel displays. Even multiple labels per signal are possible.
Virtual Signals
In a rapidly changing environment, it is essential for the
Engineer in Charge to handle unexpected situations such as

hardware failures as fast and with as little fuss as possible.

By creating virtual containers for critical devices such as
CCUs and playback devices, these situations are quickly dealt
with one re-route rather than one hundred.
Signal Bundle Management
Devices often consist of numerous signal types, for instance,
a VTR normally consists of video, audio and Timecode signals.
To simplify the routing of these logical signals, which lie on
numerous router layers, it is often easier to operationally treat
them as a single device in the production environment rather
than individual signals. VSM can simply create Pseudo
Devices to bundle these signals together so that, during
operation, all signals of the device will be routed to the
respective destinations. Even though signals may be logically
bundled, VSM also offers the flexibility to individual operators
to decide on the fly whether to break the logical grouping on a
case-by-case basis to ensure the utmost flexibility!
Audio Follow Video Management
During fast moving sports events, it is common that audio
engineers will allow certain channels from their console to
open automatically based on the current source selection

on the video switcher. This frees them to concentrate on the

production elements of the mix. The traditional methods of
realising this is with GPIOs positioned directly between the
video switcher and audio console. VSM can simplify both
cabling and setup with GPIO activation over protocol. For more
complex events, a vsmPanel client offers a customised user
interface to simplify the setup and activation of this feature
on the fly.
Parameter Control
By talking directly to modular equipment, audio routers
and consoles, VSM can provide control and display of any
parameters available in the control protocol. This may include
settings for colour correctors, embedders/de-embedders
and all audio DSP parameters. These parameters, or gadgets,
simply appear in a tree structure in vsmStudio and can be
dragged directly onto panels for control and display via buttons
or encoders. For the vsmPanel software client, gadgets can
also be displayed in more useful forms such as faders.
These are just a few reasons why VSM is fast becoming the
number one control system choice worldwide for the mobile
and OB truck environment!

Multiple production studios,

maximum resource flexibility,
VSM has it under control

Modern TV production facilities are looking to maximise

the flexibility of available resources to get the most out
of hardware and real estate investments. Centralising
routers, intercom systems, modular gear and other hardware
devices to be accessible in all studios brings both operational
flexibility and studio redundancy features. Administering the
availability of these resources to the various studios needs
careful management and logic. Shifting a production from one
control room to another in an emergency is only possible if
all aspects of the original production (signals, labels, panels,
multiviewers, Tally, etc) can be quickly established and set up.
The advantage of a system that has control over all major
equipment is clear to understand.VSM offers unique functionality
to handle both the resource management and studio switching
requirements in fast and simple operational steps.
Tieline Management
As system demands in a facility increase, multiple routers are
often required to handle the total number of I/O resources
needed. Tielines provide the physical connection to distribute
signals between the routers, but the total number is always
a limiting factor. Keeping these tielines dynamic maximises
the flexibility of the system by only utilising a tieline when
needed. VSM automatically handles this tieline management
in a dynamic and transparent way.
Operationally, the user only need select the required
source and target and VSM will automatically assign free
tielines as needed. If there are no free tielines available,
feedback is automatically provided. VSM tieline management
not only includes the automatic routing features, but also the
transparent handling of Tally logic for error free operation.
Treating Production Studios as Boxes
As resources become centralised, system capabilities drama-

tically increase in size, thus becoming difficult to manage.

Virtualising temporary setups of resources, which can then
be recalled to any studio environment in a preset, simplifies
resource management even for the largest of systems. Boxing
the resources into virtual environments means moving
complete productions from one studio to another is as simple
as one button push workflow optimisation at its best!
Automatic Administration of Centralised Resources
If centralised resources such as cameras or Video Switcher
M/E s are available to multiple studios, it is essential that,
whilst in use, they are blocked from access by other studios
unless confirmation is given.
VSM can easily generate a logic that shows which resources
or signals are currently in use by another studio and block
access or routing until they are again available. In rental
production facilities, this feature is invaluable to ensuring that
only purchased resources are available, as well as protecting
customer-owned signals from being accessed elsewhere.

