The Vision:
The idea of Dar Al-Tarjama (DAT) aims at the establishment of a worldwide, comprehensive
translation movement / practice, starting with the Arab countries then spreading to the rest of the
world. First of all it has to be understood that translation is a service business, not an industry or
commerce. This service is provided to the society with its various enterprises and institutions with
the aim of offering the suitable media that can make various cultures interact and eventually react
in a positive manner. From there, DAT was started with the aim of providing this tool, this service
and this media to any serious effort aiming for the revival of the Arabs and the enlightenment of
mankind through spreading reliable knowledge.
In 2003 a virtual team of volunteer translators and proofreaders, from over 20 countries, gathered
with this purpose in mind, and aiming chiefly to connect cultures and get them acquainted rather
than clashing. While we were first setting our targets, we had to ask ourselves two questions:
1. What has the Arab nation got, that deserves to be conveyed to the other
cultures?
2. What have the other cultures got, that deserves to be conveyed to the Arab
nation?
1. Islam, our history, our culture and experiences as a nation / region are all
unique subjects that we got and that deserve to be conveyed to the western cultures.
From all of these, Islam is by far, the most misrepresented by our culture and the
most misunderstood by the others cultures.
2. We need almost everything from the other cultures. Almost because we
only need achievements in selected areas that are useful and needed for our nation.
The above replies helped us in fine-tuning our mission and in setting our goals to be a mission-
oriented translation house, rather than being one among a thousand other translation houses.
By October 2005, DAT was formed into a joint stock Egyptian company with a paid-up capital of
250,000 LE. All funding for DAT’s capital was done exclusively by its members (the DATians).
DAT owes much, for its wide exposure and evolution, to Amr Khaled’s initiative “Life Makers”.
We will use translation to break the language barriers between the various cultures with the
purpose of exchanging beneficial and useful sciences and knowledge.
The Mission:
Translate.. Connect.. Acquaint..
A. Translating from Arabic into foreign languages to convey Islam sciences to all
humanity, in every possible language, targeting two groups:
- Non-Muslims worldwide: introducing the true global message of Islam, and
correcting misconceptions about Islam and Muslims, in the past and in the present.
- Muslims: providing them with a comprehensive understanding and awareness about
Islam, their history, their nation and the role they are entrusted with.
The Objectives:
1. Spreading the scope and the objectives of the team in as many countries of the world as
possible with the aim of increasing our members / participants.
2. Acquiring the necessary recognition from the international as well as the local associations
and universities.
3. Participating in international contests held in the field of translation.
4. Participating in seminars and conventions with the aim of spreading the ideas of the team
and putting them into action.
5. Including more native speaking members (non-Arabic speakers) in all the team convoys to
make a final evaluation for our translated texts with the aim of:
- Testing the impact of the translated texts on them.
- Ensuring that there are no cultural misconceptions for those who know nothing
about the Arabic culture or language.