Master Control Room (MCR)

Your mission-critical control
is in safe hands

Any system to be utilised in the mission-critical MCR application

for radio or TV must offer sophisticated redundancy features
to ensure 24/7 operation without critical failures under any
circumstances.
In addition, control requirements are based around preprogrammed transmission switching, switching control from
third-party automation systems, signal monitoring and alarms
with automatic routing based on a specific alarm status or
logic detection. Quick operational reaction to failed devices
is essential to ensure transmission lines never go dead.
Signal path overviews and automatic handling of different
signal types and formats are also essential requirements for a
unified control system designed for this use. Already installed
in numerous MCRs across the world, VSM is your trusted
partner to handle even the largest and most sophisticated
system requirements.
Scheduler
VSM has a built-in scheduler with an easy to use operational
GUI that can be integrated directly in the vsmPanel software
client. Any number of events can be pre-programmed (with
re-occurrence rules) for an unlimited number of transmission
channels.

(such as a frame synchroniser) and setting it so that the signal

arrives at the target in the correct format. As MCR operations
are mission-critical, if one of the currently used pooled devices
should fail, VSM will automatically re-route the signal to
another spare device without user intervention. The failed
device is then tagged as failed and any subsequent insertions
will no longer utilise this device until the administrator clears
the tag. This unique functionality simplifies operation and
ensures continuous error-free transmission.
Alarms and Emergency Switching
Many devices can provide status flags over protocol to monitor
signal or hardware statuses. In the case of an audio router,
signal presence can be established in the form of silence
detects. Such flags can alert the operator to potential
transmission issues. In routers where this information is
provided over protocol, no additional cabling or physical GPIOs
are required to utilise these flags. VSM offers a sophisticated
alarm logic that takes these flags and displays them in userconfigurable GUIs, either on hardware panels or, more

An event can include numerous actions, such as crosspoint

routing, parameter control or any control function available
through the connected hardware devices. Once programmed,
these actions will be executed at the predetermined time
simultaneously transmission planning made simple with VSM.
Third-party Automation Control
In many instances, a separate third-party scheduling and
automation system is utilised for transmission planning and
playout. In this instance, VSM can be controlled directly from
these systems in a slave mode, thus offering the benefits
of a user-friendly, universal control system, but fulfilling the
needs of a mission-critical router controller.
Pooling
In the stressful environment of the MCR, simplified operation
is essential for error-free transmission. When dealing
with video signals of varying formats and frame rates,
routing signals may not be as simple as routing from A to B.
Frame synchronisation or format conversion may need to be
inserted between source and destination from a pool of
available devices. VSM simplifies and automates operation by
automatically inserting a free pooled device dynamically

commonly, on a vsmPanel client. Here different alarm levels

and priorities can be set, so that the severity of a fault can be
suitably displayed on a panel and acknowledged by the user if
needed. VSM logs all alarms and provides an overview of
the signal path in question to process and react to the alarm
accordingly. In addition, automatic switching to backup sources
can be programmed based on parameters such as the duration
and priority of a particular alarm (Apology Rules). Quite simply,
VSMs sophisticated alarm management functionality forms a
strong framework for a streamlined MCR workflow.

and
configurability in your hands

vsmStudio software is the heart of the VSM system and

the main administration and configuration tool that runs
continuously on all VSM servers in the system. From here, an
easy to use GUI provides all the functions, tools and setup
wizards to control and customise your VSM system to your
specific application and workflow needs. Additionally, all
connected hardware settings and statuses are shown in realtime, with instant control and feedback.
The basic vsmStudio software licence provides all the
tools needed to administrate communication ports, define
and control router layers, enter signal paths and labels,
configure all hardware and software panel user interfaces
and many other features. A number of modular add-on
software functions can then be added for more sophisticated
functionalities such as scheduling, boxing, pooling etc.

VSMSTUDIO

The vsmStudio software concept is that after initial assistance

and factory support with custom configuration to mould the
product into the project specific requirements, the customer
is trained and left with a tool to continually adapt, add and
change all parts of the system without further factory support.
As your needs change, the full power and configurability
of VSM is in your hands. Not only this, technical staff need
only learn one system interface to control numerous devices,
saving time and money in training.

VSM RedundancyReliable operation:

this is our daily business

With hundreds of VSM systems installed across the world in

daily live production and MCR environments, VSM was built
from the ground up with redundancy and rock solid reliability
at its heart. vsmStudio software can be installed on up to
16 servers and uniquely run without a master/slave server
cluster logic.
With VSMs proprietary sophisticated software logic, the
system automatically load-balances all connected devices
amongst the servers to automatically optimise system
performance. Should a server from the cluster fail, the
connected hardware devices automatically and seamlessly
connect to an alternative server in the cluster without the

loss of operation or performance. The servers synchronise

configuration data in the background and all servers can read
and correctly display the status of connected third-party routers
and devices. Control can, in fact, be handled from any of the
servers in the cluster. With a cluster of four servers, three
servers could fail and the system would still seamlessly
operate with the single remaining server! Typically two servers
is the minimum for redundancy, but three servers in the MCR
application would allow for one to be removed for servicing
whilst maintaining redundancy in the system. Attaching the
server once again is seamless and causes no interference to
the running system peace of mind, safe and secure!

Control Interface possibilities

Its not easy being easy, but we have the design tools to make your
operational workflows and user interfaces just that.

For all the engineering benefits and flexibility that VSM brings
to the broadcast environment, the accessibility and ease of
control for operational personnel is paramount to the system
design. A combination of hardware button panels and software
or web-based control clients form the basis of this interaction.
All panel configuration and design is handled directly in
the vsmStudio software with no need for panel reboots or
configuration downloads changes are instantaneous!
vsmPanel
vsmPanel is a software that runs on a network PC workstation
client (Windows based) and, from a design and setup
perspective, acts identical to a hardware panel. In fact, the
administrator can control and view any hardware panel in
the system directly from this client, if needed. Any number of
client licences are possible, each offering a different control
interface if necessary. Normally operated in conjunction with a
touchscreen for the most intuitive operation, vsmPanel allows
free design and layout of an operational interface.
Pictures and images can be incorporated into a panel design
to help the user quickly and simply understand the navigation
concept and control possibilities laid out in front of them.
Take the routing of a monitor wall, for example: incorporate
a graphical or pictorial representation of the exact monitor
wall into the panel design and the operator will intuitively
understand how to interact and route the required signals to
the monitors with little training. The operator is happy and

the engineer, too! Adding company logos and corporate design

features to the panel design add to the user experience and
interaction.
In addition, advanced control functions such as graphical
faders, meters (meter data over protocol), alarm management,
scheduling control, web browsers and media players can all
be freely incorporated into a panel design. There are no limits
to the number of control pages within a panel and with a
large toolbox of button navigation possibilities, even the most
complex workflows can be easily accommodated and, in most
cases, simplified.
LTP-19 (touchscreen control panel)
Acting as a small, all in one vsmPanel client, the LTP-19 is a
2.5U high rackmount touchscreen panel that offers the full
flexibility of vsmPanel. There is no need for any additional
external PC workstation to drive the panel, making it ideal
for more advanced control possibilities where space is at a
premium. For example, the LTP-19 could make the perfect
audio control room panel where metering and fader controls
can be included as well as standard routing functionality.

Hardware Control Panels

The LBP series of hardware control panels* have fully

configurable multi-colour graphical LCD buttons which
provide unmatched status display and control possibilities.
Each button has the ability to perform multiple functions
from a single push, thus hugely increasing the operational
flexibility of the panels. Every action initiated from a button
is executed in real-time and for operational safety and clarity,
the button displays will only show the true and current status
of crosspoint or parameter settings. There are no limits to
the number of control pages within a panel and with a large

toolbox of button navigation possibilities, even the most

complex of workflows can easily be accommodated and in
most cases simplified. Some panels include rotary encoders
to make parameter control more intuitive and precise.
All panel network setup and automatic firmware updates
are handled directly over the VSM network. All panels have
two built-in GPIOs which are free for any use and programmed
as part of the normal GPIO configuration in vsmStudio.

LTC Unit
For time-dependent applications, a LTC unit is available to
synchronise the VSM servers accurately to a facility time
source. An analogue LTC input and a video sync input are
available. The unit then connects to the VSM server via a USB
connection. A single or dual unit is available for redundant
server configurations.

CommServer
For third-party devices that only have serial connectivity and
cannot interface to the VSM system directly via TCP/IP, a VSM
CommServer is required. There are a number of versions
available; Single CommServer, Dual CommServer (2 serial
ports) and a MultiSerial Interface with up to ten serial ports.

UMD and UMD Proxy

Utilising VSM UMDs offers a number of unique benefits. More
than eight independent three-colour Tally and text sections
can be displayed on a single 1U unit. With a freely configurable
pixel matrix, special configurations and layouts can easily be
created including support for foreign language character sets.
Connection to the VSM network via a UMD proxy unit allows
for a redundancy via a serial bus loop, with a total of 60 VSM
UMDs supported in one loop.

GPIO Interfaces
For connection of physical GPIOs to the VSM system, GPIO
boxes are required that connect directly to the VSM network
over TCP/IP. There are 3 different versions available; GPIO 32
(32 opto-coupled inputs and 32 relay closure outputs), GPI 64
(64 opto-coupled inputs) and GPO 64 (64 relay closure outputs).
The GPIOs are freely configurable in the vsmStudio software.
